COURTROOM A-

I sat in a courtroom today observing a trial...A Trial I had nothing to do with...A trial I wasn't trying.

I was watching my friend and former classmate, Scott Holmes...defending his client..

An Investment banker named Jason Wemberly, who left a party and hit and killed a man who wandered out on the highway, when he was driving....He had had a lot of champaigne at the party but was not drunk.

 The man who stumbled out on the road who got hit was under the influence of not only a lot of alcohol, but several drugs...

Scott was arguing a very good argument...a very convincing one... He was always a convincing speaker..

In Law School, he had once romanced my now wife, Bee Bee.

They dated for half a semester.... then for reasons Bee Bee never talked about , they broke up...

Bee Bee sat up with me and Sofia and cried all night, but never went into specifics....

Scott and I became friends though in our final year of law school...

We all took the Bar Exam the same day, passed and was sworn in and then like many people who graduated together...We all went our seperate ways..

Scott was arguing this Vehicular Homicide case against 

our old "friend ,Assistant District Attorney, Bruce Greene... He was putting forth an equally convincing

closing argument.....

The Trial had lasted a week...

The Judge was our favorite judge, Kelly Anne Mercer...

''Alright gentlemen...This case will go to the jury...Jurors remember...Talk to no one but each other...

Court is adjourned." she said.

"Wow...I can't face going to jail man." said his client, Jason Wemberly....

"You're not going to jail man, trust me... I already have an appeal planned just in case you get convicted.... Hey man, I want you to meet someone...This is Attorney Keith Jones, a law school class mate of mine.." said Scott.

"Hey man...you got a solid dude defending you." I said.

"Yeah he seems solid. I hope he's solid enough to keep me out of jail." said Jason Wemberly.

"He is....I know this guy...Mr. Persuasion." I laughed.

In Our Building and in our conference room..we had a spirited conversation going on...

"So where is your hubby today? He's usually drooling all over you...Surprising he's not around."said Sofia.

''He's in court...He was asked to watch the closing argument of Scott Holmes..Remember him from law school? "laughed Bee Bee.

"You used to be sweet on him for awhile...Second year of law school...What Happened?" asked Kahlil.

"Yeah, Keith and I stayed up all night with you...You cried and cried...but you never said why you two broke up."said Sofia.

"Because he was a dog....I found panties and a bra in his car... He tried to tell me that they were mine...But they weren't....I know my underwear and I never left it behind...Plus they weren't my size..."said Bee Bee. "He was cheating on me...with a girl on the other side of campus.."said Bee Bee.

"Oh Wowwwwww!....Keith was relieved that you two broke up...I knew that he secretly had the hots for you...I told him to give you some time and to make his move...but he was scared...He punked out.."laughed Sofia.

" Keith did buy me flowers and he did take me out for Pizza and Onion Rings...He was real sweet...but he didn't do anything further than that...He was still my "friend" and "Brother." tee hee..."laughed Bee Bee.

"I told him the same thing...I said make your move before somebody else does.."said Kahlil.

"OUUUUUUUUUUUU...Yall knew all along and kept it from me...How he felt.."laughed Bee Bee.

"It's a miracle you two are married."laughed Sofia.

And in Ms. Yvette's office... Yvette was holding court with her friend and sometimes adversary, Brenda Jordan..

"Girl you are blushing....What's going on?"asked Yvette.

"Girrrrrrl ,I'm seeing somebody....Another Attorney....He's younger than me and he's married, but I-I-I'm hooked.....It's like I never had sex before I met him....I know I've got to break it off, but I just can't let him go..He's Black...He's young like your four attorneys. He joined our firm and started coming on to me..I tried to reject his advances..but he's so persuasive...and so handsome and soooo damn good in the bed. His name is Scott Holmes." said Brenda.

"Ouuuu girl, you love to live dangerously don't you?" laughed Ms. Yvette.

Scott and I sat in the courthouse waiting area enjoying two "Chicago Style" Italian Hot Dogs...

"These are pretty good, but not as good as Jakes.." I said.

''MMMMMMM ,HMMMMMM!! Word!  I've been to Jakes....but these will have to do....for now." said Scott.

''So....You and Bee Bee got married huh? Two or Three years now huh?  Bought a home...Wowww...I always thought, even when I was dating her that you and her had somethin going on... She used to tell me that you was her "Big Brother...her best male friend"I never fully believed it... That's why I wasn't surprised when I heard yall got married.  I wasn't surprised that Kahlil and Sofia got hitched...WE ALL KNEW THEY WERE SCREWING..hahahahahaha."

"No foolin you huh?" I laughed.

"Yall didn't fool nobody...You four were like a cult.....Ate together, Hung  out together, Went to the movies together...Studied together...So yall all work for McCluskey/Cozen/Connor & Pratt....huh?" said Scott Holmes.

"Yeah, we are in the Bridge Building down near Penn's Landing, 5th floor.. Our offices are next to each other in our suite...We are all Senior Associates..."I said.  "You should come through...The gang would love to see you." I said.

"I just might....I need to talk to you anyway....I need a favor...I'll talk to you about it, after the verdict..

I'm seeing somebody....a white woman...She's a little older than me, an attorney at my firm...She's something else."laughed Scott,

"Aren't you married?" I asked.

"Seperated...but..we are uh alright, still friends..." said Scott.

"The Jury is back!" said Bruce Greene as he headed for the courtroom...

COURTROOM A-

"ALL RISE FOR THE HONORABLE JUDGE KELLY ANNE MERCER" said the Baillif..

Bruce Greene , Scott Holmes and his client, Jason Wemberly all stood.

"Be seated." she said.  " Has the jury reached a decision?" she asked.

"Yes your honor, we have."said the jury foreman.

The Jury Foreman passed the verdict to the bailiff, who passed it to the Judge.

She read it  and then passed it to the Baillif.. "Read it.." she said.

"We the jury , representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania find the defendent...Jason Edwin Wemberly, GUILTY as charged of Vehicular Homicide with special circumstances.

Bruce Greene pumped his fists....He had won!!

"Mr.  Wemberly....You and your Attorney approach the bench."said Judge Kelly Ann..

Jason and Scott Approached the bench..

"Because of the special circumstances of your case... Your victim obviously being more intoxicated than you.....and thus being as much responsible for his demise as you were....I am sentencing you to two years probation...100 hours of weekly counseling on alcohol abuse , but no jail time...After two years if you have no more DUI's...your record will be expunged." said Kelly Anne.

"AWWWWWWWW GEEEZ THANK YOU YOUR HONOR!!! THANK YOU!" said Jason Wemberly... "And thank you Scott." he said as he cheerfully left the courthouse...

"That was a close one Scotty." I said.

"Yeah, real close..." said Scott Holmes, sweating.

TUESDAY NIGHT-AQUA BAR

"Oh Man Keith, I love this place, Aqua Bar...And I love your lady friends... You work with all of these fine ladies?" asked Scott.

"Chill out boy, they're all married... They live on my street and we all work in the same building..They're lawyers like you and me.."I said.

"Hmmmmmmmm , they happily married?" he asked.

"Yeah man they are....Stop it man."I said,laughing..  I didn't want any trouble in here tonight.

The place was packed..

It being Tuesday, It was Taco Night...

"Wowwww...I love this... Gotta get me some Tequila.. Beatrice...Nice seeing you again...Congratulations on you and Keith's wedding..  Same to you Sofia..Kahlil."said Scott..

"Scott is working at a major law firm in town...He's a Senior Associate like us and on a fast track to making partner." I said.

"How Nice." said Bee Bee dryly...

"How Nice for him." said Sofia, equally as dryly... Those two were really sisters...

"That's cool man.." said Kahlil.

Scott had his eye on Jazzy and Kayla...

Jazzy was oblivious to him...Feeding her husband Tacos..
 

The Same was true for Kayla, who was feeding her husband, Ray, Tacos..

He spoke a little Spanish to Jessica.

She looked at him and laughed in his face....

Her husband Chip didn't find him amusing at all.

Beverly was sitting in her husband's lap...Letting him know she was off limits.

Nelson smiled with glee.

Natalie and David were kissing so passionately that he didn't bother to say anything to her.

He saw Brooke and her husband Sean deep in conversation....Too deep for him to intervene.

He knew Renee Cantrell-Jones and had heard that she had gotten married..

He guessed that her husband, was the man sitting with her...

Paris and Josie were sitting together...

And Bresha and Tony were sitting together..

Her recognized Former ADA Nina Diaz... He had heard she'd gotten married...

She was sitting on her husband's lap, feeding him Tacos.

He was smiling.

"So what was it you had to tell me?" I asked.

"Oh Yeah, Some guy is trying to blackmail me...Sheila and I have been seperated for 6 months now..I'm not staying there anymore..You know she's running for State Senator... This guy....I only know him as a voice on the phone sent me photos...Lurid photos of me and my new lady friend...She's an Attorney, her name is Brenda Jordan."said Scott,.

"BRENDA JORDAN??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" I said.

"You know her?" asked Scott.

'She's my Boss Lady's friend...Over the years we have faced off against her in court , represented her and worked with her on trials...I know her quite well."I said.

"Well I work with her at her firm....He sent me these photos and threatened to make them public if I didn't convince my wife to drop out of the race...He wants to meet with me tomorrow...Here is the favor I want from you...I need you to meet with him as my proxy....Find out what he wants and who he is..

He told me his name is Mr. Oliver..He's going to be at Bottom of the C." said Scott.

"How will I know who he is..?" I asked.

"He'll be wearing a Pink Gardenia on his lapel." said Scott...

''All you want is a meet up and some information..." I said.

"That's it...That's it buddy." he said.

Bee Bee walked over to where we were talking...She took me by the hand..

"Dance with me honey." she said..

I followed her to the dance floor.

We joined Everybody else on the dancefloor..

IV-

And at Josies,

It was Tuesday Night and just as packed as a weekend night.

Brenda Jordan didn't feel out of place being one of the few Whites in a mostly Black Bar.. She was with her friends. Olivia and her her husband, Yvette and her husband and their friends...

"This is a nice bar, a real cozy, homey kinda place.."said Brenda.

"We like it..It's comfortable..Our neighborhood safe spot."said Olivia.

"The Kids are all at  Aqua Bar tonight."said Donnie Ray.

"That's where Scott is...He graduated with Keith, Beatrice, Sofia and Kahlil...He knows them."said Brenda.

''All the more reason you should be dealing with an older  man...but hey...it's your life."giggled Yvette,

"It's like you say..I like living dangerously....One day I'll settle down and get married like you guys." laughed Brenda.

Yvette's husband Gary was paying their conversation no mind.. He presented a nother round of drinks to the table.

"See?  You get married and You can have a man do this for you." said Yvette...

Cheryl smiled...."Point Taken." She said.

"It's rare that we are all out on a Tuesday Night."said Karen..

"I know...."said her husband, B.L.

"If we didn't live closely..we wouldn't be out."said Zoey.

''I know that's right....It feels good to be able to walk home from here."said Lem.

"I know that's right." laughed Jade.

Danny brought a round of beers to the table.

"OHHHHHH THANK YOOOU!" said Virginia..

"THANK YOU!" said Jetty.

"OHHHH MYYY, I'D BETTER COOL IT...SO I CAN MAKE IT TO WORK TOMORROW!"laughed Alfreda.

"Yessssss!" laughed her husband, Rockland..

As more drinks arrived

at our two tables.

Brenda drove herself home after a great night with some of her friends...

Brenda's phone rang....It was Scott Holmes... He was on his way to her apartment...He had been at Aqua Bar with his friends tonight...While she had been at Josies...  She told him to come over..
