 I'm Donnie Ray Alexander, born in Monroe, Louisiana, Worked as a Homicide Detective in New Orleans for years...Retired from the Police Department after Katrina..Got myself a P.I. License

Met a petite and sexy little attorney named Olivia Bennett from Philadelphia during Essencefest and retired from the Police Department, traveled to Philadelphia to find her, Found her, Married her and became an investigator for her law practice, which she was just starting..

I inherited a family of her friends and associates..

I just missed walking her niece, Beverly down the aisle for her wedding...

No, her father, Olivia's older brother and my brother in law, 

Jimmy West came all the way from San-Francisco to do that...

but

I walked Olivia and Beverly's cousin Kayla down the aisle...

Their lifelong friend, Jasmine Jenkins-Coley down the aisle...

Our Associate Attorney and Beverly's close friend, Josie down the aisle..

Their lifelong friend, Natalie Tennison-Marks

And I walked our newest Attorney, Bresha Billips down the aisle at her wedding...

Lastly, I walked Beverly, Jazzy, Kayla and Natalie's childhood friend, Renee down the aisle also.

All of these girls fathers were deceased... I stood in for their fathers , even though I'm only 10-12 years older than them... They all considered Olivia and I the only family they have left, which is why they are so close to us...and why I was picked to walk them down the aisle and give them away...

Which brings me to today or rather yesterday...Yesterday ,I took on a new role.  I delivered a baby!

Jennifer's contractions began coming at a rapid pace...She was moaning...

''Donnie Ray...her contractions are coming very close together." said Olivia.

"Oh My God.."said Beverly...

''She's ready to pop."said Alfreda.

"Throw me the keys....Get her things together..I can drive her to Northwest Hospital...It's not far away.." said Nelson...

"Okay...let's get ready to roll.."I said.

"Okay, Bresha and I will follow in my car.." said Josie.

"I'll call Lee...." said Bresha.

We drove as fast as we could that night with Jennifer's contractions coming faster and faster..

We got her to the hospital...

And I, who had delivered babies before in New Orleans as a police officer and once as a detective was in the room with the doctors when Jennifer delivered a healthy 9 pound baby boy, Emilio Grant!

Mother and Baby were doing just fine...

"Husband, you never cease to amaze me..All the different things you can do...You're an incredible

Investigator,An Incredible musician,  An incredible lover....You take care of me in bed...You've walked all of my girls down the aisle just about...and now you've helped deliver a baby...What do you do for an encore?" asked Olivia ,giving me a big kiss..

"Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm hmmmmmmmmmmm!" she moaned.

"I don't know...perhaps I'll show you tonight..heh heh heh.." I laughed.

"Ouuuuuuuuu I think I'd like that." said Olivia, smiling wickedly.

"WOWWW DONNIE RAY!! I'M PROUD TO CALL YOU A MEMBER OF MY FAMILY!" said Beverly, hugging me...

''WOW! Investigator, Musician...Mid-Husband....You do it all!"laughed Nelson.

"Can we see her? Can we see the baby?" asked Josie.

"She's sleeping right now...Why don't you guys come by tomorrow?" I said.

"Dr. Donnie Ray!"laughed Paris.

"WOW!  She was not kidding when she said she was Big Pregnant..." laughed Bresha.

"Well not anymore...She's had her baby." said Tony..

"Yes...These last few days have been something." said Alfreda.

"Yes Indeed.." said Rockland. 

The next day- All of us came to visit Jennifer, starting with Lee and Matthew and Nina and Carlos.

 

"Oh My God...He's so cute!" said Lee...

"WOWWWW! Good Job!  Good Job!" said Matthew..

"I'm so happy for you." said Nina.

"Glad to see you're doing okay." said Carlos.

"Thank You...Thank you all so much.." said Jennifer as she placed a cap on her baby...  The rest of our entourage arrived shortly and bearing a Fruit basket, Bagels with cream cheese and jelly and Donuts.

"Isn't he the cutest thing?" said Jazzy, smiling and looking at the baby...
 

''And he's got all of these aunties and uncles.."said Dabnis.laughing.

"Sooo happy for you Jennifer." said Kayla.

"What a great job we have done...or rather Lee and Olivia have done...Hiding this woman out from that nut of a husband of hers, allowing her to have her baby in peace.."said Ray.

"Speaking of which , he gets out of jail today." said Jessica.

"He'll have figured out that she had the baby by now..His baby and he'll be looking for her." said Chip.

"She can't hide forever.." said Karen.

"What can be done? Restraining order or not..That is his child too!"said B.L.

"That's a good point..If they can get her out of here and back to Olivia's place before too long, maybe she can avoid harrassment from him." said Natalie.,

"Yeah...What a position to be in....Damnnn!" said David.

"I'd hate to be in her shoes.."said Brooke.

"Yeah I know what you mean." said Sean.

"You told me you did some additional digging..What did you find out Donnie Ray?" asked Zoey.

"This guy, Lionel Grant has been married two times before and both marriages were annulled early...I found both women and they both said the same thing...He's not violent, but he's egotistical, verbally and psychologically abusive ,overbearing and just plain annoying to the point that they had to get out of the marriages early and get restraining orders on him after the annullments.. They said they were glad they didn't get pregnant and were willing to testify against him in a divorce hearing." I said.

"Outstanding!" said Zoey ,smiling at Lee.

"Thank you Donnie Ray...This is all I need to take to court." said Lee.

"Now let's just hope you go before a sympathetic Judge...and not a caveman."said her husband, Lem.

"There is Fruit, Bagels, Donuts and whatnot here..  "said Renee, smiling.

"I hope you all are joining in...Emilio and I can't eat this by ourselves.."laughed Jennifer.

"Of Course not..Let us help you eat it."laughed Renee's husband, Tyrell.

 "Ummmmmmmmmmm "said Yvette, grabbing a bagel and spreading Cream Cheese on it, while smiling at the baby...

"That's a good baby...He's so quiet." said Yvette.

"That's because he's trying to sleep."laughed Gary..

"They got her here just in the nick of time."said Keith Jones.

"I heard...."said Bee Bee , who was also spreading Cream Cheese on her Bagel.

"These are hot out of the oven from Cakeman Raven's place." said Sofia.

"It's nice that they deliver." said Kahlil.

"Ummmm it is nice that they deliver." said Jade, munching on a donut....

"I left duty to be here for this momentous occassion." said her husband, Danny Ho.

"What a cute baby!" said Virginia.

"He is cute."said Jetty

He had brought a hot Thermos of coffee for everyone.

 

"Well Jennifer we got one hurdle out of the way....What's next for you?" asked Olivia.

"I talked to that Realtor lady you introduced me to and she found a nice apartment building, Me and the baby can live in , not far from where you guys live...and Womens Law Center got me a job at a place located in the shopping center near where you guys live...I like it around here...Living and working around here is ideal." said Jennifer,.

"I got you an additional 90 days on that restraining order...and that will give me time to work on your divorce."said Lee.

 

"And if we can keep that nut of a husband of yours away, that will be excellent.

"You've got a solid future ahead of you." said Beverly...

"We can only hope." said Nelson.

"Yeah, we can only hope." said Josie..

"But on a bright note...Let's look at the little slugger." said Paris.

"Yes, what a cute baby." laughed Bresha.

"Don't wake him up...He's trying to sleep." said Tony....

"Beverly was such a noisy baby, Crying and howling all the time." said Alfreda, hugging her daughter..

"But she was cute.." she added, smiling..

Beverly smiled...

"Yes she was." said her favorite aunt, Olivia, who also hugged her.."Now Kayla was the quiet baby"added Olivia.

Kayla smiled and stuck her tongue out!   We all laughed.

Rockland smiled...Grateful to be part of this family and close knit group of friends...It was the first time in his life that he actually had friends.

Jennifer held her baby,now that he was awake.

II-

ONE WEEK LATER-

Jennifer was gone!  She and her baby successfully moved into her new apartment.. and the rest of her things that wouldn't fit in her apartment was stored in nearby  Public Storage...

So we were surprised when our doorbell rang..

"Good Morning!" said Alfreda.

Two men were at the door..

"Hello Mrs. Cambridge... I'm Assistant District Attorney Jason Kyle...I called last week for an audience with Mrs. Bennett-Alexander." he said politely...

The man with him was quiet.

"Oh yes ,I remember you...Come on in..."said Alfreda ,leading them to the conference room..

"Liv this is Mr. Kyle and Mr. McClurkin...They called last week." said Alfreda. 

"Come in..Come in...Welcome, would you like some coffee? Water??"asked Olivia.

"Please" said Jason Kyle.

"Thank You." said Ken McClurkin.

"Allow me to introduce my staff...."said Olivia.

 

"My Husband and Investigator, Mr. Donnie Ray Alexander." she said.

"Pleased to meet you" I said.

"Associate Attorney and My Niece, Beverly West-East." she said.

"Hi" said Beverly..

"Her husband, Associate Attorney ,Mr. Nelson East." said Olivia.

"Hello." said Nelson.

"Associate Attorney, Josephine Boyd." said Olivia.

"Pleased to meet you." said Josie, smiling.

"And Associate Attorney, Bresha Billips."said Olivia finally..

"Pleased to meet you."said Olivia.

Attorney, now Murder Defendent ,Ken McClurken sized us up... They were a very polite group and very attractive...All of the women were very attractive he mused.  He had heard of Olivia and her niece and their high win percentage...and he believed Jason when he said  "If you're ever in trouble these are the guys you want on your side."

"Now...Tell us about yourselves and the case." said Olivia.

"Well like you Olivia, I graduated from PENN LAW SCHOOL... In fact, Some of my former classmates are close friends and associate's of yours.. Keith Jones, his wife, Beatrice Evans-Jones, Sofia Garcia-Ahmed and her husband, Kahlil Ahmed.. I graduated a year before them...but I didn't take the bar exam until a year later when they took it...We all got sworn in together. Today I'm an Assistant District Attorney." said Jason Kyle.

"Small World...They live right across the street."laughed Beverly....

''So with that said...Let me get down to cases....I was applying for a position at the Harris Group where Mr. McClurkin is the Senior Partner...Shortly after I interviewed..Mr. McClurkin was arrested and charged with the murder of Sheila Stevens..I know he is not guilty." said Jason Kyle.

"This is really dicey....Ms. Stevens , a Para-legal at our firm recently graduated from Law School..

Middleton...She and I had been romantically involved...I paid for all three years of her law school..She told me she was getting engaged to another man....I told her I understood and and   it was cool...The night she died, We had sex in my office...A kind of One for the Road if you will....but I swear...When I left the  office , she was alive...I had no ill feelings towards her nor she to me.." said Ken McCormick.

"Here's the thing...They found the murder weapon, the bloody knife in the trunk of his car...His prints and DNA are not on it...but her blood and DNA are..."said Jason Kyle.

"It's a Frame...Why would I murder someone and then put the bloody murder weapon in my car for the police to find it?" asked Ken McClurkin..."It's been years since I've been a trial attorney, but I know a thing or two about evidence..and WHO would know it was there and call the cops? I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT WAS THERE!" he asked.

"Let me guess, Is a certain Homicide Detective named Lt. Arthur Tragg the investigating oficer?  Did he come across this evidence by an anonymous tip?" asked Nelson.

"You know him well. Yes he did get an anonymous tip....It never occurred to him that the tip could have come from the real killer. or that this is a frame job." shrugged Jason Kyle.

"We know him only too well..Apparently, YOU know him too!"said Beverly..

Josie couldn't help but laugh....

"Do you have any enemies at the firm? Someone looking to move up? Someone Ruthless?? Did you let go of someone recently?" asked Olivia.

"Well, there was one, Lloyd Connor, an Attorney who was involved with his client in a money laundering scheme.. I fired him...but I didn't report him to the Legal Ethics Board.. He escaped with his license still in tact..I can't see him pulling a stunt like this."said Ken McClurkin.

"Don't rule him out.."I said.

"What are you doing out?" asked Bresha.

"I resigned from my position as Assistant District Attorney and had him arraigned in Night Court..

COURTROOM C- NIGHT COURT

The Judge in this case as I'm sure you know, would not be the Judge in the actual case....

Lt. Tragg was not there... Night court was too low profile for him...No witnesses...No media..and a bunch of  Judges  and ADA's who were mostly older Judges and ADA's about to retire...It was lightweight. It was in session from 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays...We were quite fortunate to get a date.

It was Tuesday Night, Last Tuesday Night at 9:00 PM- We were the next to last case on the docket.

The ADA that did show up was not going to be the ADA that tried the case...He had only the basic out line of the case at hand... He basically wanted to go home...So he didn't really put up much of a fight.

He was happy to see me, I had clerked for him, shortly after I passed the bar.

"I presented 34 character witnesses.. all attorneys from the Harris group, where I'm trying to find employment..

They released him on his own recognizance ,,,,That's when I called you guys ,last Thursday, but you weren't in." said Jason Kyle.

''So you are without a job?" asked Olivia.

"No....the next day...I re-applied for my job at the District Attorney's Office ,explained everything to D.A. Garcetti and was rehired."said Jason Kyle.

"You're quite an operator."laughed Alfreda, overhearing his story...

"Well, if you didn't leave anything out...We'll get to work on your case." said Olivia.

And Just like that, a new case began....

III-

THE WOMEN'S LAW CENTER-

THE OFFICE OF LEE PHILLIPS

"I know she came here and I know you're her lawyer... NOW I WANT TO KNOW THE WHEREABOUTS OF MY WIFE!!   I know she's had our baby and I NEED TO SEE IT!! WHERE IS SHE?"  screamed Lionel Grant.

"You've been in my office for over an hour screaming at me...And I told you that I'm not going to tell you anything...You will see her in court.."said Lee politely...

"I plan to get a lawyer and contest the divorce.." he said.

"You are free to do that if you wish..."said Lee.

Before Lionel could say another word..

several well armed policemen barged into Lee's office.

Nina Rios walked in behind them...

"Mr. Grant. there is a standing restraining order on you for both your wife and Attorney Phillips..you are violating that order right now..." she said as Lionel was handcuffed and escorted out..

"I don't believe this....I'm trying to find my wife and newborn child...I have a right to see my stupid, stupid wife...She can't make it without me...She needs me..." snarled Lionel Grant as he was handcuffed and walked out..

They stuffed him into a Sherrif's vehicle whisking him away and back to the cooler.

At our Office /Duplex-

Our new client, Attorney Ken McCormick watched us work..

in our law library...

Beverly was looking at her laptop and going through case files , researching everything she could about this case.

Josie was looking at Autopsy Reports  and witness statements...

She passed him a Portal..

"I assume you live a great distance from here. You can use this to keep up with us and the progress of your trial." she said.

"Wow you people are really high tech ." he said, impressed...

Bresha, the baby of the group was looking at her laptop and going through case files , researching everything she could about this case.

She passed him a smartphone..

"This is a burner phone...If you need us, don't call our Business number or our personal phones...Call the number to this phone I'm about to give you."she said.

He smiled... "Thank you." he said.   he enjoyed being in here with these attractive, well dressed women ,who were working so dilligently on his defense..

He walked into the next room where Nelson ,Olivia and I

gave him an education in "Trial Science" and how we go through the jury pool,looking at race, education, nationality, religion, how they vote, et al.. We look at all of this data and we pick potential juries.

 

His Mind was blown!

"You guys are incredible...The way you prepare for a trial...I've never seen anything like this..wow..Jason wasn't kidding." he said.

"Tomorrow I'll be on the street interviewing witnesses, people in your office and what not." I said.

"You'll have my full co-operation."said Ken McClurkin.

Night time came!

We were all home, relaxing after a pretty busy day....

Olivia and I retreated to our bedroom... 

We were kissing like there was no tomorrow, right outside our bedroom door...

We continued to kiss once in the bedroom.....I had her dress and her heels off....

falling apart psychologically, not being able to find the woman he had dominated psychologically and sexually for so long , who he had demeaned..who had found the courage to break away from him,.For once , he wasn't in control, for once...He was no longer dominating her...She had found her courage, her intelligence and her resourcefulness and was winning the chess match between them...He was falling apart.

IV-

 A Wednesday Afternoon- We all decided we'd like some seafood...So after work, all of us walked over to one of the new seafood restaurants in the neighborhood from our homes nearby...  

"Wowwww, looks like everybody had the same idea."said my wife Olivia.

 

"A taste for some good seafood...some steaks and some cold draft beers." I said, smiling, hugging her.

"Yeah, just something different tonight after two weeks of helping Jennifer and now being involved in the Ken McClurkin defense" said Beverly.

"Yeah, this is a nice break.. Nice weather tonight. "said Nelson.

"It is a nice nice.night tonight.."said Josie.

"Yeah, it is...."said Paris.

"Well  the food smells good." said Bresha.

"Yes it does...Ummmmmmmmmmmm um ummmmmmm." said Tony.

"You're not lying about that."said Alfreda.

 "This is nice to come home too!" said Rockland.

Multiple Baskets of Fried Shrimp and Cole Slaw was delivered to our tables...

 "Ouuuuuuu, everything looks and smells so damn good..." said Yvette.

"Looks and Smells good." said Gary.

"Yes it does." said Keith Jones.

"Ouuuuu pass me a basket over here."said Bee Bee.

''Aye Mios Dios, this is sooo good." said Sofia.

"This was worth missing dinner for in our building."said Kahlil.

"Oh For sure." said Jade.

"Olivia did it again..planned another great event...Did she invite all these people?" asked Danny Ho.

"Nooooooooo, just us...Our group and her group."said Virginia.. "Everyone else just had the same idea."said Virginia.

"And Not a bad one." said Jetty ,looking out at the seafood buffet and making him and Virginia a big plate.

We all lined up behind him and feasted. In addition to seafood there were good New York Strip Steaks being served for those who wanted them.

"Wow this was a good idea." said Jazzy.
 

"It was...and I have a good appetite..I missed lunch and dinner today."said Dabnis.

"Poor Thing...I know you're hungry." laughed Kayla.

"Yeah, I missed lunch and dinner too...We were at the courthouse filing briefs." said Ray.

"Well you can eat hardy now." said Jessica.

"Yeah." said her husband, Chip.

"Yeah, just something different tonight after a week in court." said Karen.

"Yeah...I'm glad I got off work early and was able to join you guys."said her husband, B.L.

"Ummmmmmmmmm I'm ready to chow down..." said Natalie.

"Yeah....me too!" said her husband, David.

"How are you feeling tonight baby?" asked Brooke.

" I'm good.... I'm good and hungry right now." said Sean.

"Good for you...I'm so happy for Jennifer...She's in her new apartment and got a new job." said Zoey.

"Yeah ,she doesn't live far from here..." said Lem.

"Yeah ,her job isn't too far from here either..She made some friends in her building and they watch the baby"said Renee.

"That's nice." said Tyrell dipping his shrimp into cocktail sauce.. 

It appeared it wasn't just us, our tight knit group that came out... but more of our neighbors...Like our good friends from the apartment complex.. Nina Rios, Her Boyfriend, Carlos Diaz, our good friend, Lee Phillips and her boyfriend, Matthew Ake.

"Ummm some good eating tonight. Steaks and Seafood...Can't miss with that."laughed Matthew.

So was her boyfriend, Lt. Tragg , who shook his head..He couldn't escape us...Not in this neighborhood where we all lived anyway.

Attorney Lloyd Connor was having drinks

with a beautiful young woman...

when a strange person he didn't expect to see walked up on his table.

"Hello Lloyd, bet you didn't expect to see me huh?  Thought I'd be rotting away in jail awaiting trial huh?  Well I'm out.." said Ken McCormick.

"This is not the time or the place...I figured with all of the lawyers at the Harris Group, someone would spring you..but not for long...Nobody there is built for the problems you got."laughed Lloyd, who was a little nervous.

The woman he was drinking with, excused herself and exited the table.

"Newsflash buddy...The lawyers I got have no ties to the Harris Group....They're some of the most successful defense attorneys in the city. After they get me off.. I'm going to turn my attention to you...You prick...I know this was you and I'm going to prove it and I'm not going to stop until you are behind bars!" said Ken McCormick, who grabbed one of the beers, drank it down and left.

Lloyd Connor did look surprised to see him out of jail..and he seemed a bit concerned about his threat too!.
