COURTROOM C-

We were returning to court for the verdict in the fourth trial of our client, Sonya Still,

accused of murdering her abusive supervisor and a friend of his who had both sexually assaulted her....and others.

"All rise for the honorable Judge Thelma Harper..."said the Bailiff...

We rose...Judge Harper was a very new Judge...She was tough, but fair, and very knowledgeable of the law...She had been very fair to us and very understandable...We liked her...Almost as much as we liked Judge Kelly Ann...

She was very patient and like us exhausted at this point...

This was the jury coming back for a fourth time...a fourth trial... The first trial had ended in a 6-6 hung jury.... The second trial, which we thought we did pretty good in came back with another 6-6 split...a third trial ended in a 7-5 split our way, but still a hung jury... and so here we were after a fourth trial being told that the jury had come to a decision... We had asked Bruce Greene to drop the charges , after three hung juries...but he refused...And so we went through yet a fourth trial...We were all exhausted and nearly burned out.

Assistant District Attorney Bruce Greene looked extremely hopeful....The two 6-6 splits gave him hope that he indeed was fighting a winning battle and against us....who he badly wanted to best. The 7-5 split in the last case didn't deter him....He felt as though he had won this one...We disagreed! 

He felt as though he had worn us down.....He was close to being right!

"I'm pretty sure we won this one."said a very hopeful Olivia.

 

"I sure hope so...I'm ready to give up....I'm sooo tired." said Sonya.

"Don't give up...We got you and as I told you...We are with you until the wheels come off." I said.

"If we somehow lose....Nelson and I wrote an appeal that we'll file immediately...."said Beverly.

"Yes, Bruce was out of pocket with a lot of things he tried to pull in all of these trials...and I made note of all of them..."said Nelson.

Josie had sat up with us late at night and helped us write our appeals..We were ready for anything.

"I really would hate to lose to him....He's been strutting around like a peacock this entire time..."said Josie.

"I'd hate to lose to him too! We would never hear the end of it." said Bresha..

"Has the Jury come to a decision?" said the Judge.

"Yes your honor we have..." said The Jury Foreman....

This was a relief...We were used to hearing -"I'm sorry your honor, we can not come to a decision on this.." and she'd make them go back and deliberate again...and they'd come back and still have no decision.  We waited three days, the first trial...Two days, the second trial and three days, the last trial and they still couldn't come to a decision.

Today...after only a few hours...We had a decision at least... Remember...these were four different sets of jurors... Only we, the attorneys were exhausted..

The foreman passed the decision to the bailiff ,who passed it to the Judge. She read it and showed no emotion....Then she softly said-"Read it" and passed it back to the bailiff.

"WE THE JURY REPRESENTING THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA IN THE MATTER OF COMMONWEALTH VS.  SONYA STILL rule on the following count-

"COUNT ONE- FIRST DEGREE MURDER AGAINST WILLIAM EARL THOMPSON, We find the defendent- NOT GUILTY!"

"COUNT TWO-FIRST DEGREE MURDER AGAINST CLYDE COOPER, WE find the defendent-

NOT GUILTY!"

"COUNT THREE- USE OF AN INSTRUMENT OF CRIME TO DO BODILY HARM, WE FIND THE DEFENDENT, NOT GUILTY!"

Bruce Greene was stunned....He thought he should have won... He demanded the jury be polled.

They were and all twelve jurors said "NOT GUILTY"

He was astounded.....He jumped up and down , he spun around like a top and he tossed his suit jacket in the air...

"STUPID JURY, STUPID JURY!!! WHAT TRIAL WERE YOU LISTENING TO? STUPID JURY!" he screamed....

"ADA GREENE- CONTROL YOURSELF! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU???   "yelled Judge Harper...

"I would like to thank the jurors for your attention to this matter...You can all exit through the rear doors...Your checks will be mailed to you. Thank you again."she said with a smile.

''Well Neicey Poo! We did it again!"said Olivia.

"YES WE DID AUNTAY!" said a jubilant and relieved Beverly.

Olivia and Beverly leaped into the air and high fived each other..."WHOOOOOOOOOOO WEEEEEE!"

Bruce Greene became even more unhinged seeing Olivia and Beverly's celebration... He once again jumped up and down , He spun around like a top and he tossed his suit jacket in the air again...

 "STUPID JURY, STUPID JURY!!! WHAT TRIAL WERE YOU LISTENING TO? STUPID JURY!" he screamed....

"Ummmmmmmm come here you.." said Olivia, taking me in her arms...

"Awwwwwwwwww girl!!!" I moaned..

 

As we began kissing...

Bresha hugged her...We stayed together and we got a win." said Bresha.

"You guys won on sex appeal.....The men on the jury were busy looking at You gals and your short tight skirts....and your blouses ,showing your breasts and your soft ,whispery voices...Not to mention your client...They were so turned on they weren't paying attention to the facts of this trial." said Bruce.

"Bruce, you need a good meal and then you need to go home, get a hot shower and just relax..."said Olivia softly....

"Gee, I thought I was being helpful...."said Olivia.

"Ignore him, yall did good..Way to hang in there gang!" came the voice of Attorney Deke Richards... 

"Heyyyyyy Deke!" said Olivia.

 

"Heyyyy Mann!" I said.

We hadn't seen him in a few years!

"Heyyyyy Deke, where have you been?" asked Beverly.

"I was in Atlanta for awhile and then out in San-Francisco...Which was why I gave this young lady to you guys to defend.I had a big case out there....I didn't have the time to devote to this case like I should have...but I knew you guys would knock it out the park....It was kinda close there for awhile."he said..looking at Sonya.

"Thank you babe!" said Sonya..

"You're welcome babe" he said kissing her .

Their kissing was a lot more familliar than we at first thought it should be.. He had given her to us to defend in the middle of the first trial.....He had already picked the jury when we took over as her counsel and got a 6- 6 split hung jury...The next two juries were 6-6 and 7-5 before we finally carved out an acquittal. Deke had chosen to return at the right time...

"So where are you guys drinking tonight?" he asked.

"Well we are going to the Bridge Building for Dinner....and we'll be drinking at this bar across the street called the NO I.D. Bar." said Nelson.

"I know where it is...I'll meet you guys there." said Deke.

"I knew you'd know where it was." laughed Olivia.

Josie smiled...

"So what are you doing Sonya?" asked Bresha.

"I'm going home, take a hot shower and just chillax...." said Sonya.

"You deserve it girl..."said Beverly.

II-

THE BRIDGE BUILDING-

 We were having a delicious dinner at the modern cafeteria at the Bridge Building.

All of our friends were there.

 "Livy I'm so glad you guys got an acquittal today...I was so worried about you guys and this particular case."said Yvette.

"I hate hung juries and especially against Bruce Greene."said Keith Jones.

"If he had won and over you guys, wouldn't be anyone who could tell him anything."said Bee Bee.

"Last week he thought he was on the verge of winning...He was asking several young ladies out on dates...." said Sofia.

"He was High on the hog...He entered this week just knowing he had a victory...."said Kahlil.

"I know he is feeling some kind of way right now!"said Jade.

''Did he throw his suit jacket in the air?" asked Virginia,laughing....

"Or Spin around like a top?" laughed Jetty. 

"He did all of that."laughed Olivia.

 

"He demanded that the jury be polled...Then he accused us of using sex appeal to sway the jury, which was made up of 7 males and 5 females."I said.

"Meaning the 5 females must have been lesbians." said Beverly, bringing us all to loud laughter.

"I think he was turned on more than everybody else..."said Nelson.

"Oh he's back?...He was out on the West Coast..."said Yvette.

"He'll be joining us at NO I.D...He's buying a round of drinks for all of us."said Olivia.

"It's so nice to have a cool bar right across the street from where we work." said Kayla.

"This is so cool and mellow. It's going to start getting darker earlier soon."said Jessica.

"Yeah, I know...but that's cool...We don't have to drive or wait for the train to come home."said Chip.

Bruce seemed to like our building and the NO I.D. Bar across the street here of late to kind of torment us in his sick way...but tonight, he was probably having dinner at Sam Mother's Diner.

As we ate dinner...across town in the Judges Chambers..

Judge Thelma Harper was in the Judges Chambers freshening up...When she noticed someone familliar at the door.

"Good Afternoon your honor." came he voice and the seductive smile of Attorney Deke Richards.

"I knew I should've locked this door." she said and smiled.

"Is that anyway to greet a friend, who has been out of town?" he laughed..

"Hello Mrs. Bennett-Alexander.....Let me say, you and your team did some great lawyering today.." said Judge Harper.

"Thank you...It was an honor to try that case in your courtroom."said Olivia.

 

I was silent, but I couldn't help noticing how shapely and attractive the judge was and how she looked a little plastered.

"I've never seen this judge...She must be new." said her husband, Tony.

"Nice Night....That Judge seems like a nice lady." said Alfreda.

"I remember her when she was a defense attorney....years ago....Then she dropped off the radar...Now she's a Judge." said Rockland. 

"Yes, I remember her too as both a Defense Attorney and an Assistant District Attorney." said Nina.

"Small World." said her husband, Carlos.

"Hello Mrs. Jones -Lockwood....Nice Seeing you again."said Judge Harper.

 

 "Ohhhhhhhh hello your honor." said Yvette.

Gary, like me couldn't help  noticing how shapely and attractive the judge was and how she looked a little plastered.

Her husband, Danny Ho just laughed.

"Seems like I remember her from years ago."said Virginia.

"Yes, she was both a defense attorney and an Assistant District Attorney before she became a Judge...I know her quite well." said her husband, Jetty.

"Stop staring at me...It's getting you overly excited and we aren't close to leaving yet,." said Lee Phillips to her boyfriend, Matthew Akes,.

"You're too late with the overly excited part..."said Matthew...

At 2:00 AM, we all piled into our two buses that would whisk us back to our neighborhood and our homes safely

And Deke and Judge Harper got in his car and sped off to the Judge's Apartment...

"Yeah....They got an acquittal, just like you guys did and he demanded the jury be polled...After they were...He fell on the floor and kicked his legs up like a four year old having a tantrum...

I felt so sorry for Judge Kelly Ann, having to put up with his tantrums.."said Deke.

"You were at the trial?" asked Olivia.

"The last day......Uh Thelma and I returned the night before the jury went into deliberation."said Deke.

"Thelma as in Judge Thelma Harper...???..You two are pretty close huh?  Can I assume you two are a thing?" asked Olivia with a sly grin..

"Oh Yeah, we've been seeing each other for the past three weeks...which is why I'm here....It seems everytime I get ready to do something , a case is dropped in my lap." said Deke...

"Comes with the territory my man of being one of the top defense attorneys in the city."I said and smiled.

"I think your wife and Vettie are really the top defense attorneys in the city and the smartest...Both of you have four brilliant and young attorneys helping you out...Liv, you got Beverly, her husband, Nelson, Josie and Bresha and you got Donnie Ray here as an investigator...Vettie has Keith, Beatrice, Sofia and Kahlil and Jade....Me, I got no one....

I often use Milt Lewis as an investigator...but I have no one to help me out otherwise...Which is why I've been throwing cases to you guys....And thankfully, you've both been successful....I have another case to throw your way if you're not busy...." he said.

"Lucky for you we aren't....What's up?"  asked Olivia.

"I've got a client accused of murder...Named Lester Sams... He's up in the Men's Correctional Center...During Arraignment, I failed to get him his freedom...His Mother is a church woman...

Her church and the local N.A.A.C.P. have raised close to 100 large for his defense...I'm splitting the difference with you guys....if you take the case.... Thelma tells me I need to get a staff...I'm looking at young recent graduates of Middleton, Drexel, Temple and PENN...Haven't picked anybody yet..."he said.

The way he kept saying and deferring to "Thelma"   ,Judge Harper told me that she definitely had a hold on him....A Hold like none of the women in his past ever had...

"What happened between you and Mya Andrews? I thought you two were hot and heavy a few years ago."said Olivia

speaking of a young attorney , Deke was enamored with about five years ago.

"She got married in 2023...Guess she got tired of waiting for me and uh I don't think her family was ready to have a Black in law...."he chuckled.

"WOWWWW!" said Josie.

"Thelma and I are more compatible...and even though she is a year older than me...We connect on so many levels. Anyway...in two days..we are going to Hawaii...a little vacation we'd planned for awhile, when this case came up...I could really use your help." said Deke soberly...

"Ouuuu Hawai!!!!OUUUUUUU!...Sounds like love!"said Olivia.  We'll visit your guy at Men's Correctional within the next two days."said Olivia ,pleased to have another case after two weeks of inactivity...

"I don't know what it is Liv, but it's the realest thing I've felt in a long time.."said Deke somberly...
