CURLEY'S BAR-COUPLES NIGHT-
 

As usual, the drinks were flowing...This night was special..We were celebrating the wedding anniversaries of Ms. Yvette,Gary, Myself, Bee Bee , Sofia and Kahlil...We had all gotten married within a nine week period and moved into the nighborhood shortly after that...

It had been a surprise...The Six of us hadn't known about it before hand..

"I confess I did...Olivia and Alfreda had sworn me to secrecy!" said Gary, smiling and hugging Ms. Yvette...

"Were you surprised Vettie?" gushed Olivia.

Ms. Jade smiled and clapped. We were the closest thing to family she had in the United States since becoming a naturalized American Citizen.

Her husband Danny Ho clapped also...They had married shortly after we did and moved into our neighborhood.

"I'm so happy for you guys." said Virginia, clapping...

"Here comes the Cake." said Jetty...

A Huge Cake was wheeled over to our area which was cordoned off, just for our group...

by Curley, the Owner and Head Bartender..

"Happy Anniversary you guys." he said.

Though we only came in once a week..On Thursday Nights...We spent a lot of money on drinks...

He liked us ...So when we asked for a Private Section, roped off.. He obliged.

There was three large trays of cold cuts, condiments, mayo, mustard and hard rolls for sandwiches ,cole slaw and creamy pasta. brought in by Olivia and Alfreda's catering truck..

Alfreda and Renee Cantrell-Jones arranged everything.

"Alright Guys...Dig in... Happy Anniversary Vettie, Gary,Keith, Bee Bee, Sofia and Kahlil." said Alfreda...

"Enjoy!" said Renee. 

"Renee, thanks for all your help...You really enjoy organizing these things.. You're an Attorney and an event planner."laughed Olivia.

"My Husband always teases me and says that."laughed Renee.

 

"He's got a point." said Donnie Ray...

"This is sooo nice and we surprised all three couples... I didn't think we'd be able to pull it off...You know how hard it is to keep a secret among a close knit group like this."said Beverly.

"I know...I just knew somebody was going to let the cat out of the bag." said Nelson.

"Truth of the matter only a limited amount of people knew...Just us and Mr. Gary."said Josie.

"Yeah, you didn't even tell me until this morning." said her husband, Paris.

"This is a nice event.."said Bresha.

"Yeah, lots of good food, Lots of drinks..I don't know if I'll be able to go to work tomorrow."laughed Tony.

"Oh you'll be just fine." said Alfreda, passing her husband a sandwich...

 "Ummmmmmmmmmm yes, you'll be fine."laughed Rockland.

"I'm so happy for Vettie and her staff...They all got married within Three Weeks of each other..I remember." said Nina.

"Remember when they all met us at the beach and had a little party for us.?" said Chip.

"I do remember....That was very nice."said Jessica.

"We missed so much, so many of the things you guys used to do...but we won't miss them now." said Karen, glad to live on our block and to work in the same building with most of us.

"For sure." agreed her husband, B.L.

"We've been having too much fun lately....It ought to be against the law."laughed Natalie.

"That's what I said."laughed Jazzy.....

"Enjoy it...There is no sin in having fun and living well."said David.

"David is right..We deserve it." said Brooke, Glad to be living and working amongst all of these people and socializing with them on a regular.

"Pass me a sandwich babe." laughed Sean.

"WOW! What a night! " said Zoey...

"We'll sleep good tonight." said her husband, Lem, putting his arm around her.

"Where is the Champaigne?" asked Renee.

"Oh Wow! All this and Champaigne too?" asked her husband, Tyrell..

"Coming Right Up" said Curley , who brought the bar's most expensive Champaigne.

We all had a toast....

Lt. Tragg fresh off of his two week stint on the Marine Boat walked in..He saw our section cordoned off..He saw The Champaigne, The Drinks , The Sandwiches and the Cake...

"What's Going On Here?  " he asked.

"It looks like somebody's birthday or something.."said Judge Kelly Ann, who was with him...

 

 "We are celebrating our Wedding Anniversaries.., Me and Gary, Bee Bee and Keith and Sofia and Kahlil....We all got married within three weeks of each other." gushed Ms. Yvette.

"Have some Cake." said Gary cutting a slice for both Lt. Tragg and Kelly Ann...

"Ohhh how sweet...And how nice of all your friends coming out to celebrate with you..Thank you." said Kelly Ann.

"Thanks Guys. Congratulations on the wedding anniversarys." said Lt. Tragg.

"Thank You!It's nice that on a night like this..We aren't beefing with him." I said.

Across the bar from us sat Attorney Miles Ellis

He was with a very attractive young woman.. Serena Stevens, a School Teacher and former High School Principal who had been his client for a few weeks.. A mutual attraction had grown between them and this was their first date...

Our two buses pulled up...along with the catering van...We all poured out of Curleys....It was almost 2:00 am, closing time.

 

 "What's going on? Police and an Ambulance...And Miles Ellis...He looks like he's been hurt.."said Yvette.

"I thought he and that girl left hours ago..."said Gary,.,

"They came together around the same time we did...They came in her 2025 Audi Suv." I said.

"And Miles looks like somebody socked him." said Kahlil.

"Maybe they did." said Jade.

"Maybe the girl has a boyfriend." said Danny Ho.

"Try a husband... She was seperated and Miles was handling her seperation and pending divorce."said Virginia.

"Maybe her husband didn't think so." said Jetty with a wry smile.

"Yeah, he beat Miles up and took off with his wife.. Now Miles has no ride home." said Nina Rios.

 "I think that ambulance is taking him to the hospital for the night." said Carlos.

"Miles can't seem to stay out of trouble can he?" said Olivia.

 

"We don't know what happened."said Donnie Ray.

"It looks like he got surprised by a jealous husband or boyfriend...Who knows what this girl had goin on?" said Beverly.

"Well at any rate, Miles got a good whack...He's bleeding profusely..."said Nelson.

"I wonder if they got caught in the act...and Miles got pummeled?" asked Josie.

"Miles can't seem to stay out of trouble can he?" said Karen....

"Yeah who knows? But where is she? I think there is more to this."said her husband, David.

"We are all going to know pretty soon, I'll bet." said Brooke.

"He's working for Yvette's law firm..That woman was his client." said Sean...

"Nothing wrong with that, but he's got to learn more discretion."said Lem.

"That's weird....They pulled up in the parking lot the same time we did...In that SUV...Now she's gone, the vehicle is gone and he's left for dead...Something is off about this."said Lee.

"She doesn't seem like that type and they appeared to be getting along just fine in Curleys...How could things have gone sideways so fast?" said her boyfriend, Matthew...

We piled into our two buses that were going to take us home and slowly pulled off..

Miles was rushed to the hospital in the ambulance...

Lt. Tragg watched as everybody pulled off.

We were all home from a night at Curley's...

She kept telling Detective Pike and the other detectives on the scene that she didn't kill the man and that she didn't know how he died..she seemed in a daze..

"This guy has been dead for about two hours..." said  Dr.Hazel Baylor.

"She's in shock!" said Dr. Marcy Martin.

"Get her to a hospital....and get this man's body out of here."said Detective Pike.

The Body of the dead man was put on a gurney in a body bag and wheeled to a waiting van....Serena Stevens was taken to the hospital...

What a night and early morning this had been.

THE NEXT MORNING-  THE BRIDGE BUILDING-

Miles looked around our suite...He had heard Yvette made partner, but this was his first time actually coming to her suite...

He couldn't believe Yvette, who had once been his protoge....Who he had once supervised was now a Partner...Kind of his superior...Not just a partner...but with her own suite and her own staff.

Virginia Shaw-Dukes, who he knew from the past...Once a great Attorney in her own right was now Yvette's Office Manager and Consultant...

Yvette was actually glad to see him , glad to see he was alright..She took him on a tour of the suite.

"Hi Miles....Didn't expect to see you so soon...That was some night last night huh?" said Yvette.

"A Better night for you guys than me...Happy Belated Wedding Anniversary....."said Miles.

"Let me show you around." said Ms. Yvette.

   She took him  first, To my office...

Then to Beatrice's Office...

To Sofia's Office...

To Kahlil's Office...

and finally to Jade's Office..

"My Vettie, you have really come up.....Partner....Wowww!   None of these kids (meaning Me, Bee Bee, Kahlil and Sofia) were here last time I worked here...Now they are here, got their own offices and are Senior Associate Attorneys...wowwwwww.....Even your investigator has her own office...Good looking out...And you got Virginia Shaw working here too....as a what now, Consultant?" he said.

"Yes that's right..Office Manager and Consultant.We are a pretty tight knit group here...Everybody is comfortable here." said Yvette.. "Glad to see you are doing well... What happened that night last week when we last saw you?" asked Yvette.

"That's what I'm here for......Serena and I went out to her SUV...We made love for about two hours..

We were out in the parking lot afterwords...She was putting on lipstick and straightening her clothes and so was I and then the lights went out....I remember a sharp pain and that was it.. When I woke up, I was bleeding and she was gone...

They found her outside the city limits in a daze and her abductor, who it turns out was her brother in law on the side of the road, dead!  She says she didn't kill him...but her SUV has a dent in the side..   She has no memory of anything...but she's about to be charged with 2nd degree murder...I checked on her... Lt. Tragg and Sgt Pike have brought her in for questioning.

I need your help Vettie...I'm ...I was representing her in her divorce....but this is murder....I hear these kind of cases is your expertise....Will you help me Vettie?" asked Miles Ellis.

"Yes... I've got to see her first...Where is she?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"At Central Booking....." said Miles.

"Let Me Round up the troops." said Yvette.

"Thanks Vettie." said Miles.
