Midway Past A Crisis

Friday Morning-

Attorney James Lester had been in this smelling interrogation room known as the Fishbowl all night..

He hadn't said a word....

The room smelled bad...Like a combination of rotting trash and bad breath...

Lt. Tragg came in and sat down and stared at him...

"We've got you cold for first degree murder ,The Murder of Alicia Montez, a woman you had relations with and a problem with....You're in a lot of trouble counselor....You were seen by three of your neighbors at her doorstep a few hours before she wound up in the river with a broken neck,

you want to explain that?" he said,.

"I don't have to explain anything....I didn't kill anyone and that's all I'm going to say." said James Lester defiantly.

"Lose the attitude buddy...She had a restraining order out against you."snarled Lt. Tragg.

"She had an estranged husband....She also had a restraining order out against him too!" said James Lester, who looked at Lt. Tragg's face and then smiled.

"You didn't know did you?  You didn't check him out...You did what you usually do, rush to judgement.." he sneered,

"Don't tell me how to do my job....Right now, you are my number one suspect." said Lt. Tragg.

"May be...but I'm not saying anymore to you or anyone else without legal counsel."said James Lester. 

"And that's all you need to say...We are here James." said Olivia.

 

"Oh for cryin out loud...You guys?  My goodness , you guys get a whiff of a case that appears to be news worthy and here you come running."said an exasperated Lt. Tragg.  We were the last people he wanted to see.

"Guess we 're just stuck with each other." said Beverly....Then she sniffed... "Oh My God, it smells

worse than usual in here." she said.

"I have to agree with my wife...It smells like something died in here." said Nelson..

"Oh My God, YESSS!" said Josie.

"And I thought it was just me." snickered James Lester.

"No it definitely smells putrid in here...More than usual." said Bresha.

"Not to be funny Lieutenant, but you could learn a lot from the interrogation room in Bayside..

Now there is a class act, Brightly lit and very clean..Smells like a hospital almost." I said.

"This is a police interrogation room, not the damn Waldorf." said Lt. Tragg.

"Can we have the room so we can confer with our client Lieutenant?" asked Olivia softly.

"Bahhhhhhhhhhhhh!" snarled Lt. Tragg, leaving the room and slamming the door.

"Don't go away mad, just go away!" said James Lester. 

"What am I going to do with you James? You just can't stay out of trouble."laughed Olivia.

''Awww Liv..I'm innocent, they are trying to pin Alicia Montez's murder on me... I heard about her death on the morning news like everybody else.." said James. 

"That's your story and you're sticking with it right?" I said smiling...

''Well you know, what can I say?" said James and he and I both laughed.

"As an Attorney I don't have to tell you to talk to no one about your case...No cops, no inmates, no detectives...No one..."said Beverly.

''We are going to try to get you arraigned and out of here as soon as we can.."said Nelson.

Josie handed him a pen and some notebook paper.

"Write down the names, addresses and email adresses of anyone who can be called as a charactor witness." she said.

"Some of my clients will tell you that I'm quite a charactor."laughed James as he wrote down the names and addresses of people who could vouch for his good charactor.

Bresha laughed...Then said... "This is serious Mr. Lester..You're charged with a capital offense." she said.

"I know, but I'm innocent and I've got good lawyers." he said.

"Thanks for the vote of confidence...Now you be cool...and we'll see you in court..."said Olivia as we all piled out..

Lt. Tragg had watched the entire session from outside and had listened to every word being said.

We knew this , which why no specifics were mentioned..

Two police officers escorted James upstairs to the holding facility known as "The Cooler."

II-

FOUR DAYS LATER- TUESDAY NIGHT ,8:00 pm

COURTROOM B- 

It was Tuesday....We had lucked up and gotten an 8:00 pm  Night Court hearing for Scott, thanks to Brenda.  He had only spent

NIGHT COURT-

In Philadelphia, Night Court only operates two nights a week....Tuesday and Thursday, Tonight was Tuesday...and fortunately...We got an arraignment date of 8:00 pm. 

The Judge in this case would not be the Judge in the actual case....

Lt. Tragg was not there... He was probably snuggled up with Judge Kelly Ann at her loft...

"OUUUUUUUUUU ARTHUR!" she moaned.

"AWWWWWWWWWWWW KELLY ANN!" moaned Lt. Tragg.

as they stood in the window and began kissing...

Oblivious to the outside world.

Night court was too low profile for him anyway....No witnesses...No media..and a bunch of  Judges  and ADA's who were mostly older Judges and ADA's about to retire... Besides this wasn't a Homicide case...It didn't concern him.It was lightweight. It was in session from 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays...We were quite fortunate to get a date. 

 "Olivia ,I can't believe you got me an arraignment date so fast and at night....I never heard of Night Court." said James Lester..

"And Now you have...I first learned of Night Court when I was a Public Defender....I've used it often....They know me here...Vettie too!"said Olivia.

 

"It is very effective, depending on what kind of defendant you are." I said.

"We've got a surprise for you...Look over in the visitors section.... Sonja is here and she packed an overnight bag for you and her..."said Beverly.

Sonja waved and blew him a kiss....

"AFTER WE GET YOU OUT...YOU TWO ARE STAYING WITH US FOR AWHILE!!!...WE HAVE A FINISHED BASEMENT, CENTRAL AIR, A BIG BED....CHEST OF DRAWERS, A HALF BATHROOM WITH A SHOWER...AND A 75 inch TV SCREEN with Cable and streaming capabilities.." said Olivia.

"You guys are very confident you're going to get me out huh?" said James..

"OH YES.." said Nelson. "Our success rate is high...." he added...

"Just wait and see." assured Josie.

"Here comes the Judge, Court is in session."said Bresha.

James thought Olivia's assistant attorneys, Josie and Bresha were cute...Competent and cute..and he respected Beverly and Nelson's legal skills... Olivia had trained them all well , he thought.

The ADA that did show up was not going to be the ADA that tried the case...He had only the basic out line of the case at hand... He basically wanted to go home...So he didn't really put up much of a fight.

We presented 25 charactor witnesses. We found two additional witnesses...All either fellow attorneys or past clients of James Lester, All testified to his extreme professionalism when working cases with and for them.

We argued that James Lester, an Attorney himself , an officer of the court with no prior criminal record was not a flight risk and eagerly wanted his day in court to face these ridiculous and egregious charges.

The Judge was impressed...He knew James Lester...James had practiced in his courtroom a few times..

.He released him on his own recognizance..

"WOWWWW!  You guys are good...See ,I know I have good lawyers...

"Hi Baby!" said Sonja..

"At any rate you had a better weekend than I did." said James.

"Oh No doubt!" said Nelson as we all left the courtroom.
It was a quiet night!

At our Office /Duplex-

''Another successful night eh? Night Court really has helped us out...It beats a day arraignment with all the drama." I said.

"She did call the police....None of this looks good.. Then we have her leaving her apartment about an hour later and getting into an UBER." said Olivia.

 

"I found the UBER Driver and he said he dropped her off at Ciro's Bar...The same bar you and Ms. Ross were at sometime later...From the Bartender and patrons at Ciros...She never came in...but one guy said she met with somebody...a man in a dark trenchcoat... We got the back of him on street camera footage, but no front version and no knowledge of where they went after that..." I said.

"Do you know if the police at least know about this?" asked James.

"If I know Lt. Tragg, he probably doesn't and will resist any attempt to tell him..." sighed Beverly.

"Like Donnie Ray said..None of it looks good...For you."said Nelson.

"We are waiting for the Autopsy Report...I doubt if that will help you either." said Olivia.

"Look, after I left her apartment....I bought some groceries and I got some gas for my car...My Debit and Credit Card receipts will prove that, then I went to my job for a few hours...I've got witnesses who will attest to that...Then I picked up Sonja in town and we went to Ciros, where we were until closing and then we drove over to her  Cherry Hill Townhouse where I was for the rest of the night....You can check!" said James.

"You know we will..All of that is good...Real good...It establishes an alibi..."said Olivia.

"Here comes Josie and Bree, back from court." said Beverly...

Josie and Bresha returned from their errands..

"I've got the Autopsy Report....It's tenative...Not completed yet....Hazel said she'd call me when the complete report is ready..."said Josie.

"Thank you Jo." said Olivia.

"I've got a copy of the crime scene report and photos of the body being brought out of the river.."said Olivia.

"This report says that Alicia Montez had sex before she died...They found Semen inside of her body...

DNA is inconclusive." said Olivia.

"Well it certainly isn't mine....I haven't slept with her..."said James..

"Thou dost protest a bit much..."said Olivia , with a smile.

"We are going to get a DNA sample from you...Urine, Blood and Semen and turn it over to an independent lab, the FBI's lab and our own Medical Examiner just the same...That'll help prove your innocence." said Beverly.

"Turn your devices off and disable the GPS on all of them..Phones and Laptop" said Nelson..."We'll lock them up in our safe until after the trial.." he said.

"You can work remotely with this Portal and it can't be hacked or traced..." said Josie..

Bresha passed him a phone...

"Write this number down, remember it... Only call us on this number, don't call our business phones or personal phones...This is a burner phone...it's untraceable." she said.

"Your Associates are very thorough Olivia....You have trained them well."said James Lester, bowing.

"They earn their keep." said Olivia, smiling...

"Your guys remind me of Yvette Jones -Lockwood and her team...both teams very efficient and knowledgeable of the law and the court system."said  James with a smile. 

THE OFFICE OF ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY COURTLAND JAMES

"Did you know that James Lester was released from jail yesterday?" asked ADA Courtland James.

"WHAT? NO I DID NOT!" said A surprised Lt. Tragg.

"He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance." said ADA Courtland James.

"WHERE IS OLIVIA FINDING THESE WEAK KNEED JUDGES?" Lt. Tragg asked.. "He was indicted for First Degree Murder for cryin out loud!"he snarled.

"That's water under the bridge now....I want you to get ahead of this...Go over that woman's last 48 hours with a fine tooth comb...I heard she was married and estranged from her husband...Find him, question him...Find out anything extra you can.....Go to her apartment...I don't want any surprises in this case." he said.

"I'm on it Courtland." said Lt. Tragg.....He liked Courtland...

THURSDAY NIGHT-CURLEY'S BAR- COUPLES NIGHT

"It feels good  being out again and having a cold drink.." said James....

"It feels nice just being in your company...Thank you Olivia ,for putting us up and feeding us." said Sonja. 

"Oh it's our pleasure...We like the company..."said Olivia.

 

"We don't put up every client we have, just the coolest ones." I joked.

"Couples Night is the only night we come here...You get two free drinks for every two you buy as a couple." said Beverly.

"Four drinks for the price of one...You can't beat that." said Nelson...

"On nights like tonight...a lot of people stumble out of here drunk..." said Josie.

"But not us.."laughed Paris.

"Oh stop! A number of us have stumbled out of here...Lucky for us, we don't have to drive home."said Bresha.

"Olivia's buses drop us off at our doors."said Tony...

"Now if we stumble inside of our homes, it's on us." said Alfreda..

We all burst into loud laughter...

 ''Speaking of which, here comes another round.."said Rockland.

As more drinks arrived...

 

"Well Vettie...I can say I've worked with the best attorneys mney can buy...Next to me of course...You guys one week and Olivia and her guys the next week.."said James Lester.

"He's so modest isn't he?" laughed Sonja.

 "I know...I don't know how you stand him."laughed Yvette.

"Yeah that's right, you worked with my wife and her staff on the Kelly Grant case." said Gary.

"Yeah that was a ball."laughed Keith Jones.

"It was a good thing you trusted us at the end..."said Bee Bee,.

"I know...you would've lost a good Jury Consultant." said Sofia.

"You ever see her?" asked Kahlil.

"I'm using her to pick jurors on a case I'm working on now....She's the one who got Olivia and Beverly to represent me... My trial starts next week....I need to get this over with so I can work on my other cases....I'm assuring my clients that this will all be wrapped up soon." said James.

"Lt. Tragg has caused soooo many people inconvenience..." said Jade.

"We only get relief from him when he's out on the Marine Boat." said Lt. Danny Ho.

"Yeah you guys actually solve some cases huh?" said Virginia.

Her husband, Jetty laughed.... As another round of drinks arrived.

 

"I'm going to eat a big breakfast tomorrow." said Jazzy..
 

"Anticipating being hungry huh?" laughed her husband, Dabnis...

"We used to drink like this in college...Me and Beverly , Natalie and Jazzy." said Kayla.

"Hmmmmm I'll bet you four were something." said Ray...

"We had each other's backs...We made sure we all got home, back to the dorms safely..."said Kayla.

''We did didn't we?" laughed Jazzy ,putting her arm around Kayla.

"WOUUUUUUUUUU!!!"laughed Natalie.

Jessica smiled...She was a bit of a loner in college and later in law school...She didn't really have a group of friends until she joined the Public Defender's office...and now she was part of this huge group..

"Wow you girls had some times huh?" laughed Chip..

"You just don't know..."laughed Beverly....

"Reminds me of Me, Vettie and Liv in law school.."said Karen..

"SHHHHHHHHH! We are married ladies right now." laughed Yvette.

"YESSSSSSSSSs, PLEASE!"laughed Olivia...

"I would've loved to have seen you three in law school."laughed B.L.

''Well that was then, this is now.." said Natalie...

"SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" laughed Natalie..."That's our little secret." she said with a laugh.

"This is such a nice night and we are having such a good time." said Brooke...

"You're having a really good time."laughed her husband, Sean.

"Leave her alone, she's enjoying herself."laughed Zoey...

Her husband, Lem was enjoying his drinks and laughing...

"This night is unusually festive."said Renee.

"Yeah that's because the drinks are coming faster.."laughed Tyrell.

"Maybe they got a new bartender..."laughed Lee...

"Or a faster one."laughed Matthew.

"Uh Oh!"said Nina.

"Knew the night was too good to be true." said Carlos.

Lt. Tragg walked in...We had been used to him being in the corner with Judge Kelly Ann, but she was not in the bar tonight...and he stopped at our tables...Something he hadn't done in close to two years...

He was Angry...He looked directly at James Lester.

"YOU'RE A REMORSELESS MURDERER AND NEXT WEEK YOU'RE GOING DOWN BUDDY

AND NONE OF YOUR HIGH FALUTIN LAWYER FRIENDS ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO HELP YOU!" he snarled.

"Whatever you say man!" said James Lester.

"WHAT? YOU MURDEROUS SON OF A BITCH!" he snarled..  He was angry and he had been drinking... We wondered where Kelly Ann was...

"HEY MAN JUST GET OUT OF MY FACE!" said James....

"Come on James, Come on Over here...Just get out of his way....He's drunk and he's unhinged." said Yvette..

"Where is Kelly Ann tonight? If she was here, he wouldn't be acting like this." said Karen.

"Lieutenant you've been drinking." said Olivia.

"It's a bar...Everyone in here has been drinking." said Lt. Tragg, He was clearly drunk...

"Come on Jimmy, we don't want any trouble..." said  Sonja..

"Who the hell are you?" he slurred...

"Yo Man, just walk away from this area .Don't worry about who she is." said James...

"WHY YOUUUUUUU!" said Lt. Tragg....

Lt. Tragg threw a punch...a big mistake..

James dodged his punch and countered with a left- right combination that sent Lt. Tragg to the floor and out for the night....

An Ambulance came to the bar and took Lt. Tragg to the hospital on a stretcher.....He had a slight concussion...

We all stood outside and watched as he was taken away ...

"Geee, Lt. Tragg sure knows how to bring it out in people." said Beverly...

"Reminds me of when my dad, your grandfather knocked his uncle out...Years ago. "said Olivia.
