"ALL RISE FOR THE HONORABLE JUDGE LEE EAGER!" said the Bailiff.

The Judge walked in and sat down..

"All right, All Right be seated... Has the Jury come to a decision?" he asked.

"YES YOUR HONOR WE HAVE!" said the Jury Foreman.

The Jury foreman gave the sealed verdict to the Bailiff , who passed it to the judge.

"Here your honor!" she said.

"Thank you!' said the Judge, who read the verdict and then passed it to the Baillif...

"Will the defendant and his attorneys please stand!" he said.

Attorney Alexa Pratt stood with the defendant..

Roscoe Larue, charged with 2nd degree Murder... It was the biggest case Alexa had handled so far in her short legal career.

Her second chair on this case was Attorney and former mayor's wife, Anita Brown....She was recently divorced and working as an Attorney..

Since she hadn't practiced law in years...She was shadowing Alexa, one of the firms brightest stars...on this case....

Mayor Cecil "Get Right" Brown was tired of looking like a fool.. His wife's extra-marital affairs were making him look like a cuck. He filed for and got a quick divorce....She was an Attorney...She had graduated from law school with Beverly, Kayla and Jazzy...

 

Had Passed the Bar and been sworn in along with them and had been an Assistant District Attorney for about a year and a half....She married City Councilman, Cecil "Get Right " Brown who became the Mayor.  Now newly divorced...She'd have to work  again for a living...Get with a firm ,find a mentor and practice law...She had gotten hired by McCluskey/Cozen/Connor and Pratt.

She liked Alexa enough...She was a doll baby....but she was probably having her first period, probably trying on her first training bra around the time she was graduating from law school and passing the bar and getting sworn in as an attorney.

But... Alexa had been a working attorney all this time and had worked with the best... Olivia and her niece, her old law school chum, Beverly... and their group.. They had represented her twice over the years.

 

as well as with the Attorneys who had subpoenaed her and thus closed the door on her marriage, Yvette Jones-Lockwood and company.. 

 

You could tell Alexa had learned a lot from all of them...She handled herself like a boss this entire trial...

Hired a good investigator, Milt Lewis, an ex detective to investigate the case and picked the jurors she wanted. 9 out of 12.....

Yes, working this case with Alexa was like a refresher course in criminal law for her...It was all coming back to her in a wave....

"WE THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA IN THE MATTER OF PENNSYLVANIA VS.
ROSCOE LARUE... ON COUNT ONE...WE FIND THE DEFENDENT NOT GUILTY OF THE CHARGE OF SECOND DEGREE MURDER. ON COUNT TWO ,WE FIND THE DEFENDANT NOT GUILTY OF THE CHARGE OF USE OF AN INSTRUMENT OF CRIME IN THE COMMISSION OF A CRIME AND ON COUNT THREE, WE FIND THE DEFENDANT NOT GUILTY OF CONSPIRACY TO COMMITT MURDER." Said the Bailiff.

"YESSSS!  OUUUUUUU THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU BOTH!" said a jubilant Roscoe Larue...Happy at being acquitted...

"You're quite welcome." said Anita Brown...

Alexa was jubilant!

"You're welcome!  She turned to Anita... Nice job backing me up counselor.." she said with a smile.

"This was your show baby girl...but thank you for the refresher course..." she said and smiled.

Of course we were there to congratulate our girl, Alexa. 

 "Congratulations baby girl, you ran that case like a boss." said Yvette, hugging Alexa and rocking her back and forth.

"Thank youuuu.I had great teachers." said Alexa...

"And you were no slouch either." I said to Anita Brown, who looked at me lustfully..

"Shame you're married." she thought to herself.. "Thank you" was all she managed to say.

"You did well....Hopefully there are no hard feelings." said Bee Bee.

"Nah, what happened, happened...Besides you guys never questioned me....I thought we both were going to get out of that courtroom unscathed...It was that cakeback prosecutor, trying to make points that did the real damage...But...that's all part of the past now....No hard feelings." she said and managed a smile.

"We are going to grab a bit so eat at Sam Mothers...We'd love if you joined us." said Sofia.

"Yeah, come on." said Kahlil.

She was genuinely touched...."I will have to take a raincheck....What I need is a cold one right now." said Anita.

"You sure?" said Jade.

"I'm sure." said Anita Brown with a smile.

The losing prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney, Chris Garcetti, the D.A.'s son was not happy with Lt. Tragg.

"DAMN IT Lieutenant, this is another half assed case you put together...I told you, I begged you, Recanvass, bring me another witness...Something, but nooooooooooo you insisted that I had enough..OUUUUUUUUUUU!" said a livid Chris Garcetti.

"DON'T BLAME ME....YOU GOT OUT LAWYERED BY THAT SNOT NOSED KID...SHE'S YOUNGER THAN YVETTE'S YOUNGINS and the Mayor's Ex-Wife, who hasn't been in a courtroom since she passed the bar..." sneered and angry Lt. Tragg.

The Press converged on them...

"Hey Artie, when's the last time you won a case?" sneered one..

"I know, during the Kennedy Administration." said another one...

The room burst into laughter.

"THAT'S IT LOU!! I'VE HAD IT!!" snarled Lt Tragg, who waded into the reporters... Fist were flying...

punches were thrown and an outright brouhaha began...

Anita slipped past the crowd...

"Oh Myyyyyy" she said...

At Sam Mothers Diner, Alexa was reunited with her boyfriend, Attorney Daniel Bristol.

"MMMMMMMMMMMMMM I'm so sorry I missed the end of the trial baby." said Daniel as he held Alexa in his arms and kissed her..

"Well you can buy my lunch for me....Sike I'm just kidding." said Alexa..

"No.....Your lunch is on me." insisted Daniel.

"Awwwww you're such a sweet boyfriend." said Alexa..

Daniel just swooned.

 

 "I'm famished...Let's eat." said Yvette.

''Yes..Let's eat." I agreed.

"We are hungry and we didn't even do anything except observe." said Bee Bee.

" This is a great day, they are having a steak and Potato special." said Sofia.

"Ummmmmmmmmm let's order." said Kahlil.

"Yes." agreed Jade.

We ordered Six New York Strip Steaks and Baked Potatoes... Anita Brown would probably be sorry she missed coming over here with us.

Alexa and Daniel ordered the same.... 

Lt. Tragg walked in...One of the sleeves was ripped on his suit and he had a black eye. He saw us...and he walked over to our table, He looked at Alexa.

"Well Well Well....It's Ms. High in Demand." he said.

"That's right...My baby is high in demand." said Daniel proudly, with his arms around Alexa.

Alexa smiled. 

 "Is there something that you want Lieutenant?  " asked Ms. Yvette, smiling sweetly.

"They're having this Steak and Baked Potato special today, You ought to get on it." I said smiling.

"It's very good...Don't you smell that?" said Bee Bee, smiling.

"Mmmmmmmmmmm MMMMMMMMMMMM, It smells good doesn't it?" said Sofia.

Neither Kahlil nor Jade said a word, they just began to chow down as their plates arrived.

"Real Cute...I know about the special... Ms. Pratt here has appeared in trials with Olivia and Beverly and with you guys....Why is she so high in demand?" asked Lt. Tragg.

"Because she's good!... You see she won her case today ,and neither Olivia or Beverly nor our group was involved. We just came to watch her in action." said Yvette in all seriousness as her plate, Mine, Bee Bee, Sofia and Kahlil's plates arrived...

"Where is uh her partner? The Mayor's ex-wife....I didn't realize she was an attorney." said Lt. Tragg.

"Oh Yes...She was an Assistant District Attorney at one point...Then she got married to the mayor...now she's working again..."said Yvette...

With that, we began eating our meals...

our salads arrived..... Soon Lt. Tragg was all but ignored as our attention went to our meals...

He scoffed and then walked away.

Anita Brown was at Curley's Bar..having a cold one..

She was drinking a tall glass of Beer.

A Citrus Martini was delivered to her table.

"I didn't order this." she said.

"I know you didn't...I ordered it." said Attorney Thomas White.....

"OH MY GOD!! THOMAS!!" she said.

She hadn't seen him in two years....

"How you doin?  I heard you won your case today." he said.

"I was second chair....but I see you've been keeping up .....Hahahahaa, so you know I'm divorced now too!"she said.

"Yeah, I heard...I watch the news and I still read the papers." said Thomas.

More drinks arrived at their table.

"Ouuuuuuuuuuu" she said.

They had met years ago when Anita Brown had been lecturing at Middleton Law School where he was attending... She had been an Assistant District Attorney by day and a lecturer on her off days and some nights.

He had been a very flirtatious student...She ignored him mostly until he graduated...He asked her to help him study for the bar...She refused... He went on to pass the bar with high scores anyway.

Once he was a sworn in Attorney her interest in him increased and they began sleeping together whenever she was in Bayside and later when he came to Philadelphia.

They lost contact with each other eventually and she was caught with another attorney, a white man-

Edward Holman during his trial, which exposed her... Her husband, The Mayor of Philadelphia, who finally had had enough and divorced her, cutting his losses...

Now she was free.

"I'm working now....I'm an Associate Attorney at McCluskey/Cozen/Connor and Pratt." she said.

"WOWWW! That's a good firm...One of the most prestigious firms in the city." said Thomas White.

"What are you doing? You still working for that Hedge Fund Conglomerate?  " asked Anita Brown..

"Oh Nooo, I'm a Senior Associate Attorney at Monsoon and Wedgeworth...Been there for about two years now." said Thomas White.

"You've done well for yourself." said Anita Brown.

"I can't complain.." said Thomas White...

"No you can't!" she laughed.   He loved her laugh.

She took her foot and slowly rubbed his leg and placed her foot between his legs on to his crotch

under the table..

He smiled.

"It's been a long time Anita." he said as he quaffed his last drink...

"Too Long..." she said with a smile.

"Check Please!" he said softly,  smiling.

They drove to a Center City Hotel..

"Do you have stock in the Hilton?" Anita asked..  "If I remember, the last time we hooked up it was in the Hilton.." she laughed...

"Ha Ha....I don't have stocks, but that's not a bad idea.... One of the partners at my firm told me I should invest." laughed Thomas White..

"Not a bad idea at all..." whispered Anita . "Ummmm come here.." she said as they  began to kiss.

"That's always nice." said Anita, thinking about tucking away a little more money so she could afford a better apartment.

We had Coffees and Churros for everybody.....

"Meanwhile we can use this free time to reflect."I said with tongue in cheek.

"You sound like Ms. Yvette." said Bee Bee.

"He does...in fact, I was going to say that." laughed Ms. Yvette.

"I was going to say that too." admitted Sofia.

"That just goes to show you that I've trained you well..You all are beginning to sound like me..." laughed Yvette.

"Your mini me's." laughed Kahlil.

"Exactly." laughed Jade.....

Virginia smiled.

"You all really love Ms. Yvette!" Anita laughed to Virginia.

"We owe our careers to her... She hand picked Keith, Beatrice, Sofia and Kahlil from her alma -mater,

University of Penn Law school and gave them their first employment...They helped Jade get her citizenship and employed her as an investigator... I was a disbarred attorney, who had just got paroled after serving 7 years in the State Penitentiary... She gave me a job as her office manager." said Virginia.

"WOW!" said Anita who looked around... Here was Yvette Jones-Lockwood, A young Black woman, about 9 years older than her who was a Partner in a major law firm with her own office and her own staff made up entirely of people of color, African American, Puerto Rican, Arab and Asian, Male and Female...It was awe inspiring.... She loved it!

IV-

Our next case was about to unfold right before us.

That afternoon ,Attorney Thomas White was leaving a Wine and Spirits store when he got a phone call.

"Yes Mr. Enright....I have the folder...I can bring it to the office tonight." he said.

"You need it tonight? Okay...Where are you?   A Motel?  Okay...I'll be there in an hour." said Thomas White.

AN HOUR LATER-

Thomas White arrived at the motel...He had no idea why his supervisor, Mr. Enright, a managing partner at the firm was asking him to meet at this sleazy motel...Enright, a recently divorced man lived in a tony townhouse in the city...

He did as he was told.. He knocked on the door several times..There was no answer!  He opened the door and to his horror, his boss, Michael Enright was lying across the floor, with a pool, of blood near his head.

He gasped and that's the last thing he remembered...He was struck in the back of the head with a sap and knocked unconscious.

When he awoke..

The room was full of people, snapping photos and examining the body on the floor..

"It was a close contact wound...One shot to the head." said One CSI worker...

Another CSI man snapped photos....

"He was killed instantly, one shot to the head." said another.

"By the size of the hole and this shell recovered here...I'd say a 44.caliber." said One detective.

"That's a big gun.." said another detective.

"The dead man's name is Michael Enright....He's an Attorney......"said Dr. Hazel Baylor..

Dr. Marcy Martin applied a cold compass to the head of Thomas White, who was found at the scene..

"He called me, He told me to meet him here tonight with a file....I drove over here , found him dead on the floor and was hit with a sap, knocked cold.." said Thomas White,.

"Where's the file?" asked Lt. Tragg.

"I don't know....It's, It's gone!" said Thomas White...

"There is no phone on Enright ." said Lt. Tragg.

"Look, somebody hit me in the head..."said Thomas White..

"I think you'd better come down town for questioning." said Lt. Tragg. "Let's get this body out of here and seal this room up." said Lt. Tragg.

The Body of Michael Enright was placed in a white body bag and strapped to a gurney and wheeled out..

"Girls you know the drill, get me the autopsy report and pictures as soon as possible."said Lt. Tragg.

"Yes we know." sighed Hazel ,who despised Lt. Tragg.

"Yes we know." said Dr. Marcy Martin.

THAT SAME NIGHT AT CURLEYS-

"So this is what you call "Couples Night eh?" said Anita. 

 "Yes, we come here every Thursday night with our significant other." said Yvette , smiling.

Anita was starting to like Yvette more and more, the more she was around her...She was no longer angry at being subpoenaed in that Eddie Holman case.

"We order drinks and we get two free drinks in addition." said Gary.

''We love it.." I said.

"I'm glad it's only one night a week...This could potentially turn us into alcoholics." joked Bee Bee.

"Nahhhhh we are alright, We don't drink that much....Most of this is fellowshipping, We get to see everybody outside of work."said Sofia.

"Yeah." said Kahlil.

"The drinks is the draw though." said Jade.

"But of course.." said her husband, Danny.

" I know you're recently divorced , but don't you have somebody you coulda brought tonight?" asked Virginia.

"Virginia!" cautioned Jetty.

"Oh No that's a legitimate question...I do have a male friend....I've called him several times, but he hasn't answered...Guess he was busy tonight,." said  Anita..  "Olivia, Donnie Ray, Beverly, I can't thank you enough for defending me two years ago." said Anita. 

"It's our job Anita...Sorry to hear about your divorce, but happy to see you landed on your feet with a new job at my girlfriend's law firm." said Yvette.

"Yesss...The Money is good and I promise you , next time I come here.I'll have a plus one."said Anita.

 

"I'm sure you will." said Donnie Ray.

"You might have one before the night is over, Several guys in here have been breaking their necks ,looking at you girl."said Beverly.

"Yeah." said Nelson with a smile.

"Yeah, but you know what?  I think I'd rather have what you guys have ,one special guy...I had that and I didn't know what to do with it...Didn't know lucky I was." admitted Anita.

"We all make mistakes...You'll get another chance."said Josie.

"You're still young and pretty." said Paris.

"That's right." said Bresha,.

"My friend from Middleton Law Schol, Thomas White used to have a thing for you...You should call him up." said Tony...

"Really?" said Anita with a wry laugh...

"Don't pay them any mind Anita, move at your own pace." said Alfreda.

Rockland wisely avoided this conversation...He simply nodded and smiled.

 

"This is so cool...And you guys come here every Thursday huh?" said Anita. 

"Yeah...unless there is an emergency or another engagement..."said Jazzy.

"On Thursday Nights, this is where you'll find most of us." said Dabnis.

"The World's Biggest Clique." said Kayla.

"That's us." said Ray laughing.

"In Law School, Beverly, Jasmine and Kayla were already a Clique...They just expanded it to include their husbands and neighbors."joked Anita.

"That's about the size of it..We all live in the same neighborhood, and most of us work in the same building.." said Jessica.

"It's a wonder we don't get tired of each other." joked Chip.

"Too much history intertwined...Olivia, Yvette and me were in law school together...I lived across the hall from them." said Karen.

"I imagine that was an interesting hallway." said B.L.

"Jasmine and I met in the 7th Grade and two years later in 9th Grade she introduced me to Beverly and Kayla. We were a Clique." said Natalie.

"Oh My God! They were such a clique....I went to High School and College with the four of them....But now in Adult life...I love them like sisters." said Natika.

Her boyfriend, Deputy District Attorney, Lester Burke just laughed...

Natalie's husband, David smiled.

"I met Natalie when we both were young Attorneys in Washington D.C.  We hooked up again when we both moved to Philly and she introduced me to her sister friends." said Brooke.

"I was in D.C. with both of them...And we came back to Philly around the same time." said Sean...
