Big Pregnant And In Trouble

 COURTROOM A-

"Has the jury come to a decision?"asked Judge King...

"We have your honor."said the Jury Foreman, passing the envelope to the bailiff..

The Judge read the decision and without making a single facial expression, passed it to the bailiff.

"Read it!" he said.

Newly minted attorney, Lee Phillips stood with her client...She was very nervous.

Her client, a young African American woman named Melody Harper accused of murder, but without proper resources who had been refferred to the womens law center held each other tight.

"WE THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA IN THE MATTER OF PENNSYLVANIA VS

MELODY HARPER ON COUNT ONE, MANSLAUGHTER, WE FIND THE DEFENDENT NOT GUILTY!

COUNT TWO, SECOND DEGREE MURDER, WE FIND THE DEFENDENT, NOT GUILTY!!

COUNT THREE, FIRST DEGREE MURDER, WE FIND THE DEFENDENT, NOT GUILTY!!

AND COUNT FOUR, USE OF AN INSTRUMENT OF CRIME WHILE IN COMNMISSION OF A FELONY, NOT GUILTY!" he said.

"That said I'd like to thank the jury for their due dilligence and their attention to their duties...You are dismissed...Your checks will be mailed to you...Ms.Harper you are free to go." he said.

"OUUUUUUUUUUUU THANK YOU SOOO MUCH GIRL!" said Melody, hugging Lee and in tears...

"You're so welcome!" said Lee.. It was her 10th straight courtroom victory and her first murder trial...

She was quite pleased with herself. She was even more pleased to see us waiting for her in the visitors section- 

"Come here baby girl...We are sooo proud of you."said Olivia, hugging her...

 

"We were sorry we missed your other court appearences...but this was a big one, a murder case." I said, also hugging her.

"I knew you were going to be fierce as an attorney." said Beverly, hugging her and kissing her on the cheek.

"You handled yourself like a pro...but then again...You are a pro."laughed Nelson..

"I learned from the best."laughed Lee.

"I'm so happy for you." said Josie...

"That was a tough case, but you toughed it out.." said  Bresha.

"Yeah and you won. So Proud of you baby!" said Alfreda.

Assistant District Attorney Jason Kyle had lost his second case in a row...Normally he would be upset..but he knew he'd be interviewing for another job later on today....he quickly gathered his things and left the courthouse....

Her boyfriend, Attorney Matthew Akes was there...

"Congratulations Baby!" he said 

Lee was happy to see him....Matthew was obsessed with her.. He was over her apartment almost every night...She loved the attention...

They kissed..

They kissed for what seemed like forever...

"Hey you two, come up for air...We are all going to lunch at the Bridge Building...All of our friends are going to want to celebrate with you two.."laughed Olivia.

Beverly took an antiseptic wipe out of her purse and wiped Lee's Lipstick smudge off of Matthew's face and his lapel. She smiled at him....

Matthew smiled sheepishly...

The First Blossums or Spring were blooming at Penns Landing.

We entered the Bridge Building...

We were just in time for lunch. 

"Hey Everybody...Our little lady here won her first Murder trial."said Olivia..

Lee beamed with pride and humility...

Matthew smiled broadly...

 

"We got another "Killer" amongst us." I said.

"Umm what's good today?"asked Beverly looking around..

"Everything looks and smells good." said Nelson.

"Ummmmm it does." said Josie.

"This place makes a killing off of all of us." said Paris, glad to see his wife,.

"It's certainly worth it."said Bresha.

"I'm glad to see you baby." said Tony to his wife.

"Here comes the rest of the gang." said Alfreda.

"Vettie you would have been proud of our girl, So poised, So laser sharp....She won her case...Her first Murder case." said Olivia. 

 "So proud of you..."said Yvette, hugging Lee and rocking her back and forth...

"Like I told Olivia...I learned from the best, You two." said Lee....

"You did didn't you?" said Keith Jones...

"Oh hush up...Proud of you sweetie."said Bee Bee.

"That's number 10 huh? Your first Murder case.Proud of you!"said Sofia..

Kahlil hugged her...He loved the feel of her curvaceous body!

"Congratulations Lee."said Jade, hugging her.

"You're on your way now baby!"said Virginia.

"Congrats!"said her husband, Jetty...

"I know you're hungry...Come on sit down, both of you..." said Dabnis to Lee and Matthew.

"Girrrrrl what are you doing to Poor Matthew? You've got him so whipped he doesn't know if he's coming or going..."laughed Kayla to Lee.

Lee smiled a conspiratorial smile but said nothing.. She softly rubbed Matthew's leg...Stroking his growing erection under the table..

"Oh My God!! Calm yourself down.." she said, smiling wickedly....

Matthew smiled sheepishly..

"I wish I could..." he whispered...

"You guys got enough room?" asked Ray diplomatically...

"So Happy for you and Proud of you...but I'm not surprised by your success."said Jessica Sanchez-Burrows.

"Ya done good young lady."said her husband, Chip.

"We are just happy we all played a part in your success."said Karen...

"Your first two drinks are on me Friday Night at NO I.D.Bar." said Natalie.

''And Saturday Night we'll all be at Josie's."said David.

"They are having a band and a comedian." said Brooke.

"I hope it's not that comedian that they had last year..." said Sean.

"Oh I know who you're talking about...I don't think she's allowed in Josie's."laughed Zoey.

Her husband Lem cracked up...

"I hope not...She was terrible!"laughed Lem.

"Hey Lee, you and I are supposed to go dress shopping tomorrow after work..Don't forget." said Renee.

"Oh I won't..." said Lee.

"Wow..she really has mixed in with us totally."laughed Tyrell.

A Beautiful Spring day...Little did we know...The "Fun" was just about to begin.

II-

At this moment at the Headquarters of the Harris Group,,,

"You guys have made a big mistake...I'm going to sue the hell out of this firm.."said Attorney Lloyd Connor ,who had just been fired...

"You should be glad you're not being disbarred....Now GET OUT!" said Senior Partner Ken McClurken...

"Mr.McClurkin...I'm Jason Kyle....I'm here about the position you advertised..." said Jason Kyle.

"Oh Yes, you're currently an Assistant District Attorney....Sheila...Take him to Mr. Connor's old office....I'll be right down to talk to you." said McClurkin.

"You Bastard,,,,You posted my position awhile ago...This was all in the works..." said an astonished Lloyd Connor...

"Yes, once our investigation was complete and we discovered what you were doing, the higher ups decided you had to go...We were just waiting for the right moment, when all of the evidence was in..."said Ken McClurkin.

"You treacherous weasel.....All of you...You guys have made a big mistake...Just wait...I'm going to sue the hell out of this firm.."said Attorney Lloyd Connor. 

"As I have said...You should be glad you're not being disbarred....Now GET OUT!" said Senior Partner Ken McClurken...

Some Miles away at THE WOMEN'S LAW CENTER!

THE OFFICE OF ATTORNEY LEE PHILLIPS, ESQ.

Lee looked at the title on her office door and her desk...She smiled....She was soo happy and so proud of herself...Mission accomplished she thought....After her pregnancy and miscarriage...Her life seemed to be in freefall....Then she got herself together, moved back to Philadelphia, got herself a clerks job at The Women's Law Center, got her credits transferred to Drexel and re-entered law school...

Her friend and supervisor, Nina Rios, a one time Assistant District Attorney got her contacts  with her lawyer  friends in the Bridge Building... Attorneys she had known for years...

Lee met with and interned under these great attorneys...becoming friends with these people and learning a lot..

 

 

 

Meeting famed lawyers, Olivia Bennett-Alexander, her niece Beverly West and their team and working a few cases with them..

 

The beautiful thing was that all of these people lived within walking distance of her new found apartment..

And now, she socialized with them on a regular.... 

Yes she had done well...gaining new friends and associates and learning a lot...

She sat back in her office and took a deep breath....It wasn't to be held too long.

A woman walked into her office unannounced...

"I need your help please.!...I need HELP!" she said sobbing...

"Well wait a minute...Who are you??, What is your problem?" asked Lee.

"My Name is Jennifer, Jennifer Grant...I am Big Pregnant and in trouble....I need a divorce from my husband, right away...He is abusive....Can you get me a divorce tonight??...I am in my ninth month...I am about to deliver our baby..."  said Jennifer Grant.

"Has your husband hit you or physically abused you in any way?" asked Lee.

"No never, but the entire time we were together he has abused me verbally, He has put me down, said I was only good for sex... He has forced me to have sex when I didn't want to...I told him I was going to leave him and I tried to leave him several times...but he always found me ,always brought me back...I believe he did something to my birth control, which is how I got pregnant.... I need a safe haven from him...Please help me." she said.

Lee felt for her...

"I suppose you can't go to a shelter.." she said.

"I can not...He's been to all of them looking for me...and he has terrorized them all so much that they released me to him...I need to be put somewhere where he won't find me." she sobbed.

"Give me your phone...turn it off and disbable your GPS...Did you come here in a car?" she asked.

"I don't have a car....only he does.." she sobbed.

''Okay,Okay...."said Lee...She pulled her shades....Then she made a desperate phone call....

TWO HOURS LATER-

We drove up to the back alley of  The Women's Law Center-

Lee hustled Jennifer down the back steps....

"Thank you so much..."said Jennifer..

"Olivia, Beverly ,I am so in your debt..." said Lee.. 

"We were only too happy to help you, especially when you told us of your situation.."said Olivia..

 

"Come on Miss, get in the back with Josie and Bresha..."You'll be safe with us." I said.

"Thank you so much...Thank you so much..." said Jennifer...

"Is your phone off? Is your GPS disabled?" asked Beverly.

''Yes , Yes it is.." she said.

''We are going to lock it in our safe...." said Nelson.

"Let's get you home and safe..."said Josie.

"Yes." said Bresha.

"Thank you so much." said Jennifer.

"When I get off work I'm going to come and see you..." said Lee.

"Okay and thank you again.." said Jennifer.

We pulled off and headed home.

III-

We brought Jennifer to our Duplex....This was a part of town she had never been in before...She was amazed at all of the new houses, apartment complexes, lofts and condos in the area...We drove her around, showing her the shopping centers, clubs , restaurants and what have you...She was amazed..

This was like another country to her!

We then took her to our Duplex where she had dinner with us... There she unburdened herself to us..

"I'm desperate....I am Big Pregnant and in trouble....I need a divorce from my husband, right away...He is abusive..Not physically abusive, but the threat was always there...We've only been married two years...The worst two years of my life...He's very manipulative and domineering...the entire time we were together he has abused me verbally, He has put me down, said I was only good for sex... He has forced me to have sex when I didn't want to...I told him I was going to leave him and I tried to leave him several times...but he always found me ,always brought me back...I believe he did something to my birth control, which is how I got pregnant.... I need a safe haven from him...Every time I left him and went to a shelter...He found me and he terrorized the people running the shelter to the point of them having no choice but to let me go back to him...This time I just had to get away...I left my clothes, I left everything...I just had to go...." she said, sobbing. 

"It's okay...You're safe here with us..We have an apartment in the basement..My Niece and her husband will get you some bedspreads and sheets..."said Olivia.

 

"Does your husband work?" I asked.

"Yes he does...He works in Cherry Hill.." said Jennifer.

"Nelson and I will get a uhaul truck...Take you by there tomorrow after he leaves and get your things.."I said."You still have a key don't you?" I asked.

"Yes." said Jennifer. "I am so surprised...I've never been in this part of the city before.."said Jennifer.

"None of us had before we moved up here...Auntay and I are originally from West Philly by way of West Oak Lane."said Beverly with a smile.

"I'm from West Philly myself.. This area was nothing but old warehouses and abandoned buildings and empty feilds...Then developers started building homes, condos, lofts, apartments , and people started opening clubs and restaurants and shopping centers...and soon this was boom town...

"My cousin and her husband moved across the street and soon my three best girlfriends and their husbands moved across the street, Josie and her husband and Bree and her husband,My Mom and her husband and Auntay's closest friends from law school all moved in and some of our other friends all moved around here and we have a nice tight little community... This is kind of like the place to live." said Beverly.

"This seems like a very peaceful community to live in...Lord knows I need peace."said Jennifer.

"I know Lee explained to you that we can't get a divorce that quickly..There is a process.."said Josie.

"It starts with a restraining order..Have you ever filed a restraining order or called the police on your husband.?" asked Paris.

"No!" said Jennifer.

"Well there is no better time than the present.We'll get to working on that tomorrow."said Bresha.

"We got you." said her husband, Tony....

"Hey you all...This is Lee's case." said Alfreda ,smiling.

Rockland smiled-"Case #11 huh?" he said, rubbing her shoulders..

 "You all said what I already told her...I've already got papers started toward the Restraining Order...

I'll be by here tomorrow night." said Lee.

"You know you are always welcome...and we are here to aid you in whatever way we can..."said Olivia.

"Thank you so much." said Lee.

"You guys are the best." said her boyfriend, Matthew...an attorney himself..

Nightfall came...

 

We took Jennifer down to our basement apartment....

"Here are clean bedspreads ,pillowcases and sheets..."said Beverly..

"Oh thank you...This is sooo nice.."said Jennifer.

"That TV streams and has cable stations... There is a chest of drawers for your clothes when we get them to you...and a closet...Over there is the bathroom and a shower...and here are some clean towels and wash cloths."said Olivia.

"You are are so kind....."said Jennifer...

"We all need a little help sometimes..."said Olivia.

And at Lee's apartment...

"This law game is something eh?   I know you're exhausted."said Matthew.

"A Good kind of exhausted...Like I make a difference." she said as she cuddled in his arms..

 She softly rubbed Matthew's leg...Stroking his growing erection.

My plan worked like a charm...

Nelson sat outside Jennifer's house and waited for her husband to leave. When he did..He called me..

And He and I and Jennifer grabbed all of her belongings and loaded them on the UHaul and we were off. She left the keys behind..She didn't intend to return..

She went to her bank and closed out her checking and savings account and withdrew all of her money.

She returned to our Duplex and deposited all of her things in our basement..while she stayed in our sub-basement apartment..

At last she felt safe..  She enjoyed our company..Gave us a little money towards groceries and spent her days relaxing and having her meals with us. 

"Jennifer you are due in any day now. We live near a good hospital, we can get you to."said Olivia.

 

"I did a little digging the past few days...I went to all of the shelters...They talked about how demanding and demeaning your husband was and how while he didn't appear to be violent ,he was somewhat of a an annoying pest,...I have at least 25 people , both workers at the shelters and women who were living there who testified on affadavit on your behalf." I said.

"That should go a long way towards your restraining order when Lee argues it." said Beverly.

"Let's just hope she gets a woman Judge." said Nelson.

"What does that matter ? the facts are the facts."said Josie.

"A lot of male judges aren't sympathetic, especially when no previous order has been filed and there is no sign of violence."said Paris.

"He's right.. some of these male judges are quite conservative." said Bresha.

"Yeah Lee, try to get a sympathetic woman judge."said Tony.

"Listen to all this great legal advice young lady."laughed Alfreda.

Rockland laughed.. "They are telling her right." he said.

As promised. Lee and Matthew came by every night with news on her restraining order and how it was coming along.

 

"I've got a court appointment tomorrow..You have to be there with me, So I'm coming to get you..." said Lee..

"I'll be ready." said Jennifer.

"You look like you're ready already....to deliver." said Matthew..

"Oh I hope so..." said Jennifer.
 

While in the offices of the Harris Group downtown...

The corporate office of Senior Partner, Ken McClurkin..

a woman lie on the floor of his office... She had been stabbed....She was very dead...She was a para-legal named Sheila Stevens...She worked closely with Ken McClurkin...
