Work and Play

 

We drove into the parking lot of the Men's Correctional Center...

We parked the car in the prison's parking lot and walked toward the prison...

Our old nemesis ,William "Bull" Bailey was as usual standing there to check us in..

Nelson and I were checked out first...We had food trays with a catered breakfast and a catered soul food buffet courtesy of Mabel Jenkins's Soul Food Restaurant...

and three thermos's of Hot Coffee....

Bull Bailey was perplexed...He wondered who our V.I.P. Guest was...

He saw the man's three daughters, Mabel, Corabeth and Anita Jenkins...

and his voluptuous wife,Lani Jenkins...and he guessed that accused double murderer Willie Jenkins was the guest...

 He saw Olivia Bennett-Alexander , flanked by her niece Beverly West-East and her other two associates, Attorneys Josie Boyd and Bresha Billips...and knew who his attorneys were...He sighed///

Within ten minutes...Sweet Dick Jenkins was brought into the room...He smelled the good food and coffee and saw all of us and broke into a big smile.

"LAWD JESUS...LOOK AT THIS!" he said...eyeing all of the good food...

"Daddy!" exclaimed his daughters, Mabel, Corabeth and Anita, hugging him and kissing him...

"Sweet Dick...I've missed you so much...I was gettin ready to return to New Orleans....You didn't have to come up here..." said his wife, Lani..

"Come here girl." he said..

They kissed passionately...

oblivious to the fact that we were all standing there....

"Okay daddy let's sit down and eat all this good food and coffee here...Your lawyers are going to go over some things with you..."said Lani..

"Liv, you said you all had my back, you wasn't lying...Thank you, thank you so much." said Sweet Dick who sat down to the table and began to eat and enjoy the food.. 

"I told you we have your back..We are going to spend the day with you..Going over your case."said Olivia.

 

"Bev and I found 25 witnesses, guys who played in that card game with you..Barmaids and so forth who say that you never came into contact with those two...That's a start.." I said.,

"We surveyed that alley and we looked at street cam footage...The shots came from the alley right by their car and the killer, whoever it was ,tossed the gun into your back seat...Next time ,roll all of your windows up."said Beverly with a smile.

"The Killer sat in wait for them...He or she had perfect cover, in the dark, away from the street cam and fired four shots...into their car as they got in...both men got hit in the back of the head...They never saw it coming...They didn't have time to react." said Nelson.

Josie pulled out case files...involving like cases, like capital cases, Predicates and general laws...They were going to go over all of this today..

She set up her laptop....

Bresha had the crime scene photos and the autopsy report on the two men as well as the official crime scene report.

She too set up a laptop.

Sweet Dick looked at us and beamed with gratitude... He had some good lawyers, he thought.

II-

ONE WEEK LATER-

We had been up to the prison with food and Mable, Anita and Corabeth Jenkins went with us three seperate times..

Lani went with us too, two of the three times....We spent those days going over Sweet Dick's case with him...He enjoyed the visits and the food..

This was a Saturday Night and I had invited the whole gang out to a hip new Carribean Restaurant for dinner...

"I'm glad you all agreed to come out....I've wanted you all to check this restaurant out for a long time.."I said. 

"If you're recommending it..We are there Donnie Ray."laughed Jazzy.
 

"For someone who is not a native born Philadelphian, you know the best places to eat."said Dabnis.

"I knowwwwww." said Kayla.

"That's what I've always said ever since we first met him." said Beverly..

"You guys have really been working hard on this Sweet Dick Jenkins case... It's in the newspapers now." said Ray, Kayla's husband.

"I'd feel better if he wasn't locked up...but I hear he's somewhat of a hero to the inmates there..It seems nobody liked those two guys he's accused of killing ,Vic Delong and Carlo Ruffin." said Olivia.

"I repped Carlo Ruffin once when I was a Public Defender...He's scum...Not much on brains...basically a follower...A leg breaker for whoever is paying.. It just turns out Vic Delong was paying this time."said Jessica.

"I heard Vic Delong's money ran long...He had a long line of credit extended on the street." said Chip.

Funny the things Attorneys know about certain people.

"I prosecuted Vic Delong once. None of the witnesses against him showed up and the one that did changed his story....I lost the case...Had to drop the charges...Such was the fear of Vic Delong..."said Karen.

"Somebody wasn't afraid of him!"said B.L.

"Fear can do a lot of things....Maybe fear and desperation drove somebody to shoot them both.."said Natalie.

"Yeah...obviously..."agreed her husband, David.

''A lot of people are probably sighing relief..Relief that they don't have to pay anymore money to him." said Brooke.

"Or suffer a beating from Carlo."said Sean.

"I heard nobody has claimed either body."said Zoey...

"Looks like our boys are pretty popular." said Lem.

"Maybe instead of locking Sweet Dick up, they should be giving him a medal."joked Renee.

"He didn't do it...but whoever did it is a hero in my book."said her husband Tyrell.

The Food arrived.

 

 "OUUUUUUUUUUUUUU THIS LOOKS SOOO GOOD!" said Yvette.

"Smells Good too!"said her husband, Gary...

"Awwww man, let me get a plate and start serving  up."said Keith Jones.

"Ummmmmmmm this looks and smells delish." said Bee Bee.

"Aye Mios dios.I know.."said Sofia.

"Another Home run for Donnie Ray..

"Poor Sweet Dick...I know he'd be loving this ,if he was out.."said Nelson..

"Ouuuu I know." said Josie.

"Ummmmmmmmmmm he would.....I'm going to enjoy it for him." said Bresha, laughing..

"Yeah me too!"laughed her husband, Tony....

"Don't Worry, you guys will get him off and you can bring him here...It'll give us a reason to come back."said Jade.

"Yeah think positively. Donnie Ray, you might want to check that gun and see if any other DNA or partial prints are on it." said her husband, Danny.

"I've thought of that...I'm going to check tomorrow." I said.  I already knew that Sweet Dick's prints were not found on the murder weapon at all...Nor his DNA...but somebody's DNA might be on the gun.

"Ummmmmmmm everything looks and smells delish." said  Virginia.

"Yes it does ."agreed her husband, Jetty.

More Food Arrived. 

"Oh I'll sleep good tonight." laughed Olivia.

 

"I think we all will." I said.. "We needed a break after going up to the jailhouse and spending our days working on this case." I said.

"We are just about ready to go to trial..." said Beverly.

''Almost...I need Monday to work on picking jurors." said Nelson.

''Well we are here now...Let's concentrate on this good food and the good fellowship with our friends." said Josie, smiling.

"Yeah good idea."said her husband Paris, quaffing a cold beer..

Bresha was sipping Ice Tea and enjoying her food..

as was her husband, Tony...

Alfreda was enjoying her food...

As was her husband, Rockland..

Our drinks were divided between beers and Ice Tea.

Also dining out on this Saturday Afternoon was Lt. Tragg and his girlfriend, Judge Kelly Ann Mercer.

"Oh Look, there is Olivia , Yvette and their friends.."said Judge Kelly Ann, smiling.

"Crimminy, I can't get away from them.." said Lt. Tragg, peering across the restaurant at us eating and laughing and talking and drinking.

"Can you believe they're here?" said Beverly, who spied them...

"The Power of The PAN-TAYS!" laughed Natalie..

"A Hot Date for him used to be Curleys and then a quick trip to either her place or her apartment..

With this woman....He takes her on actual dates to nice restaurants...He spends some serious cash."said Kayla.

"What did I tell you?  If he wants to keep getting into those panties...He's going to overachieve by taking her out to nice places like this...I just wish he wouldn't do it on nights when we all are out." said Jazzy...

These comments brought all of us to loud laughter- We continued to eat and drink and enjoy ourselves for the next TWO HOURS

 "You said it girl...The Power of the Panties."laughed Yvette.

"I don't want to spend all night talking about them."said Gary.

"Me neither."laughed Keith Jones.

"But it would be nice if we could go out and not have to run into him.."said Bee Bee.

"I know right?" said Sofia.

"It could be worse...He's not bothering us."said Kahlil.

"This is true." said Jade.

"Pass me a beer."said Danny.

"Ummmmmmmmm, I'm full."said Virginia.

"Ouuuuuu so am I." said Jetty. 

"I'm just glad everybody is enjoying themselves."said Olivia.

 

"The Food was delicious...I'll have to rep[ort back to my friend.." said Donnie Ray.

"I hope your friend has some more good restaurants we can go to." said Beverly...

"Yeah , this place is aces in my book."said Nelson, smiling and rubbing his belly...

"You're satisfied tonight."laughed Josie...who looked at her husband.."You too." she said, smiling.

"I sure am." laughed Paris.

"One thing about this group...We eat well."laughed Bresha,.

"We do don't we?" laughed her husband, Tony.

"I know I'm going to sleep well on the bus ride home." said Alfreda.

"Yeah , me too!"said Rockland. 

"Ouuuuuuuu everything was delicious!" said Jazzy.
 

"I'm full, I can't eat or drink another thing." said Dabnis.

"That makes two of us." said Kayla.

"How bout you Jessie?" asked Ray..

"Aye Mios Dios." said Jessica.

Her husband Ray rubbed her belly softly...

"I'm going to the ladies room and we can leave when I get back." said Karen...

"The Buses might already be here by now."said B.L. softly.

"I really enjoyed myself tonight."said Natalie.

"I did too!" said David.

"Thank You Donnie Ray." said Brooke.

"Yeah Thank You." said Sean.

"You're all welcome." I said, smiling.

Zoey and Renee came from the ladies room-

"The Buses are outside." she said.

"Let me pay our bill and I'll join you." said her husband, Lem.

"Ready to go Hubby?" asked Renee.

"Lead the way Darlin." said her husband, Tyrell.

It was a very nice mellow night for everyone involved. A Good time was had by all.

III-

A Nice Night in Mid Winter....

We all went home after a nice night out...It was nice to be in our warm homes.......

Olivia didn't say anything...She smiled at me.... She left the bedroom and went into the bathroom

and the Crime scene report...

Olivia and Nelson were also in the law library, carving out a defense strategy and opening argument...

looking at Witness Statements and Crime scene photos....

I was at the Medical Examiner's Office talking to Doc Gibbons.

"Lt. Tragg is the dumbest jackass I've ever seen on the police force....I don't know how he made detective....I don't know how he graduated from the academy....He's arrested a man , he has a murder weapon , none of the man's prints or DNA is on the murder weapon, but there is someone else's DNA on the gun...Hazel, Dr. Baylor tried to get him over here to tell him and to date, he hasn't shown up yet." said Doc Gibbons.

"Here's the Jackpot question...Who's DNA and partial print is on the gun?" I asked.

''We don't know...Whoever it is, doesn't have a record here in town....but they might have a record somewhere else...I suggest you take this sample to Sissy Van Buren and the detectives of the Criminal Investigation Division. and the FBI. They'll maked a connection." said Doc Gibbons.

"That's a good idea Doc." I said.
