An Internal Affair, Part 2

10:00 AM- We were back in the building where our legal careers began....On The 17th Floor.
 

In a beautiful new conference room that hadn't been built when we last worked here.....

We had coffees and delicious pastries...It seemed a very genteel way to begin a civil war! And yet a civil war this was turning out to be....

''Well let's get to it.." said Yvette.

"This is all bullshit..."scoffed our client...William Flowers...

''Shhhh, let's hear her out now...You'll get your turn." said Bee Bee.

Yvette smiled.. Bee Bee was becoming more and more of a leader everyday....She liked that about her..

She was getting ready to say the exact same thing to William.

"Mrs. Petrovic You say that Mr. Flowers was inappropriate with you on several occasions.. Did you make notes or keep a record of these occassions?" asked Sofia.

"Yes, because it sounds like here say from where we are sitting." I said.

"He didn't have his hands in your pants, tugging on your boxers or do you wear briefs?" asked Mrs. Petrovic.

We all laughed...

"We mean no disrespect....We are just trying to find out is there a factual basis for all of this other than what you claim and what he disputes." said Kahlil.

Jade smiled wryly....

Partner Pratt just shook his head....

Alana Petrovic spoke first

"For the past three years I have been an associate attorney working under the supervision of Senior Associate Attorney William Flowers....At first we had a great working relationship...We complimented each other well... I went to Lunches and to Dinners with him and thought nothing of it... At the Christmas Party last year...He came up behind me and hugged me a little too tight and a little too long..

I felt his hardening erection and I saw that it was quite prominent... I chalked that up to the fact that he had been drinking...We all had....

I didn't like how this was going.....So I have approached another attorney....Patricia Reynolds to represent me."said Alana Petrovic.

''And this is where we are." said Patty Reynolds.

Yvette sighed..  "All of this is worth Six million dollars and a partnership? This sounds a bit like extortion to me." said Yvette...

"Pain and suffering." said Patty...

"Oh Come on Patty!" said Ms. Yvette.

"No you come on Vettie...You know we women have always been subject to unwanted advances by men...Especially powerful men who held our futures somewhat in their hands." said Patty...

Something Yvette herself knew was true...

And so the debate went on.

II-

As we sat in the conference room Yvette thought back to her own battle with sexual harrassment from a male superior at this very law firm...a few years back.

Yvette thought back years ago when she might have been in the same situation this woman was in.

"I don't mix business with pleasure......You should know that..."said Yvette, remembering a night many years ago when she and her then supervisor, Miles Ellis were working on a big case...

back when he worked at McClusky...It was a career building case that would have put them both in the running for a partnership or that's what they thought as young naive Attorneys...

"You know Yvette...I don't live too far from here...We've been studying and working on this case all night...I did have something more in mind for tonight..."he said softly..

 ''Do you want to win this case or not?  We are up against a sharp Attorney....One with more experience...We have to cross every t and dot every i.."said Yvette..

"Yeah, but we are just about ready....and we've got a whole nother day to finish up...I've got something else on my mind...I've had it on my mind for a long time..." said Miles..

"Miles You've had your hands on my legs for the past half hour and you've been running them up my skirt...now you're tugging on the waist band of my panties...Let me guess what that might be? Now look, we work together...I don't do this...I don't sleep with people I work with...it makes things a little weird, plus ..Plus You're my supervisor.That's a big no no..."said Yvette.

"I've always treated you like an equal partner haven't I? I don't run that old Supervisor jive on you? Besides...everybody already thinks we are doing it anyway.."said Miles.

"All the more reason why we shouldn't...Take your hands from under my dress...."said Yvette..

''Come on Yvette...It's late, almost midnight..You don't want to make that long drive home...Come over to my spot..and I'll bring you to your car in the morning baby..."he said..

"I don't have a change of clothes...I'd get to work late...No...I don't think this would be a good idea...Now if you want to take five for tonight we can...But I'm not going home with you.."said Yvette..

Miles pulled her to him, His hand was still up her skirt...He tugged on the waistband of her panties, she finally moved his hands from under her skirt.........He attempted to kiss her, but Yvette moved her head...He tried to move it back, but she moved away....

"Miles, stop it okay? Calm down.."said Yvette..

"Damnnn Yvette you are so sexy...Come on....Get with the program baby."he said..

"No Miles...No...WHAT PROGRAM???"said Yvette..

 It was near midnight...They were the only two people in their section of the law library...

He attempted to kiss her once again, but Yvette moved her head...Miles tried to move it back, but she moved away....
"Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm, come here baby....ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh you've got me hotter than a cigarette at a gas station.." he moaned..
He grabbed her behind and pulled her into him, He kissed her neck and the side of her face....She eased out of his embrace once again..

"STOP IT OKAY! WHAT HAS GOTTEN IN TO YOU?" said Yvette....with a tinge of anger in her voice.,.

Miles knocked over a chair...Some of their briefs fell to the floor...He was now grinding Yvette up against the wall and breathing heavily...

"You've gotten in to me....I'd like to get INTO YOU!!! I can't stop....Do you really want me to stop Yvette?" he moaned...

Yvette slapped him hard and kneed him in the groin.....

Miles moaned and fell to the floor..

"UMMMMMMMMMMMMM...OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" he moaned

The curator came around the bend...just as Miles was getting to his feet..

"Is everything alright? You okay sir?" he asked..

Miles was getting his wind back...

"Yeah,I'm okay..I uh slipped, Lost my balance...I'm sleepy...I-I uh better get home.." he said..

The Curator left...

Yvette helped him get up....She picked up the briefs off the floor and put them in order..

"Miles..I'm sooo sorry, but you got a little carried away....You got crazy....I'm really sorry..I am..."said Yvette...Who realized she'd just slapped and kneed her boss in the groin.

Miles smiled..

"It's okay...but after that...I deserve a little kiss.."he said..

"You are incorrigable..."said Yvette...

Miles leaned in and kissed her softly before she could move her head..

Yvette had to admit...He did know how to kiss a woman and she did enjoy it...His lips were soft and he smelled good..

She returned his passion for a moment...a brief moment...  But she couldn't do this...She couldn't!!!...She pushed him away....

"Stop it!.....I mean it...This is not going to happen....I'm serious Miles... This is not going to happen....We work together...You're my supervisor...I can't do this..You got your kiss,Now let's cool it..."she said.

"Okay....Goodnight Yvette."said Miles..He was disappointed and still very horny....He stood up and slowly collected his things  and walked out by himself... He didn't help her collect her things...He didn't walk her to her car...He just left.....

Yvette drove home by herself...She knew Miles had a thing for her...She had caught him looking at her leeringly ,a little too long on several occassions.......but this was the first time he had acted on it...Needless to say, things were going to be weird between them for awhile...She thought....

They were supposed to meet with the opposing Attorneys in two days at the office...but the Attorneys never showed up.. Miles didn't come in the office....He didn't call, nor did he return her calls or texts the past two days..

Yvette waited....and called Miles's cell phone several times...but she got no answer..

Unknown to her, Miles called the opposing Attorneys and the Clients and they met at another location where he successfully argued the case by himself and won.....

He was heralded around the office as the Golden Boy, given a bigger office...Invited to play racquetball  and Tennis, with the white Attorneys..(She played neither)...and was thought to be on the fast track to a partnership...

The Partnership didn't happen and within a month, Miles Ellis was gone, Attracted by more money at another firm...

Yvette felt betrayed...She had done a lot of the legwork for that case and had built most of the winning argument...She never got credit and was stuck in a rut until Me, Bee Bee, Sofia and Khalil came along.. 

Yvette looked around the conference room...

She listened to the oral arguments being given...

And she wondered if she was on the wrong side of this argument.

III-

The Oral Arguments continued..

The Only things that Partner Michael Pratt was happy about was one, this hadn't spilled out to the media and two there was not going to be a six million dollar payout...Perhaps a two million dollar payout at best.

Due to Kahlil and my bargaining skills.

Our client, Attorney William Flowers was adamant that none of this happened and that he reached out and got her a raise and a promotion purely on merit and that she was now power hungry and attempting to extort the firm.

Yvette sat surprisingly quiet, mostly listening to the proceedings..

Like Yvette, Jade felt that we were on the wrong side of this issue... She had nothing to go on...No eyewitnesses....No recording...Not even a written journal or record of the harrassment.. Just He say, She say...Hearsay.

Bee Bee and Sofia asked good questions of both sides...but mostly stayed neutral...

Both women thought back to their own debacle-With former Judge, Pinkney Bach, back when he was their client in ironically enough, a sexual harrassment case.

 Bee Bee and Sofia sat on either side of Judge  Pinkney Bach..To their utter surprise, they got a taste of how much of a horn dog he really was..

Bee Bee thought she was imagining it at first, then she realized...He was softly rubbing her thigh and inching his hand up her skirt...She removed his hand firmly...

''Are you for real??  Are you serious??" she asked him.

 He looked at her and smiled sheepishly...

His hand had inched up Sofia's skirt also....He was softly rubbing her hips, her thighs and her butt  and smiling at her..She removed his hand firmly.

''Cut it out!" she whispered.

He smiled raffishly...He was surrounded by two very voluptuous young ladies....

"You have one more time, one more time to touch me or my girls inappropriately and you're going to be sitting here by yourself..DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?" she said sternly..

"You do realize that I have a rather friendly relationship with Mr. McCluskey...Your Boss, don't you?" he said snidely...

"TRY ME!" said Yvette firmly.... I had never seen her this angry.... "TRY ME!  Touch Bee Bee, Sofia or me once more and we will all walk out of this courtroom and you can defend yourself."said Yvette

He got the message....He was thoroughly embarrassed...and he was enraged that he had been slapped by both girls.. He was no longer a judge who they were trying a case under...He was a defendant and they were his lawyers.. He was still furious..He sat like a petulant child the rest of the day with his arms folded......Saying nothing to any of us..

We were done for the day....

We had chopped the six million dollars down to two million....There would be no partnership, but she would leave the firm with a healthy severance, worth about another million dollars.She was getting half of what she had asked for.  She refused to sign an NDA agreement...

We would have to meet again tomorrow to discuss that...It had neither been proved that Flowers sexually harrassed her or not....

"Good Work Guys....And thank you for your attention to this matter. See you tomorrow." said Partner Pratt, who had done an excellent job of mediating this and keeping it quiet.

"Good Afternoon....Come on guys...Let's go over to Sam Mother's Diner.  Dinner is on me." said Ms. Yvette.

We all walked over to Sam Mother's Diner for dinner..

''Wow isn't this like old times?" I said.

"Sure is...We used to eat Breakfast ,Lunch and Dinner over here sometimes every day.." said Bee Bee.

"Except in the winter when we would go home and cook and have you guys over for dinner."said Sofia.

"Just like in law school."laughed Kahlil.

"I envied you guys, your closeness.." laughed Jade, who had lived in the apartments across the street from us...We had had her over for dinner a few times too.

"Now you all live down the street from each other. and next door to each other....The closeness never ends."laughed Ms. Yvette. She had gained not just some good employees...but close friends and family in us.

"Mind if I join you guys?" said Patricia Reynolds...  "No hard feelings?" she said and smiled.

"Of course not...Pull up a seat...This is a job and we have to do it as Attorneys."said Yvette...

We all agreed...There was no hard feelings toward Patty.

And the seven of us enjoyed comforting meals at the end of a long day..

We all were home...It was good to be home after the day we had just had...

After we all got home that night..We were all settled down with our significant others.. What better way to spend nice night  than to be making love.?

Sometime Early in the morning....A woman's body was found floating in the Wissahickon River...

They managed to pull the body out of the water before the body floated away....

Crime Scene Investigators snapped photos and made observations...

"Her pocketbook was still strapped around her neck.."said  a CSI man.

" There is a drivers license here and a Bar Association card as well as a job identification badge." said one of the CSI men...

"Her drivers license says her name is Alana Petrovic...."said a CSI man..

"Her Bar Association Card says the same thing...She's an Attorney...or rather...she was an attorney."  said another.

"Her job ID badge says she worked for McCluskey/Cozen/Connor & Pratt." said yet another  CSI man.

"I'm familiar with that law firm." said Lt. Tragg...

"I can't tell how long she's been in the water...The Body is cold...but not that cold...An Educated guess would say she hasn't been in the water long." said Dr. Hazel Baylor.

"Cause of death appears to be manual strangulation...."said Dr. Marcy Martin.

"A Dead Lawyer, strangled eh? I'll be at that law firm today!" said Lt. Tragg. "Get her out of here and girls, get me the Autopsy report as soon as you possibly can." said Lt. Tragg.

Both Hazel and Marcy hated being referred to as girls...They were grown women and doctors...Proffessionals..They wished to be addressed as such.

The body was put in a white body bag,  strapped to a gurney and rolled to the van...the van that would transport the body to the morgue...

HOURS LATER-

We were back in our original building...the building where our careers began....

on the 17th floor in the conference room where we had been litigating a case in which one of our attorneys was suing another one of our attorneys...

It was 11:00 am...It was an hour late and one of the litigants, Alana Petrovic had not shown up!

Partner Michael Pratt showed up...He looked like he'd seen a ghost..

"I don't know what to say.....I've got some sad news folks!  -I-I just got news that Alana.....Poor Alana is dead!!!...She was found floating in the Wissahickon River this morning...She's been murdered!" he said... 

 

 "WHAT?? MURDERED? OH MY GOD!!!!" said Yvette in shock....

"MURDERED? WHAT THE HELL?" said an equally shocked William Flowers.

"What the hell?  How could this happen?" I asked in total shock.

"Murdered?? Oh My God!" said Bee Bee.

"Murdered Aye Mios Dios."said Sofia.

"Wowwwww! Murdered!" said Kahlil.

"I can't believe it!" said Jade.

"Murdered? But Why?" asked Patty.

"That's Exactly what I want to know!" said Lt. Tragg, who marched into our conference room...

He smiled-

"Well Vettie...Nice to finally see you guys at work for a change." he said snarkily... 

 "Lieutenant ! We come to work everyday....Just because you don't run into us, doesn't mean we are not at work." said Ms. Yvette.

I smiled. He still had no idea that we had an office in another building and that we had been there for two years.

My wife was thinking the same thing...She smiled and held her head down.

Sofia didn't say a word...She too smiled.

So did her husband, Kahlil.

Jade smiled also,.

"Was there something you wanted Lieutenant?" said Patty Reynolds.

"I'm sure you've heard by now that one of your attorneys, Mrs. Alana Petrovic was found deceased in the river this morning...Just a few hours ago...She'd been murdered...I'll need anything you can tell me about her." he said.

He interviewed all of us , Everyone in the room for close to two hours and then he left...

It was some morning.

We went back to our building...We arrived just in time for lunch in our cafeteria with our friends.

We were glad to be back and secretly relieved to be done with that litigation...Though sorry Alana was dead.

Our firm wouldn't have to pay out three million...That was a good thing....but I felt bad thinking that I would have preferred Alana alive just the same. 

"We heard about the attorney from your firm being found murdered and in the river this morning.."said Jazzy..
 

"Yeah, Bad news travels fast...Did you guys know her?" asked Dabnis.

"Actually we did. We were in a litigation with her just yesterday...."said Yvette.

"Oh wow...That's crazy...you just see somebody and they're dead the next day....Wowwwww!"said Kayla.

"Life is fragile..."sighed Ray.

"It is indeed."said Jessica.

"She was murdered!!...Anybody know who or why?" asked Chip.

"Lt. Tragg grilled us at our old office for an hour or so today." I said.

"Yeah, he's on the case."laughed Bee Bee sarcastically.

"That means it won't be solved or he'll arrest the wrong person." said Karen.

Lee Phillips cracked up laughing.

"You guys are brutal!" she said, still laughing.

"You laugh but she's telling the truth."said Natalie.

"Watch him make a hasty arrest within the next 48 hours..."said David.

"And he'll be all wrong." said Brooke.

"And either it won't get solved..Or you guys will end up solving it."laughed Brooke's husband, Sean.

"That's usually the way it happens...Jade or Donnie Ray usually solve the crime." said Sofia.

"I can't tell you how many ADA's have secretly told us they wished Jade or Donnie Ray was working for them...Anybody but Lt. Tragg." said Kahlil.

"Other cops have told us that they'd rather work with anyone other than Lt. Tragg."laughed Jade.

Zoey cracked up-

"That's too funny." she said.

"Funny, but more than likely true."said Lem.

"How does he keep a job, being that incompetent?" asked Renee.

"He's part of the old boys network...His Father was a Lieutenant and his Uncle was a Captain." said Tyrell.

"Olivia told me that years ago, her father beat the crap out of his uncle...Who was known as a brutal cop."said Tony.

"Yeah he got brutal with her pops and it was the wrong one and the wrong night...His uncle wound up with a broken jaw, both of his eyes nearly swollen shut and a broken hand... He was so embarrassed that after he got out of the hospital,  he put in for retirement. He couldn't show his face in the neighborhood..Everyone having seen him get his ass kicked and all." said Paris.

"Olivia's father was a Middleweight Boxer...He had been Fleet Champion when he was in the Marine Corps and fought 29 bouts as a professional, losing only once...He could handle himself...He wasn't just some guy on the street who Jack Tragg, that was Lt. Tragg's uncle could push around and beat on and when he fell upon Mr. Bennett..It was the wrong time and the wrong night.." said Yvette, who had heard the same story...

''WOWWWW!"said Carlos.

"Lt. Tragg fouled up a number of my cases when I was an ADA...I never wanted to work with him again."said Nina Rios.

 

 "Guys....Buckle Up!  With Lt. Tragg involved... We may be in for yet another murder case.I just have a feeling."said Ms. Yvette.

I had a feeling she was right.  This wasn't over.

Bee Bee, Sofia, Kahlil and even Ms. Jade were quiet.

"You could be right Vettie. But I sure hope you're wrong." said Virginia.

"She's Not!" said Jetty.
