The Last Entanglement

MONDAY MORNING- COURTROOM B-

We found ourselves in Judge Elizabeth Coleman's courtroom... She was at one time an Attorney with our firm, McCluskey/Cozen/Connor & Pratt . We had even defended her once..Old business, Old news..She was no longer with our firm and no longer our client. She was a Judge and we were in her courtroom.

We stood with our client Karrie Pantel, accused of Wrongful termination and with workplace sexual harrassment...

On the other side of the divide.. Attorney Joan Wong stood with her client, Jerry Adair, who was accusing our client of sexual harrassment and wrongful termination....

Kahlil and I went to work immediately... picking the jurors we wanted on Voir Dire.

Joan Wong was no slouch ,She was pretty good at Voir dire...but not good enough...We got a 7-5 split our way...

Yvette, Sofia and Bee Bee gave us a thumbs up.....

And so the arguments began...

Joan Wong presented several emails  and texts sent by  Karrie to Jerry including the salacious videos we had already shown the press.. 

April 2021-

"Hiiiiiiiiiii Jerry, I just bought these today....If you want to see me in them you'll meet me at this hotel in twenty minutes...

She looked at him..

"I supposed she forced you to pay for those hotels and motels too under the threat of being fired.. Judging by that huge bulge in your trousers.....It doesn't look like she forced you to do much."said Bee Bee.

The Jury howled with laughter...

"Alright, order, order...ORDER in this courtroom...

Yvette stood up..

"It's quite obvious these accusations are groundless... My client is telling the truth they had a consensual relationship..."she said.

Kahlil called him up to the stand.... He had a book...

"You ever seen this book before?" he asked.

"Yes..That's by my favorite poet." said Jerry.

"Really?  You purchased this book on the day you met Mrs. Pantel. I have the Debit Card receipt....Yet you told Mrs. Pantel, who was doing her laundry in the laundromat that happens to be in YOUR building, which just HAPPENS to be down the street from you that this was your favorite poet too! I don't think that's true... I think you've seen her in there before, doing laundry and reading that book and I think you made sure to place yourself in that laundromat when she was there..THis was not harrassment...This was calculated, wasn't it?" asked Kahlil..

"SPECULATION....YOUR HONOR...HE'S BADGERING THE WITNESS!" said Attorney Joan Wong...

"SUSTAINED ,MOVE ON COUNSELOR!" said Judge Coleman..

Kahlil smiled... He just wanted the jury to hear this......" Withdrawn your honor." said Kahlil smiling slyly.

"Mr. Adair..was your relationship with Mrs. Patel consensual at any point?" asked Attorney Joan Wong.

"In In the beginning, but I soon discovered that she was my boss... I found out when I went to work and I tried to break it off and she kept harrassing me and sending me panty pictures as you've seen and she finally terminated my employment.." said Jeremy Adair, nearly in tears..

Ms. Yvette and I brought Human resources personnel from the satellite office  who stated that his contract ran out and that Mrs. Pantel had nothing to do with their decision not to renew.. They denied even knowing about a romantic or sexual relationship between the two. 

 

Joan Wong had one last card to play... An email written by Karrie Pantel sent to Jerry Adair.

"I'm sure she did.. She's very thorough...If that was there, she would've pulled it." said Bee Bee

"Oh My God!" said Sofia.

''All the progress we were making.."said Kahlil.

"I didn't write that...I swear...I NEVER sent that one... I showed you guys everything..Why would I leave that out...I didn't write that...It's a fake."protested Karrie.

"I'm through fighting for you , you tramp!" snarled her husband, Derek Pantel, who got up and stormed out..

''Derek...DEREK!!!....I never wrote that email...I swear..."said a tearful Karrie, running after him...

"ORDER!!! ORDER!! "screamed the Judge...

We waded through the press refusing to answer any questions.

"Let's get back to our office,,,we've got to sort this out." said Ms. Yvette.

Karrie was in tears..."What are they trying to do to me? I didn't write that email." she protested.

"This does smell rotten.... Jade wouldn't have overlooked that email... She wouldn't have." I said.

"I know she wouldn't have.." said Bee Bee.

''We've got to find out where it came from.." said Sofia.

"Yes." agreed Kahlil as we left the courthouse.

II-

We met with Jade back at our office...

"I went through every single email and text between the two and I swear , THAT one was not there.. If it was I would have seen it and pulled it...This is a trick..."said Jade.

"I believe you...You've been nothing but thorough...but we've got to find out where that email came from and fast... "said Ms. Yvette..

''We were winning, we had em on the ropes until his lawyer pulled that card." I said.

"That's all the jury will remember.." said Bee Bee.

''We had momentum...I hate to lose a case we were winning so easy." said Sofia.

"I know...In that minute I felt like an amateur." said Kahlil.

"We've got to get to the bottom of this fast...and there is only one person that can help us."said Jade.

Bonnie walked into Yvette's new office... It was her first time at this new location...

"Hi..I'm Bonnie Shay.." said Bonnie.

"Hi I'm Virginia Shaw, office manager.. Pleased to meet you.. They're waiting for you." said Virginia who took Bonnie past our conference room into our media room.

"NICE DIGS VETTIE GIRL, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PROMOTION! MANAGING PARTNER EH?  NICEEEEEEE!"said Bonnie.

"Hi Bonnie, thanks for coming..We need you."said Ms. Yvette.

Bonnie Shay was an Insurance Investigator, for Cyclops Insurance.. she was also an Attorney who had been a Public Defender once and an Assistant District Attorney in New York City.  What we needed her for was her other talent..She was a computer whiz.. Olivia and Beverly used her skills from time to time when a case called for it.

''Hi Bonnie.."said Bee Bee.

"Hi Bonnie!" said Sofia.

"Hello Ms. Bonnie." I said.

"Hello Ms. Bonnie." said  Kahlil.

"Now, what can I do for you guys?" asked Bonnie.

"This email...We need to know where it came from, when it was sent...the works...We suspect it's a plant." said Yvette.,

"Okay...I'm On it." said Bonnie.

While Bonnie worked on the email's origin, Jade had news for us..

"I did some research...Apparently Mr. Pantel and Mr. Adair have known each other for years....He was an instructor when Jerry Adair studied Pre-Law, Administration of Justice and Trial Advocacy at University of PENN, Jerry flunked out after two years... Mr. Pantel helped to get him readmitted into school. He studied Computer Science, which he seemed to have a better apptitude in and graduated just barely from PENN.

Mr. Pantel also got him a job at the Pantel Software Group...He has worked three different times, two six month contracts and his last nine month contract...He undersands how this works..And he's not unemployed either..He's currently working on a six month contract job at a rival software company...Take a guess who got him the job?

Derek Pantel!

"Her husband...He's behind this... He's been behind this all along.. He told Adair what kind of poetry she likes." I said.

"He fished him into that laundromat when he knew she'd be there.. He was directing this whole thing the entire time. but why?" said Bee Bee.

"Jealousy. He started out as her mentor, her teacher, her protector..Now she's the boss, she runs a profitable company..She's eclipsed him...He's carried this rage, this extreme jealousy and envy this all consuming anger in him all this time..."said Ms. Yvette.

"He has now become the interim CEO of the company and they are now asking for her to step down and resign effective immediately regardless of the outcome of this trial."said Sofia.

"Looks like his little plan is about to succeed...I have to admit this was genius." said Kahlil.

"I found the source of that email...It came from Mrs. Pantel's laptop on this day and at this time."said Bonnie Shay.

''She didn't send this...She couldn't have.. She was with me that day...Here..you all are witnesses. This is a fake...Definitely a fake and I can prove it!"said Ms. Yvette.

''And this email was sent way after he was terminated and had pressed charges. Look at the date and time." I said.

"I think we need to have a meeting with all of the charactors involved." said Ms. Yvette.

ONE HOUR LATER!

''What? You think I am involved in this? Oh you've got to be joking..." laughed a very nervous Derek Pantel.

''We are not joking.." said Sofia. "This email...This email was sent after Mr. Adair's contract was up, so he was in no fear of being terminated and in fact he was already working at another site...A Job you provided for him by the way...And from bank records , we see a transfer from your pocket account of 7 million dollars into his bank account.. It's all over! You orchestrated this entire little charade so you could take over the company...So you could be the big dog.. You could be charged with Fraud, Conspiracy, Wire Fraud, Identity Theft and a whole lot more... You're looking at Prison, Federal Prison...Think about it." said Yvette.

''Did you really hate me that much Derek? I did whatever you wanted, whatever you said...Why Derek, why?" said a tearful Karrie Pantel...

Jade and Bonnie looked on..

He looked out into our office suite..

and he saw Jerry Adair and his attorney Joan Wong being led by Ms. Virginia into my office.

he was stunned.

"What are they doing here?" he asked.

"Oh he's cutting a deal, to stay out of jail...We are playing a game of "Who talks first" said Ms. Yvette, smiling.

In My Office, Bee Bee and Kahlil flanked me..

''Here they come." said Bee Bee.

"This ought to be worth a good laugh."said Kahlil.

"Yeah." I said.

"Okay, we are here...What kind of deal are you offering this time?" asked Attorney Joan Wong.

''Yeah, cause I'm not budging from 14 Millie." laughed an over confident Jerry Adair.

''New Deal ? New Proffer ?? Did I say that?  Oh you're mistaken..." I laughed.

''We know everything...We know you two, You and Mr. Pantel are in on this together..We have proof..

We know that you know Mr. Pantel and that you've known him for years...He was an instructor when you studied Pre-Law, Administration of Justice and Trial Advocacy at University of PENN, You flunked out after two years, we have your transcripts right here... Mr. Pantel helped to get you readmitted into school. You studied Computer Science, which you seemed to have a better apptitude in and graduated just barely from PENN.

Mr. Pantel also got you a job at the Pantel Software Group...You have worked three different times, two six month contracts and his last nine month contract...You undertsand perfectly how this works..And you're not unemployed either..You're currently working on a six month contract job at the Scott software company. A Job he facilitated for you...We have records and people willing to testify to that extent."said Bee Bee.

"So the question is, which way do you want to bend and twist?" said Kahlil...

"I knew nothing about this...Perhaps I should have." said a furious Attorney Joan Wong, angry at herself for not checking her client out fully.

Jerry Adair suddenly looked like he wanted to go into the floor.

Ms. Virginia walked in with Assistant District Attorney Vanessa Stevens.

"This is Assistant District Attorney Vanessa Stevens, she's going to work out a deal with you ...TO STAY OUT OF PRISON!" I said sternly...

Jerry Adair looked as if he'd aged 20 years in just one minute.

"There is a men's bathroom down the hallway..."said Kahlil.

Bee Bee laughed out loud.

IV-

TUESDAY MORNING- COURTROOM B- 10:00 AM

"Court is now in session Adair versus Pantel, Civil Trial." said Judge Coleman.

We stood with our client, Karrie Pantel

"Stop crying Karrie, it's going to be alright."said Ms. Yvette.

"I can't believe my husband hated me so much." said Karrie.

"It's going to be alright." said Bee Bee.

"Yes, it's going to be okay." said Sofia ,passing her a tissue.

"This will be one for the books huh?" I said to Kahlil.

"Oh you know that."said Kahlil.

"Nasty Buzzard.. He's getting a slap on the wrist...He deserves more." said Jade.

"Your Honor, My client would like to address the court." said Attorney Joan Wong.

"Your honor....I am withdrawing my claim...My statements were all false...Mrs. Pantel did not sexually harrass me or at anytime threaten my job status...She was telling the truth...She did not know I was her employee until six months of our time together... I however knew all along who she was...I was fed this information and paid a substantial amount of money to sleep with her...Which I confess was very pleasurable..I didn't lie about that...She was the best I ever had....but I regress...I entered into a conspiracy with her husband to defame her so that he could seize control of her company... I would like to apologize to Mrs. Pantel for the pain and public ridicule I have caused her. For that I am deeply sorry." said Jerry Adair.

''So you admit to perjury in my courtroom?" said Judge Coleman.

"Yes Your honor."said Jerry Adair, crying and shaking profusely..

"Your honor, I am Assistant District Attorney Vanessa Stevens...I have met with both Mr. Adair and Mr. Pantel and they will both be serving from six to twelve months in the county correctional facility and upon release will be ordered to perform 300 hours of community service.. Mr. Pantel has already been disbarred." she said.

"That is fine, case dismissed and Mr. Adair...I don't EVER want to see you in my courtroom again!"said Judge Coleman..

"Wow, two day case.. Niceeeeeee!" said Kahlil.

"It's Tuesday....I'll see you guys Thursday Morning...Starting now!" said Ms. Yvette.

Bee Bee kissed Ms. Yvette on the cheek..

"BEST BOSS EVERRRRRR!" she laughed.

Sofia hugged Ms Yvette too!

"Thank you so much for clearing my name and winning this case...Michael was so right about you...He said you guys were great."said Carrie.

''So what will you do now?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"Oh I've got one more piece of business to tend to...I'll see you later."said Karrie.,

TUESDAY MORNING- The Weekly Meeting of The Board of Directors of the Pantel Software Company.

''And that concludes our weekly meeting." said the Young Vice Chairman. He looked up in surprise.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE,THERE WAS AN ORDER NOT TO ALLOW YOU ON THE PREMISES!" he said.

"The case is over...I was exonerated...And I didn't forget what I told you....You're done here...Go pack up your desk and Security will escort you out... Take his ID Card and his Key card...." said Karrie.
