I Need You

 MONDAY AFTERNOON- 

The "Fishbowl" , the nickname the Detectives had given the interrogation room especially bad smelling today... It smelled like old sweat socks, urine, vomit and body odor....

Gloria Rubenstin , who should have been studying for the bar and at work prepared to serve coffee or run for documents was sitting in the smelly room... wishing she had coffee...and scared to death...She had never been in trouble before of any kind...

Lt. Tragg walked in....Though he was immacculate as usual...He smelled of a woman's fragrance...

and there was a smudge of lipstick on his collar....

Gloria, so used to helping her bosses at Lemann and Curtis ,Attorneys at Law took a disinfectant wipe out of her purse and wiped the lipstick off of his collar.

"Hot Date last night huh?" she said with a smile.

"Don't worry about my date....You're in a lot of trouble missy.... We know you were in that car on that lovers lane with Robert Curtis that night....Your DNA  was on the condom found in the back seat...Your fingerprints were found on the lethal pill bottle, a bottle filled with Cyanide laced pills... We know you were with him....The Street Cam caught you leaving that lovers lane and we caught the bus you exited on and we've talked to the bus driver of that bus...It appears you fell asleep and he had to wake you up to inform you of your stop."said Lt. Tragg ,looking imperious.

"I'm going to say this and this is ALL I AM GOING TO SAY- I DID NOT KILL RICHARD CURTIS....I liked him...I liked him a lot...I DID NOT KILL HIM!" said Gloria and then she said no more..

Lt. Tragg badgered her for an HOUR AND A HALF.....trying to get her to sign a confession, telling her the courts would go easy on her if she saved the state the cost of a trial...telling her that he "had her cold" , Telling her that her being with a married man wouldn't look right in the "court of public opinion." She wouldn't budge...

 

 "Good Morning Lieutenant......Mmmmmmm that fragrance you're wearing... I wear that sometimes...It's pretty expensive...."said Yvette....She knew that Judge Kelly Ann Mercer wore that fragrance..  She had been in the store when she had purchased it...She smiled.. She knew he knew what she was getting at...

I laughed.. I knew how thin skiined Lt. Tragg was.

"Gloria, we brought you some coffee....we figured it's better than the swill they serve in here." said Bee Bee.

"OHHHHHH BLESS YOU BEATRICE!" said Gloria, hugging Bee Bee and devouring the coffee..

She had craved a cup all morning.

"And I bought you a bottle of cold water for later."said Sofia.

"Oh My God!!! Sofia, you are an angel.."said an ecstatic Gloria....Glad to see a semblance of a friend..

"Lieutenant , can we have the room please?" asked Kahlil..

He didn't say anything, but he did leave and slam the door.

"Judge Mercer has a lot more work to do on him....Today he was only 50 percent less arrogant than before."remarked Jade..

Gloria smiled.

"I'm so glad you came..." she said. 

 Yvette pointed to the listening devices around... She pulled out a piece of paper and wrote on it.

"It's Monday....We are going to try and arraign you in Night Court tomorrow night...So be ready to roll."

She then crumbled the paper up and put it back in her purse..

"I know about Night Court..." she whispered back... "Thank You." she said.

I pulled out a piece of paper and gave her a pen..

"I want you ro write down a list of any and everybody we can use as a charactor witness for you..

Give me names, addresses and phone numbers..." I said.

"I can give you 12 people I know quite well." she said.

"WOWW...You really did want some hot coffee, you devoured that thermos."laughed Bee Bee..

"She killed that water too!"laughed Sofia.

"Oh yes, thank you....I'm hungry, but this will hold me. "said Gloria.

"When they take you upstairs they'll give you a lunch...A Hot Dog, Some Chips and a Soda."said Kahlil.

''You just be cool...We'll get you out.."said Jade.

"Thank you sooooo much!" said Gloria.

"Alright...you just sit tight." said Ms. Yvette.."We'll see you later." she said..

Lt. Tragg watched as we exited...

"You can't help her...I've got a solid case against her..." he said. 

 "Heard it all before." said Yvette...

"You have a great day Lieutenant." I said.

"Byeeeeeeeee." said Beatrice...

"Byeeee, have a great day..."said Sofia.

"Give my regards to Judge Mercer." said Kahlil..

Jade laughed as we left central booking...

And Miles Away at Los Angelas international Airport....Attorney William Lemann was taking a desperate phone call..

"George...George...Georgie...There is no need to get loud...I'm at the airport as we speak....I'm taking the Red Eye into Philly....I heard about the unfortunate corcumstances regarding my partner... I'll be in Philly in four hours...."said Attorney William Lemann...."My interview was a success, filming on my book begins in two weeks...Hopefully I'll have you out of this trouble by then so I can get out here.." said William Lemann..

"ARE YOU CRAZY? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND MAN?  THE  FIRST HEARING IS TOMORROW...TOMORROW MANNNN AND WE HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN OVER THE PARTICULARS.....YOUR PARTNER WAS GOING OVER THEM WHEN HE GOT HIMSELF MURDERED , ALLEDGEDLY BY YOUR SEXY PARA-LEGAL....THERE IS NO ONE IN YOUR OFFICE...MY BUTT IS IN A SLING...I NEED YOU HERE MANNN, I NEED YOU!!!"yelled an irate George Barnes...

"Now Now Now George....There is no need to be loud and upset... I'll be in Philly in  FOUR TO FIVE HOURS..and tomorrow morning...I'll meet you in court..."said William Lemann calmly... "Guess who is in the airport right now? Beyonce and Jay-Z.....Oh My godddd!" said Attorney William Lemann, "Look I gotta go...Photo Op.." he said and hung up..

Our former client was livid.....

II-

And in our office..

"Let me get this straight....Didn't you fire us?" said Virginia.

"I know, I know...but uh I'm not satisfied with Mr. Lemann...I made a mistake." said George Barnes, our former client.

''Well unfortunately for you...they can't help you...You're a week late. They are ironically enough defending Ms. Gloria Rubenstein, the young Para-legal who has been accused of murdering Mr. Curtis, your attorney's partner...Where is Mr. Lemann anyway?" asked Virgnia.

"He's on his way to Philly now...from L.A.  He's been out there all week working on the filming of his book for a made for TV movie..talking to producers ,directors ,screenwriters and Hollywood types...I spoke to him by phone recently...He was in the airport on his way here...I expect him here in the afternoon."said George Barnes..

''Well there you have it...He'll be back...when is your first hearing?" asked Virginia.

"Tomorrow Morning, Courtroom D at 9:00 AM." said George Barnes...

Virginia got a strange look on her face.  "Oh My" she said.  Having been an attorney herself once...She knew about preparation and getting enough sleep the night before.. If Mr. Lemann has been in Los Angelas all week long and now his assistant was dead and his para-legal in jail...He had absolutely no back up..no time for preparation.. and possibly would have jet lag...  "You are in a precarious position."she said..

''So you see...I need help...I need you.." said George Barnes..

"I'm sorry....We can't help you....We are involved in another case....I can give you the name of some other attorneys who might help you.."said Virginia.

"No..No..Nooooo I don't have time to get another group immersed in my case....I guess I'll just have to go with Mr. Lemann and trust he knows what he is doing." said George Barnes , who dejectedly left the office.

That night on the train ride home, Ms. Yvette laughed long and hard at the tale Ms. Virginia told her..

"I don't believe it...He had the nerve to crawl his slimy behind back to our office?" asked Ms. Yvette..

"Yeah, he was desperate...I almost felt sorry for him...He said Lemann has been in Los Angelas all last week, you know , talking to Producers, Directors, Screenwriters and such on his book being made into a made for TV movie...and with Mr. Curtis dead and Gloria in jail..There is no one at that firm who can look after his case...He wanted to fire Lemann and rehire you guys.."said Ms. Virginia.

 

 "Just by the way he did us....I wouldn't work for him again...I'm done with with him period.  By the way...When is his first hearing?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"Tomorrow Morning, Courtroom D.....9:00 AM." said Ms. Virginia.

"TOMORROW????9:00 AM.Why he hasn't had time to prepare ,to make himself familiar with the particulars of the case."I said, astounded..

"Not to mention the notes we sent his partner ,which he doesn't even know about."said Bee Bee.

"I doubt if he's going by the office with no one there."said Sofia.

"And Gloria is locked up...She can't even give him a heads up..."said Kahlil..

"Add to that, he's returning from a FOUR TO FIVE HOUR Plane flight from L.A. He's bound to be famished and tired...That's a little too much." said Jade.

"That's what I was thinking...George is really in a pickle."said Virginia.

 "Let's see if he really is the super lawyer he braggs about being!"laughed Jetty...

"Jazzy, thank you and Kayla for being charactor witnesses for us...I'll pick you up after work tomorrow after noon...Didn't even know you knew Gloria." said Yvette.

"It's a small world..She did process service for me and Kayla when she was in law school..."said Jazzy.
 

"Yeah, me too!"said Her husband, Dabnis, who was not named as a charactor witness.

"I'm glad to hear she graduated from law school..."said Kayla.

"If you guys get her off in time...She'll be ready to take the bar with my man Paris here.."said Ray...

"I hope you can get her off in time.." said Jessica.

"Once again, Lt. Tragg makes a hasty arrest and jeopardizes someone else's life."said her husband, Chip.

"I know.....While being with Judge Mercer has  changed somethings about him...It hasn't changed everything." said Karen.

"I know right?" laughed Natalie , who was sitting on her husband's lap on the train with her arms around him...

David was as content as can be ...

with his wife's lipstick all over his collar....

"You guys got an 8:00 pm appointment tomorrow night?   Good Luck!" said Brooke.

"I wish we had a Night Court in the Federal System...We could flush out a lot more of our cases." said Sean.

"I know what you mean." said Zoey...

Lem smiled....He was glad to be working with these people in the same building every day....Happier still to be getting three hot meals everyday in their building's modern cafeteria.

"Ummmmm you feel good!" said a weary Renee to her husband, Tyrell, Like Natalie, she was sitting on her husband's lap on the train with her arms around him...

And like David, Tyrell had his wife's lipstick all over his collar...

It was obvious what they were going to do once they got home..

Tony, like Paris hadn't bothered to eat dinner in their building..They were having dinner at Olivia's tonight and Paris was going to study some more for the bar.

Paris stared out the window as the train headed for their station...

Nightfall...It had been quite a day... 

We were all at home...

"Good Morning......"Good Morning Jurors and Attorneys....I am Judge Kelly Mercer..Many of you don't know me.....I am new to the Philadelphia area.Welcome to my courtroom....Due to courtroom crowding of cases , we are going to bypass a preliminary hearing...We know that a crime, a henious crime has been committed so we are going to go straight to trial.. I expect, some of you are tired of hearing this...but it is what it is..We are  trying to wind down our case load.. We will have Jury selection today.. Trial could begin tomorrow morning if we seat a jury today.." said Judge Mercer... "We will start today with introductions.." she said.

"Representing the People, Assistant District Attorney Michelle Barnes your honor..." said Michelle Barnes.. She had fought a very difficult battle against us that ended in a hung jury...She was kind of relieved not to be facing us again...we had been very well prepared and came very close to winning that case...The Jury had broke..7 to acquit, 3 to convict and 2 undecided......

George Barnes stood alone...He shook his head....He stomped his foot.. William Lemann was absent...Where was  he? he thought?

COURTROOM D- 10:00 am TUESDAY MORNING....

Attorney William Lemann walked into the courtroom...He was an hour late....

''Attorney William Lemann for the defense....I am sorry I am late, your honor, I overslept...I am asking for a continuance...I was in California all last week and I didn't have time to prepare properly, plus as you know...my assistant attorney was murdered and my other assistant is on trial for his murder."he said.

"You could have called me last week..You come into my courtroom an hour late..unprepared and you ask for a continuance....Absolutely not!!! I'm going to do you a favor though...We will not have jury selection today...That will be tomorrow...and I'll push the trial a day after that, making it start on Thursday Morning...So you prepare for trial and you be here on time and ready for trial...Any more tardiness and unpreparedness and I will hold you in contempt." she said..

TUESDAY NIGHT- 7:30 PM-Courthouse waiting area

 

 

NIGHT COURT- COURTROOM D- 8:00 pm.

In Philadelphia, Night Court only operates two nights a week....Tuesday and Thursday, Tonight was Tuesday...and fortunately...We got an arraignment time of 8:00 pm. 

The Judge in this case would not be the Judge in the actual case....

Lt. Tragg was not there... Night court was too low profile for him...No witnesses...No media..and a bunch of  Judges  and ADA's who were mostly older Judges and ADA's about to retire...It was lightweight. It was in session from 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays...We were quite fortunate to get a date.

The ADA that did show up was not going to be the ADA that tried the case...He had only the basic out line of the case at hand... He basically wanted to go home...So he didn't really put up much of a fight.

We presented 16 charactor witnesses , all from the courthouse.

I interviewed the first four charactor witnesses....

Bee Bee interviewed the next four witnesses with her fourth witness being our friend and Neighbor, Kayla Bennett-St. Jacques, who had worked with Gloria and knew her quite well.

Sofia  interviewed the next four witnesses with her fourth witness being our friend and Neighbor, Jasmine Coley "Jazzy", who had also worked with Gloria and knew her quite well.

Kahlil  interviewed the next four witnesses with his fourth witness being our friend and Neighbor, Jessica Sanchez-Burrows, who had also worked with Gloria and knew her quite well.

Yvette argued eloquently that our client, who had just graduated from law school and hoped to be an officer of the court one day had never been in a bit of trouble and was not a flight risk and looked forward to her day in court to fight these charges....

The Judge released Gloria on her own recognizance without bail.....

Our Bail Bondsman smiled and left for the night... All of us left the courtroom a little after 9:00 at Night.

As promised Ms. Yvette treated us all to dinner...

We went to Mabel Jenkins Soul Food Joint...

"I haven't been in here in so long...I forgot how good the food is.." said Yvette...

"It smells good...I'm Jewish...but I enjoy good Soul Food..."said Gloria...glad to be free and glad to be getting a good hot meal...

"We were glad to be able to help you."said Kayla.

''We heard you had graduated from law school recently...We were so Happy for you.."said Jazzy.

"Yes...We remember how much you helped us when you were a student.." said Jessica.

Several plates of food came out...

 

 ''Everyone keep your wallets in your purses or trousers...I'm paying for everyone's meal tonight."said Yvette.

"Gee Thanks.." I said.

"Awwwww thank you Ms. Yvette." said Bee Bee..

"Gracias." said Sofia.

"Thank you." said  Kahlil.

"Thank you."said Jade.

"Yvette you're an angel." said Jazzy..

"I'm definitely hitting the gym and the spa this coming weekend.." said Kayla.

"You and me both girl.."said Gloria.

"I'll be in the gym too, working hard."said Jessica.

"Oh You Girls look fabulous." said Gloria.

"Gloria this is a Portal....You'll get daily updates on what we are doing as far as your defense goes.."said Sofia ,passing it to her.

"This is a burner phone..Write this number down..Don't forget it..If you need to contact us...Don't call our business phones or our personal phone.." said Bee Bee.

"You call us  from this number..It can't be traced."said Kahlil.

"You guys don't play do you?" said Gloria.

"That's why we win cases.." I said.

"Do you have someone you can stay with?   I'm going to take, Keith ,Bee Bee, Sofia ,Kahlil, Jazzy , Kayla and Jessica home... After that...Jade and I are going to your condo....You will pack an overnight bag with enough clothes to last a week or more.....We'll take you to a hotel or to a friend's house." said Ms. Yvette. 

After Ms. Yvette and Jade dropped us all off at our homes...

They went to Gloria's house and took her to a hotel just a few blocks from where we worked...

It had been a successful night.

IV-

At the loft of Judge Kelly Ann Mercer.....

"OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU He made me soooo mad...." said Judge Kelly Ann Mercer, telling Lt. Tragg about her day in court...with celebrity attorney William Lemann.

"Lemann, the so called "Celebrity Attorney.." he won that big Blakemore Case a few years back...and he can't stop  talking about it...Wrote a book...the book is being made into a movie..and he's been on television a half dozen times." said Lt. Tragg.

"That's him... Did you know he's lost his last three cases...They're all on appeal..The cases his firm won were won by the now late Richard Curtis and the young lady accused of murdering him..."said Kelly Ann.

"That's my case....I arrested her..charged her with murder...

She just finished law school, she was banging the assistant....At any rate, she's being defended by Yvette Jones and her snot nosed youngins." said Lt. Tragg..

 

 

Speaking of us.

"Arthur are you sure she's guilty of this?  And why do you speak of Yvette Jones-Lockwood and her associates like that? I've had them in my courtroom and they seem like lovely people...Funny thing, they were defending Leman's client...George Barnes originally...

They got a hung jury, 7 to acquit, 3 to convict and 2 undecided.. You'd think he would have stayed with them, they almost won that case. but he fired them and replaced them with Lemann.....Well, Lemann has been in California all last week, his assistant has been murdered and his other assistant is on trial for his murder.. Mr. Celebrity walks into my courtroom an hour late and has the nerve to ask for another continuance..OUUUUUUUUU I wanted to strangle him.." she said.

"Come here.." said Lt. Tragg softly...He pulled her to him.....He was tired of talking about work....

She leaned her head on his chest...

"What do you want? Why do I ask? I know what you want....you always want it..." she sighed.

He kissed her passionately....

"Arthuuuuurr" she cooed.

"Yesssssss?" he answered..

"Wanna play cops and judges?" she asked silently.

"VA VA VA VOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!" he replied.
