An Endangered Sibling.

 Courtroom C-

We were once again in one of those trials that seemingly had no ending... We were  defending, Former Drug Kingpin, now Entreprenuer, Leonard Bishop accused of Murder...We were awaiting a jury verdict in this the fourth trial... This was the second time facing Bruce Greene and having to go through several trials because he refused to drop charges...

Mr. Bishop had served seven years in Federal Prison..He had come home 2 years ago and had given up the drug trade...He had instead opened up a business....A print shop that xeroxed things and shipped packages... It had been so successful that he now had 9 shops across the city.

He was charged with killing one of his former associates in the drug business...He said that he did not and that he had cut all ties with his former life..

Olivia believed him and thus we were defending him on murder charges.

 

Me , being a former cop was understandably skeptical...but after a thorough investigation... I believed him...

I had even planted Private Investigator Milt Lewis into his main office.. He turned up nothing to indicate that Mr. Bishop was still involved in the underworld.

"Bruce Greene is such a tool, He knows he doesn't have a case...He should've dropped charges after the second trial."said Beverly, leaning on her husband's shoulders..

"Or at least after the third trial...This is crazy." said Nelson..

"Nelson, you usually can read the jury what do you think?" asked Josie.

"What can I say?  I thought we had the last three juries... I can't really say...I felt as though we gave an aggressive defense."said Nelson.

"I felt so too!" said Bresha.

"You guys have more than did as good a job as any attorneys I've ever had...Whatever the verdict...I'm grateful to you." said Leonard Bishop.

We were up against ADA Bruce Greene and ADA Melvin Ortiz..  A formidable duo!

They weren't getting along.. Bruce had wanted to work with Samantha Addison, but she was busy with a trial of her own...So he was stuck working with Melvin...

The two men butted heads immediately...Melvin didn't allow Bruce to take over the trial , even though he was the lead prosecutor.. Melvin was opinionated and unlike working with Samantha, Bruce didn't ask for his opinion on anything..When he gave his opinion, Bruce casually ignored it.

They continuously butted heads... This kind of worked in our favor.

Lt. Tragg who had made the arrest, Was only present during the first trial...He did not attend any of the subsequent trials.. The relationship between him and Bruce Greene was decidedly frosty.

In the first trial, The Jury came back deadlocked 7-5 in our favor.... In the second trial, the Jury came back 6-6 .... In the third trial...the jury came back again, 7-5 in our favor....

Now we were awaiting the verdict in this fourth trial... We were very exhausted.. All of us after three long trials..

To make matters worse, The Judge in all four trials was Bruce's ex-sister in law, Judge Telma Bailey.

She didn't hide the fact that she despised Bruce Greene, still she tried her best to be fair...Tough and fair to both sides...

"Has the Jury come to a decision?" she said...She was tired too!

"Yes we have your honor." said the foreman... This was much better than hearing "Your honor , we are hopelessly deadlocked."

The Foreman placed the verdict in the bailiff's hand...

The bailiff placed the verdict in the Judges Hand.

The Judge read the verdict and practically giggled.. That made us feel relieved.

"Read it." she said.

Bruce was incensed... ''What is she giggling about?" he snarled.

"WE THE JURORS REPRESENTING THE COMMONWEALTH IN THE MATTER OF COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA VS. Leonard Bishop , we find the defendent,

NOT GUILTY ON THE CHARGE OF MURDER IN THE FIRST DEGREE!!!"

Leonard Bishop burst into tears....

"THANK YOU, THANK YOU ALL!" he said... 

"You're welcome Mr. Bishop...Proof positive that everybody deserves a second chance."said Olivia.

 

"You're quite welcome my man." I said .

"We'll even send some business your way."said Beverly, with a smile.

"Yeah." said Nelson.

"We are happy for you."said Josie.

"Go have a couple of cold ones...You deserve it." said Bee Bee,

"Ha Ha Ha...I think I will."laughed Leonard Bishop..

"POLL THE DAMN JURY!! POLL THE JURY!!!" screamed ADA Bruce Greene.

They polled the jury twice and both times, All 12 people said Not Guilty...

"STUPID JURY, STUPID JURY....WHAT TRIAL WERE THEY LISTENING TO?" he exclaimed...

He kicked the table relentlessly....He tossed his suit jacket into the air..He spun around like a top and then fell to the floor,kicking his legs up into the air like a small child having a temper tantrum....

ADA Samantha Addison was in the courtroom that day....She was astounded..

"Oh My God!! And I slept with him....I can't believe it.. I slept with him.I considered being his girlfriend....No way...Oh my god!! What was I thinking?   I slept with him. "she thought to herself.

"Man I'm glad this trial is over... I never want to work with him again.."said her partner, Melvin Ortiz..

"Mandy you owe me one for taking the slack for you....He wanted to work with you.."said an angry Melvin Ortiz..

"Okay...I owe you one..."said Samantha, watching Bruce on the floor, kicking his legs in the air..

"He's a Fool!" she thought.

"Mandy, Melvin, you guys are still having dinner with us tomorrow night right?" asked Olivia.

"Yes.... I wouldn't miss it." said Samantha.

"You can bring a plus one." said Beverly...

They were both ignoring Bruce's shenanigans...

"I don't have a plus one to bring....but I'll bring myself and an appetite."said Samantha, smiling.

"That's good enough." said Olivia.

"You and your wife are coming right Melvin?" asked Nelson.

''Wouldn't miss it." said Melvin as we all left the courtroom...

 

Judge Bailey was still laughing as she exited the courtroom...

Bruce Greene got up off the floor slowly, dusted off his jacket and left the courtroom... Everybody including Samantha was gone.. He hadn't really talked to her except in passing since their night together...He was anxious for a second date and another round in the bed... She however was not.

II-

THE NEXT NIGHT-

We all met for dinner at our Office /Duplex...

"Olivia!!! Beverly!! Your place is beautiful....An Office Downstairs, with a law library next to it and that Media room and then these two floors that you live on...Beautiful....This must have cost you a mint."said Samantha.

"No , I divorced well and I brought practically all of my clients with me...Beverly brought hers and we had retainer fees and working capital...The Three of us...Me, Beverly and Josie worked real hard and soon, Beverly's husband, Nelson joined us and my former student, Bresha and of course my husband, Donnie Ray and Beverly's mother, who is like a big sister to me Alfreda joined us and we have what you see today." said Olivia.

"Outstanding." said Samantha.

"Ms. Olivia, everything is delicious....Thank you." said Melvin...

"Yes....Thank you for inviting us." said his wife, Justine. 

"You're all quite welcome."said Olivia.

 

"We are happy to have everybody here." said Donnie Ray.

"And we have quite a crowd tonight." said Beverly..

"Hey Melvin, you playin Intramural Basketball next spring?" asked Nelson.

"Oh yeah, most definitely." said Melvin as he ate his food...

"Those were nice Saturdays...All of us down there with snacks.." said Josie.

"Yeah, it was so cool." said Paris.

"Well next Spring...We'll return to the courts..." said Bresha.

"Yeah..."said Tony....

"It was a lot of fun.."said Alfreda..

"It truly was.." said Rockland, who had a mean jump shot....

 

"Nice to see you here Vettie....You all live across the street huh?" said Samantha.

 "Yup!  Us and evrybody you saw eating with us.last week... We're a close knit group...but Olivia's and my group is particularly close."said Yvette.

"Yup, they always have been."said Yvette's husband, Gary.

"It's good to have close friends in this law business."said Samantha.

"Wow! this is nice..we haven't been here in a long time."said Keith Jones.

"I know...It was nice of Olivia and Beverly to invite all of us tonight." said Bee Bee.

"Always a good time when we come here."said Sofia.

"Indeed."said Kahlil.

"Everything is delicious Olivia, Beverly."said Jade.

"Yes, thank you for inviting us."said Danny.

"You're all welcome." said Olivia.

"You're all quite welcome." said Beverly.

"Everything is just delicious."said Virginia.

"It's good to see you again Virginia."said Samantha.

"Girrrrrrrl, it's good to be able to be seen." said Virginia,laughing.

Her husband, Jetty, who was responsible for making her parole possible and getting her a job with Yvette and company, smiled.

Samantha's phone rang.... It was Bruce. She answered..

"Hello."

"Hi...Where are you? Where have you been? I haven't seen you for a few days." said Bruce.

"I've been busy and I've been out.... I'm having dinner with friends right now.. I'll talk to you later."said Samantha, who not only hung up, but turned her phone off and disabled the GPS on her phone.

Bruce wasn't finished yet....He still wanted to talk to her. He wanted to come over tonight.

Samantha had packed an overnight bag and had asked Olivia if she could spend the night there with her.. Olivia agreed...

Samantha didn't feel like being bothered with Bruce Greene tonight.

She spent the night in our sub-basement apartment....

III-

"Dinner was great.....and now for dessert!" I said, smiling....

I took Olivia in my arms...

"Ouuuuuuuuuu Am I your dessert?" she asked.

"You know it." I said.

"Ummmmm I like that!" she said,laughing...

She kissed me slowly and softly...

"I like this too." I said.

"Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!" she moaned.

and then we began kissing more passionately...

"Ummmmmmmmm you sound like you're ready to do some cooking of your own..." she cooed.

"Always." I said.

Daybreak approached.

"His name is Sylvester Gibbons, He runs this travel agency....or rather he ran it...He was hit with two .38 slugs in the chest...."said a CSI Man.

"Death was instantaneous..."said Dr. Hazel Baylor...

"This looks like it could be the murder weapon, pointing to a hot ,smoking gun on the floor near the body."said Dr. Marcy Martin.

"That's not my gun!! I swear...When I came here...He was dead, he was on the floor and that gun was right where it is...I didn't touch it!   He was dead when I got here." said Jeffrey James...

"He called me..We were supposed to have a meeting." he said.

"A Meeting at Eight in the Morning? One Hour before this joint opens?" asked a skeptical Lt. Tragg.

"Yes...He owed me money..."said Jeffrey James.

"And you came here to collect...I'm not buying your story."said Lt. Tragg...."Boys hook him up!! Jeffrey

James...You have the right to remain silent...Anything you say can be used against you in a court of law, You have a right to an attorney...If you can't afford an attorney, one will be provided to you...Do you understand these rights as I have read them to you Jeffrey?" snarled Lt. Tragg.

"My sister is an Assistant District Attorney....Of course I understand...and you'll understand too you Keystone copper." said Jeffrey James.

"Yeah, Yeah Yeah, take him away boys....And girls, get me that autopsy report as soon as possible." snapped Lt. Tragg.. "Bag him and tag him." he said.

The body of Travel Agent  Sylvester Gibbons, was put in a body bag and strapped to a gurney and rolled out of the storefront...

In Another part of town at our office /duplex

We were enjoying breakfast...

"Oh My Godd! Olivia, do you always feed your team like this?" asked Samantha.

''Everyday....A full belly to start the day, Keeps your employees Happy all day."laughed Olivia.

"You made that up didn't you?"laughed Samantha.

"Yeah."snickered Olivia.

 

"We are pretty close...I mean Olivia and I and Beverly and Nelson live here in this building, Josie lives across the street as does Alfreda.  Bresha lives down the street...Sooo we have breakfast ,lunch and dinner right here when we can." I said.

"It keeps us together."said Beverly..

"I imagine it does..."laughed Samantha.

"Sooo, we just finished a big case, What about you?" asked Nelson.

" I just wrapped up two...One I lost and one I won....I like you, don't have anything on my docket...I can relax now..."said Samantha , smiling...

" It's a good feeling...."said Josie.

"If Your colleague Bruce Greene wasn't such a tool, We could've been finished...4 trials...Oh My God!"said Bresha.

"I feel you." said Samantha, grimacing at the fact that most of the attorneys she knew despised Bruce Greene and the fact that she had slept with him and she didn't want people to know that.

Alfreda stared at her and smiled wryly...

Samantha's phone rang....She shuddered, thinking it was Bruce....but it wasn't...It was a City number..

 

"Hello!" she said.

"Big Sis...It's me, Jeff...I'm in trouble...I need your help....I've been arrested...Charged with Murder."said Jeffrey James.

"OH MY GOD!" said Samantha.

"Samantha? What is it?" asked Olivia.
