Saturday Is Alright (For Murder)

SATURDAY AFTERNOON-

A Nice beautiful afternoon at the Moshulu....Beverly and her husband, Nelson were out on a date...a "date-date" as she and her friends called it...Just them...Nobody else in their group...It was a Saturday Night.  They had all had brunch at the NO I.D. Bar and then come home...Not going to Bayside for shopping this Saturday.  Seems like everybody was doing their own thing.

"This is nice...Really nice..."said Beverly , smiling. 

"I remember when we were working at the Public Defender's Office, Larry North took you here.. You and Jazzy left early....She washed and did your hair and you had on a sexy dress like that... and you dropped by to see your auntie... I thought you looked so beautiful and I felt sooo bad because I couldn't afford to take you out like that on a night like that..." said Nelson.

"I'm Sorry...Sorry I didn't take into account your feelings then....Sorry I was still looking for a fly guy with a lot of cash and flash to wine and dine me....Sorry I couldn't see that all along, you were the one who really loved me..." said Beverly ,rubbing his hands softly....

"All is forgiven, you're here with me now....You're my wife....and I'm your husband...." said Nelson.

"And I couldn't be happier..." said Beverly...

They held hands and kissed....

Their passionate kiss was broken up by a somewhat familliar face...

A tall Muscular Black man with dreads, carrying a rose...

"Beverly West....Does your sexy auntie know what you're here doing?" he laughed...

He was Billy Harris...an ex-football player, once on death row and successfully defended by Olivia, Beverly and Kayla and the man who had the distinction of having taken both Beverly and Kayla's virginity when they were in high school.

"My sexy auntie is probably minding her own business as you should be doing.... This is my HUSBAND, Attorney Nelson East..." she said.   "Nelson, this is a ahhhh childhood acquaintance.

Billy Harris."said Beverly.

"I've heard of you...Central High Football right? All Public..." said Nelson, shaking his hand..

"That was me....I own three gyms in the city....This is my card...Come through if you get a chance.Hey Bev, How is Kayla?" he asked.

"She's fine.." said Beverly dryly....

"She married?" he asked.

"Yes she is.....Happily.   Her name is Kayla St. Jacques now..." said Beverly.

"WOWWWWWWW! Well here is an extra card, give it to her...Maybe her and her husband might want to visit one of my gyms." said Billy.  "Nice seeing you again Bev." said Billy as he walked by..

"Woww, nice guy....Was he Kayla's ex?" asked Nelson.

"Yeah...Mine too!..He was a playa..." said Beverly dryly..."That's the closest me and Kayla ever came to hating each other..Billy Harris was on the football team at Central High...Quarterback...He was all Public..and Central was playing for the City championship that year...We were a perfect 8-0 that year...He was so fine...Oh my god...Every girl dreamed of being with Billy Harris.."said Beverly.

''So one of you had him...I'm guessing it was Kayla." said Nelson.

"Well actually, We both did!  I had him first..."said Beverly..."He was coming around the house...calling me and taking me out after school everyday...He was walking me home from school too! I used to call Kayla..all giddy about this guy I had just met...I would never tell her his name..Only that he was a senior...We were in 10th grade then...I wanted no chance of any slip ups...My Father would've killed me if he knew I was sneaking around with an 18 year old boy and I was barely only 16. First time I ever kept a secret from Kayla..."said Beverly.

"For a minute ,I was the envy of every girl in Girls High...but I suspected that Billy Harris was after one thing and one thing only..The pan-taysssss ,but he was so fine and for a big time senior like him to be interested in a 10th grader like me...Well...that wasn't so much to ask!"said Beverly laughing a little.

He was my first...and...it was quite nice....Ouuuuuuu, He was a smooth operator, He was slow, patient and said all of the right things , just like you Nelson. "So what happened? How did Kayla find out ? Or you find out about Kayla?" asked Nelson, very interested in the story now.

''Well...They say women are gossipers and haters...but you guys can do us one better sometimes..There was a guy on the football team named Russell...Russell Cummings ,who had liked me since 9th grade and I believe he just wanted to get in my panties too...but I wouldn't give him the time of day...and one day after school ,he kept begging me and I kept saying no...And finally I told him that I was Billy's girlfriend. ,Russell told me..

"You all strung out over Billy Harris..And he's banging your cousin too!!!...Probably tellin her the same stuff he tells you..And you won't let me nowhere near that good stuff...And you two dummies aint the only girls he's bangin...There are others." he said.

"I said "Shut your lying mouth Russell Cummings....My cousin tells me everything...I'd know if she was seeing Billy or anybody..She's dating a boy from West Philly"I said.

"Oh Yeah? Take a ride with me..And if I'm right, you gone give me some of that tonight.I aint jivin...you got me as hot as a firecracker in a gas station..." he said.

"I'm not promising you nothin Russell...but you're going to be wrong anyway." I said.

"Uh Oh...I know how this is going to turn out..."laughed Nelson.

"It was the first time I'd ever rode in his car... He drove me into West Philly and I saw the two of them together, Kissing..... I confronted them both....He looked like a deer caught in between the cross hairs...He had the nerve to get mad at me for spying on him and he and Russell got into a fight...He called his team-mate a snitch. Kayla swore up and down that she had no idea...She really didn't because I had been very,very vague about who I was seeing and even though she asked..I never did tell her, but I was still hurt  that she was seeing the same guy I was seeing." said Beverly.

"That love triangle cost us the City Championship...We lost to Overbrook....and it was their Senior year....Kayla and me were just in 10th grade....We didn't speak to each other for like a month....That hurt because Kayla was more than just my cousin...She was my best friend, my sister...And to make it worse...She was still letting Billy Harris come back and hit it every now and then throughout 11th grade and our senior year..Regardless of who she was dating...She just had a thing for that man.... Kayla and I got over our little brouhaha...eventually! My daddy discovered that something was up and he took me over her house and demanded an answer...Neither one of us wanted to tell him that we had lost our virginity over an 18 year old boy, the same 18 year old boy....I started crying and Kayla hugged me and I hugged her and we ended our beef."said Beverly.

Jazzy and Natalie were relieved...Neither of them wanted to take sides...They loved us equally..." said Beverly.

Renee or Nay Nay as we called her then was oblivious...She was head over heels in love with our "Play Cousin" Daniel..

"She was his first and he was her first..They were so cute together..."gushed Beverly.

"WOWWW! THAT IS SOME STORY!" said Nelson.

"Yeah, one I'd rather forget.... The story I like best is how you and me wound up together." said Beverly..

"Yeah , me too!" said Nelson..

And they began kissing passionately again...

"Honey Bun?" Nelson whispered...

"Yes?" answered Beverly..

"Are you wearing a thong?" he asked..

Beverly sighed...

"Yes Baby." she said and discreetly slid the slit in her dress up..

allowing him to see the lightweight cotton thong she was wearing..

A Pitcher of Fruit filled Sangria and two full glasses came to their table. They quaffed it down slowly, continuing to laugh and talk.

A Pretty girl sat across from Beverly and Nelson...Her name was Sheila Addison. She watched them talking, smiling ,occasionally kissing....She wished that her current relationship was like that.. It had turned abusive and bitter.

She smiled when Billy Harris, who she didn't know , walked up to her..

"Hellllo young lady....I see you are sitting here by yourself, mind if I join you?" he asked.

"I wished I was sitting here by myself, but I'm not...My Boyfriend went to the restroom, he'll be back shortly.." she said and smiled.

"Oh!  I didn't think someone as lovely as you would be sitting alone...Well, here is my card...I own three gyms around the city...perhaps you and he would like to visit them one day..." he said, smiling ,passing her his business card..

Just then it was snatched out of her hand..

"No she aint got no need for your business card and NO AINT NEITHER ONE OF US COMIN TO YO GOTDAMN GYM, GET OUT OF HERE!" snarled her boyfriend.. Derek Black. who punched her in the eye..

"AND YOU STOP BEING SO DAMN FLIRTATIOUS!" he snarled.

"OWWWWWWWWW!" said Sheila.

"Hey man, you didn't have to be like that." said Billy Harris.

"MIND YO BUSINESS YA GOOF ASS!" said Derek who took a swing at Billy Harris, 

Billy Harris ducked and clocked  Derek Black, knocking him backwards on to a table, knocking everything off the table and spilling him on to the floor...

"OUUUUUUUUUUUU!" he said.. He didn't want to try anything with Billy ,who was three inches taller and about 25 pounds heavier...

He was done for the night.... People stared in shock and surprise....

Billy tipped his head to the young woman, who was nursing a black eye and promptly left the Moshulu..

Nursing his swollen jaw and embarrassment, Derek Black got to his feet...He brushed himself off, he grabbed the young woman...."Come on Sheila, we are leaving...PAY THE DAMN BILL!"he barked...

"Ouuuuu what a beast...You couldn't melt him and pour him on me... He punched her in the eye and she didn't do anything."said Beverly.

"Yeah he hit a woman, but you see what happened when he hit a man." said Nelson...

''Come on, let's go home....Let's not let that incident spoil our night." said Beverly as she and Nelson got up and paid their bill and left.

An otherwise beautiful night...

At Derek Blak's house...

After the disastrous night at the Moshulu...He was surprisingly gentle...

He got Sheila some ice for her face that was swollen. 

"I'm sorry baby...I-I hate to get like this...but you get me so jealous...Just the thought of another man with his hands on you drives me nuts." he explained.

"I told you I would never cheat on you...." said Sheila Addison.

"I know, I know..And I'm so sorry...Just the thought of another man with his hands on you drives me nuts." he explained.

"Here ,drink this...It'll chill you....and take your clothes off as I run a hot bath for you,.." said Sheila.

"Thank you baby!" he said..

She passed him a Mason Jar with Sweet Tea, mixed with Bourbon in it... He gulped it down..

She ran a tub of hot water and squirted body wash in it.....

Derek Blak was woozy, woozier than usual.....That drink had a kick to it , he thought.

At Beverly and Nelson's domicile-

"I wore this dress one time before...My Auntie said it was scandalous...She said my father would hit the ceiling if he saw me in a dress this scandalous." said Beverly...

It took Nelson no time at all to get undressed....

Beverly had told Kayla about running into Billy Harris and the fight..

''Where he goes trouble follows...You think we should have left him on Death row?" asked Kayla.

"How about that?" said Beverly, laughing...They had defended him a few years back after he had been convicted of murdering a woman and sentenced to death...They got his sentence dropped and a new trial ordered in which they got an acquittal...He was very grateful...

"Yall know yall wrong for that..."laughed Nelson...As the three of them laughed....

"You two went to Moshulu for a date date...Was it nice?"asked Josie.

"It was wonderful....We didn't eat at all..We had a pitcher of Sangria..." said Beverly...

"You all were good and soused...I'm glad you made it home safely..."said Olivia.

"And you two didn't make Super Brunch this morning, So I know you're famished.."said Paris.

"Yes...You got that right,."said Nelson.

"I'm sure you weren't thinking about food this morning." said Bresha,.

"No we weren't." said Beverly...

"I know that's right.."laughed Tony....

"UMMMMMMMMMMPH!  YALL  NASTY!"laughed Alfreda...

"Aint they though?" laughed Olivia.

Rockland was busy filling his plate with Spaghetti.

 "Ouuuuuuuu I love this, having a neighborhood dinner."said Yvette.

"This is so cool...and it's just us...Neighborhood folks." said Gary.

"Mannnnnnn this is nice, good hot food."said Keith Jones..

''We didn't have to cook...This was all catered." said Bee Bee.

" Yes and very well catered at that..." said Sofia as she made plates for her self and her husband...

"Thank you Mamasita." said Kahlil.

" "Ummmmmm this is sooo good." said Jade.

"We eat well don't we?" said Danny.

"We do don't we?" said Virginia.

"We sure do."laughed Jetty...

 

"I'm glad Billy Harris didn't ruin your night." said Jazzy...

"Not even close." said Beverly.

"And he won the fight."said Dabnis,laughing...

"Let's not talk about him....I don't want him showing up."joked Kayla.

"You and Bev are covered , you got me and Nelson."joked Ray.

" This is nice....A nice fall dinner for all of us." said Jessica.

"We'll sleep well tonight."said Chip....

"This was right on time..." said Karen..

"We won't have much clean up...Won't be any food left..."said B.L.

"I knowww.." said Natalie.

She and her husband, David were really chowing down.

"Slow down over there...You're going to choke."joked Brooke, looking at her husband really chow down.

"I'm fine."laughed Sean.

"This is sooo nice...Thank you Renee for putting this together." said Zoey.

"Yes Thank you Renee." said Lem.

"You're all welcome..." said Renee.

"You know how my wife loves to entertain."laughed Tyrell.

"Thank you Renee, this is sooo nice and everything is delicious."said Lee..

"Yes...everything is just delicious." said Matthew..

"This is sooo nice Renee...Thank you for inviting all of us." said Nina....

''Everything is delicious." said Carlos.

"You're all welcome." said Renee.

Bottles of Wine were passed down the table with glasses for everyone...

It was the culmination of a great weekend..

AT PENN'S LANDING...A BODY WAS BEING FISHED OUT OF THE RIVER-

"Black Male, Early 40's....no sign of violence....though there is a gash on his head..."said a CSI man.

"He could have fallen in the water, and hit his head on something."said another CSI man..

"What?" asked another as the body was photographed.

"No signs of trauma....and with him being in the water there is no telling how long he's been dead...but there is no decomp....So I'm going to say he hasn't been dead long." said Assistant Coroner Dr. Marcy Martin...

"He's got  drivers license in his pocket.. It reads Derek Blak." said one of the detectives at the scene...and a business card that reads Billy Harris- Harris Gyms." said another detective.

"I'm going to label this a suspicious death...leaning toward accident until we get him to the morgue and examine him.." said Dr. Hazel Baylor...

"It's either a Murder or a Suicide." said Lt. Arthur Tragg.

 

"Lieutenant we'll determine that after a thorough examination..." said Dr. Hazel Baylor..."And we'll get the autopsy to you as soon as possible." she said before he could ask.

Derek Blak's body was put in a body bag and strapped to a gurney and wheeled away to a waiting van that would take the body to the morgue for further examination.

Death didn't take a holiday.....Not even on a Sunday afternoon in early Fall.

IV-

MONDAY MORNING!

We had a light breakfast of coffee and doughnuts and Bagels and Cream Cheese...

"Dig in folks, this is courtesy of our neighborhood coffee shop down the street." said Alfreda,

"Ouu Thank you Freda, this was a good idea."said Olivia.

 

"A Nice light breakfast to start the week."I said.

Beverly was sitting on Nelson's lap, munching on a bagel and sipping coffee..

Nelson was holding her tight...

"Pass me the cream cheese Bree." said Josie..

"Here you go." said Bresha.

As we ate...We watched the news on the monitor on our wall.. It showed Lt. Tragg and armed policemen with Billy Harris in handcuffed... "FORMER DEATH ROW INMATE ARRESTED FOR YET ANOTHER MURDER!!!.."

It showed a photo of Derek Blak...

"YOUNG MAN'S BODY FOUND FLOATING IN RIVER NEAR PENNS LANDING!

POLICE BELIEVE HE WAS KILLED ELSEWHERE!" came the report. 

"That's the young guy you and Kayla were so ga -ga over when you were in high school, that we defended a few years ago..on murder charges." said Olivia.

 

"I remember him!" I said.

"Yes, he was at the Moshulu Saturday Night...He got into a fight with the guy they claim he killed.

I don't believe he killed him....I don't." said Beverly.

"He apparently was giving his business card to a young lady who appeared to be sitting by herself and struck up a conversation... The dead guy there, Her boyfriend, came out of the rest room....Punched the girl in the eye and then took a swing at Billy... Billy clocked him, knocked him over a table on to the floor and that was it.,...It wasn't much of a fight... One punch and it was over and Billy left...He didn't even seem angry or upset..." said Nelson.

"Any other witnesses, besides you and Bev?" asked Josie.

"Plenty....everybody that was in the restaurant that night...."said Beverly...

"Do you think he's being set up?" asked Olivia.

''Who can say? The girl he was with was docile...He blacked her eye and she didn't put up a fuss."said Nelson.

''She paid the drink bill and left with him." said Beverly.

"Oh My God!  That couldn't have been me." said Bresha.

"Let's hope it never is...I lived with an abusive man once...a long time ago...It's no picnic." said Alfreda.

"You think we should check him out..see if he wants our help?" asked Olivia.

"Why Not? He can pay our fee now...He owns three businesses."laughed Beverly....

Beverly's phone vibrated...She laughed.

''Speak of the Devil....He just sent me a text...He needs our help ...he's been falsely arrested and accused of murder...Imagine that."laughed Beverly...

AND AT THE BRIDGE BUILDING-

In their Modern Cafeteria where they were eating breakfast.. Kayla's phone is also ringing....

"Well Look at this...Here is a country not heard from in a long time...It's Billy Harris...Remember him

Jazzy?" asked Kayla.

"Yeah !Your old Boo Thang from High School, What does he want?" asked Jazzy...

"My services!.....My legal services.....Apparently he's been arrested and charged with murder!" said Kayla.

"You gonna Rep him?" asked Jazzy...

"Why Not?  Unlike the last time I repped him...He can afford to pay me now...Beverly told me he owns three business in the city." laughed Kayla.
