Smoking Gun

 We had a new coffee shoppe in our neighborhood...one Block from our Office depot.

New Houses were being built and finished....

And a new laundromat that everybody needed....

This morning, we were all sitting in  the newly opened coffee shop with our friend and colleague, Natika Sommers, the head of The Public Defenders Office.

"Olivia, this is great....New Houses, A Coffee Shoppe and a laundromat....The neighborhood has needed that." said Natika. 

"Yes...A new coffee shoppe and a new laundromat and new homes...."said Olivia.

 

"Some of our friends have already put in bids for those homes.."I said.

"Nina and Carlos, who just got married have put down a down payment....As have Lee And Matthew...I'm going to miss going to the apartments and those rooftop parties."said Yvette.

"Zoey and Lem, Brooke and Sean and Natalie and David have put in bids for those homes also."said Nelson.

"That will bring our friends closer to us and five homes open." said Josie.

"I hope whoever inhabits those five empty homes will be nice people."said Bresha.

"I do too...but I like that we have a laundromat and a coffee shoppe.. Kind of like Bookends on the new neighborhood. Said Alfreda.

"I called you here today because I need a favor....I've got a case that came across my desk that I frankly don't think any of my attorneys can handle...but that I think is right up your alley....If you are uh down for doing a pro bono case." said Natika. 

"Well, we've been paid pretty handsomely our last few cases, Leonard Bishop and McCluskey/Cozen/Connor and Pratt lawsuit...Sooooo I suppose we could throw a pro bono case in..What's the case?" asked Olivia.

"Her name is Jean Wallace..."said Natika,pulling out a photo of a pretty girl about Beverly and Josie's age..

She is accused of killing Attorney Walter Simonson. She says that not only did she not kill him him...but that she was never in his apartment and can't remember how she got there."said Natika.

 

"WOW!!!  Were how did she get there?" I asked.

"You won't believe this... The Police got an anonymous call that shots had been fired...When they arrived.. Jean Wallace was lying on the couch clad in only her bra and panties with a .22 caliber  pistol in her hand, hot and smoking....and Walter Simonson on the floor ,face down with two .22 caliber slugs in his chest...She was awakened with no idea how she got there and no idea where her clothes were...They were across the room, neatly folded and on a chair."said Natika.

"Wow, it all seems so open and shut...Too open and shut... She wasn't drinking with this man?" asked Beverly.

"She said she barely knew him...He had asked her out a couple of times ..but she had never taken him up on his offer... She's an administrative assistant at a downtown office..." said Natika.

"Was she drugged?" asked Nelson.

"They did a urinalysis after she was arrested... They found a lot of rohypnol in her urine...She was obviously drugged."said Natika.

"Where was she drinking at that night?" asked Josie.

"Ciros"said Natika.

CIROS BAR!

"Someone tried to roofie me in that bar years ago...." said Olivia. "I never went in there again after that."

"I've been in there...It's Neon Green...The Bar is lit up....but it's a vipers nest." said Bresha.

"Yeah I've been in there." said Alfreda...

We drank our second round of coffees...

"Was she drinking with anybody?" I asked.

"No, she says she was drinking alone..."said Natika.

"This case interests me...Intrigues me...It's such an obvious frame, such a neat fit."said Olivia.

"Too neat. Complete with the Smoking Gun." I said.

''Who is the lead Detective on the case?" asked Beverly.

"Take a guess." said Natika.

"Lt. Arthur Tragg." said Olivia.

"That was a no brainer.."laughed Natika.

"No Brainer is right?" said Beverly.

Olivia laughed.

II-

In the Interrogation Room nicknamed "The Fishbowl" by the Detectives,Lt. Tragg held court.

Murder suspect, Jean Wallace sat across from him.

"Well Little Lady....We've got the murder weapon...This gun passed ballistics...It's got your fingerprints all over it and in was found in your hot little hands.... " he said pointing to the .22 caliber handgun on the table.

"Do you have anything you'd like to say?" he asked and passed her a pen and a sheet of paper for a confession.

"Two things!   One, I did not kill that man and two...LAWYER!" she shouted and ripped the sheet of paper in half...

"That attitude will get you a needle..Now rethink your position."said Lt. Tragg.

" I did not kill that man and two...LAWYER!"snarled Jean Wallace.

"Your legal counsel is here Jean." said Natika.

"You're the lady from the Public Defenders Office I spoke to.....What is Olivia Bennett-Alexander and Beverly West doing here?  I-I can't afford them." said Kim Wallace.

"They're taking this case on as a favor to me..."said Natika. 

"We are doing your case Pro Bono...That means for free."said Olivia with a smile.

 

"You just relax....We are going to try and get you arraigned and get you out of here.." I said.

"We don't believe you killed that man.."said Beverly.

"I DON'T GIVE A MERRY DAMN WHAT YOU GUYS BELIEVE!  I'VE GOT THE MURDER WEAPON RIGHT HERE IN FRONT OF ME ON THIS TABLE...IT PASSED A BALLISTICS TEST AND HER FINGERPRINTS ARE ALL OVER IT...WHEN WE FOUND HER...SHE WAS ON THE COUCH ASLEEP IN HER UNDIES, STILL HOLDING THE SMOKING GUN!! CASE CLOSED!"bellowed Lt. Tragg.

"Don't you wonder who called you and told you about the shooting in the first place? It wasn't her....When you found her, she was sound asleep by the dead body with gun in hand...And you gave her a urinalysis and rhohypnol commonly known as "Roofies "was found in her urine..A Large amount...Doesn't that say Frame Lieutenant??  "asked Nelson calmly..

"You've been watching too many TV shows Junior."said Lt. Tragg.

"Maybe you haven't watched enough!" said Josie.

"She's been around you too long Niecey Poo!"said Olivia, smiling.

"I know Auntay!"said a smiling Beverly.

"Shortcake you wear off on everyone you're around."I said.

"That she does."said Bresha.

Olivia, Beverly and I and Bresha all snickered....

"Good Lieutenant can we have the room please?" asked Olivia sweet and diplomatically..

"Sure" said Lt. Tragg, who walked out and slammed the door.

"It stinks in here..." said Jean Wallace.

"No argument there...They could stand to empty those trash cans and mop this floor."said Olivia.

"Some Febreeze wouldn't hurt."said Beverly.

"It's important you not talk to anybody about the circumstances of your arrest and your case...Not Guards, Not cops or detectives and not other inmates....Everybody is looking to make a deal...You just talk to us...We are going to try and get you out of here...."said Olivia.

"Okay...." said Jean Wallace contritely...

We knew better than to say anything more.. We knew we were being watched and listened to. With what we said, we all gathered our things and left as Jean was formally charged with First degree Murder and led to one of the cells upstairs.

Known to most as "The Cooler."

III-

It was still early...We decided to have Dinner with our friends at the Bridge Building.

We loved their modern cafeteria.

 

 

"Starting the year off right with a fresh new case huh girlfriend?" said Yvette.

"Yeah Lt. Tragg just finished bracing her. We Are taking this case pro bono...It interests me greatly."said Olivia.

"Nice when you make so much money you can take a case Pro Bono." said Keith Jones.

"Hey I know you guys have taken on a Pro Bono case or two."laughed Beverly.

"Yeah we have occassionally taken a pro bono case...but it's been awhile."said Bee Bee.

"The Public Defenders Office throws us one a year."laughed Sofia.

"That's who has thrown us this one." said Nelson.

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I see." said Kahlil.

"From a Cops standpoint it interests me." I said.

"I know what you mean....from time to time...I forget I'm not a homicide detective anymore and just get into a case."said Jade.

"I love being in the thick of legal battles."said Virginia wistfully...

"I love being in the thick of you.." whispered Jetty to Virginia.

"You are sooo horny, all you think about is sex..." laughed Virginia.

Josie and Paris were happy to see each other....

"We got a new case baby!" said Josie.

"Wow you're starting the new year out right."laughed Paris...

"Yes we are...It's a Pro Bono case, but when I tell you about it..You'll see why it is so intriguing to Olivia and all of us.

"I'm sure I will babes." said her husband Tony...

At the next big table behind us-

"I was in your neighborhood today Jazzy....I see they are finishing up new houses in the next block..."said Natika.

"Girrrrrl, they are beautiful....They look just like our houses on our block." said Jazzy...
 

"Yeah and some of our friends have already put in bids for those homes...5 of em I believe." said Dabnis.

"It'll be nice with them living closer to us..." said Kayla.

"Yeah...They'll be able to walk home from Josie's too!"laughed Ray....

"We got a new laundomat too...Which we have needed for a long time." said Jessica.

"Maybe we can still have Laundry Day...."laughed Chip.

"I doubt that we will....because we'll all be doing our laundry anytime we feel the need...and not waiting."said Karen.

"True and they opened up a new coffee shoppe too!" said Natalie.

"Yeah, we can stop and grab coffee before work or stop there after work..."said her husband, David.

"I was there with Olivia and Beverly this morning... Nice Neighborhood, Nice Laundromat at one corner and Nice Coffee Shopp at the other corner." said Natika.  "When do you guys move in?" she asked.

"Natalie and David and Sean and I move in Saturday." said Brooke

"We are all packed...."said Sean...

"Lem and I move in Saturday too." said Zoey....

"Right after we come from Brunch..." said Lem....

"Ouuuuuuu Sunday I'll bring some pastries over from Cakeman Rven's shoppe...as a kind of housewarming present for you all...I'm sooo excited to be neighbors with you all." said Renee.

"When do you guys move in?" Tyrell asked Lee and Matthew.

"In two weeks ,after our wedding." said Lee.

"It's going to be soo nice." said Matthew.

"You'll be next door to us...We move in next Friday..." said Nina.

"Yeah, that's going to be nice." said Carlos.

"I'm going to love this...Neighbors and Friends..." said Olivia.

"But I'm going to miss the Apartments...The rooftop parties.." said Beverly.

"Nobody stays in those apartments long."laughed Virginia, who lived there herself before she married Jetty.

A Nice relaxing afternoon with our friends... We had our work cut out for us starting tomorrow.

IV-

It was a nice peaceful afternoon.

At our Office /Duplex-

"Wow that was a great meal.. They've got a good thing going with that cafeteria in their building.." I said.

For the next NINE TO TEN HOURS....Beverly  and Nelson were in total bliss, their bed getting a nice workout!!!!

Finally resting peacefully, with Beverly ,sleeping like a baby on top of her husband....Both of them snoring loudly....

The next morning we were all having breakfast..

Pancakes with fresh strawberries

Waffles with fresh strawberries...

An Everything Omelette for me...

Hash Browns 

Sausages

Coffee

and fresh squeezed Orange Juice.

"Breakfast is ready kiddies...Dig in...Aint no strangers here!" said Alfreda.. who along with Olivia and I prepared Breakfast every morning.

"Ms. Alfreda, You Donnie Ray and Ms. Olivia spoil us....Hot Breakfast every morning."said Bresha.

"Well fed employees tend to be more productive employees." said Olivia as she made us plates...

I sat down next to her and put my arms around her waist.

"Nelson get us as early court date as you can tonight." said Olivia, talking about Night Court.

"I'm on it....Right after breakfast....I'll head down to the courthouse..."said Nelson..

"Ladies, visit Jean...I forgot to do this yesterday....but we need a list of  charactor witnesses, get as many as you can, Emails, Home Addresses and Phone numbers...The works... We'll need them to appear tonight...That's why I'm trying to get as early a date as possible."said Olivia.

"We are on it Auntay....right after breakfast..."said Beverly...

"Let's take my car.." said Josie.

"I hope we can get a lot...At least 10...The more we get the more impressive..."said Bresha.

I smiled, Olivia had them all trained well...They were a well oiled machine....

Jean Wallace was going to need it and then some to get out of this mess.
