Caught In The Middle

THE FEDERAL BUILDING- U.S. COURTHOUSE....Walking distance from our building. 

The Federal Interrogation Room was a far cry from our city interrogation room...For one thing...It was clean...It smelled nice..Had cushioned chairs and a nice new wooden table...It had a Television Monitor on the wall.and a calender.....

Brenda Cherry was already sitting there alone when AUSA Todd Dellums walked us to the room.

"She's in there." he said softly..

"Todd, your left eye is nearly swollen shut...and your lip is swollen....The side of your face is discolored..You've been fighting...What happened?" asked my wife , Beatrice, who had been engaged to him before she and I met...

"Long story Bee Bee, you'll hear about it." said Todd silently as he walked away....

 

 Ms. Yvette walked into the room....She looked at her friend and just sighed.....

"Can't take you nowhere girl." she said and smiled.

"We are going to fight extradition." I said.

"We are going to try you here on the embezzlement charges and conspiracy to commit murder charges."said Bee Bee.

"You have a hearing Monday and an arraignment on Tuesday..We are going to try to get you out on bail." said Sofia.

"We've got a 50-50 shot at it." said Kahlil.

Jade said nothing....

''Well How you holding up girl?" asked Yvette.

''As good as I could.. I went to the bank where Dakota told me he had stashed the briefcase and no sooner than I got there...This cop , a Lt. Tragg put the bite on me...He had been staking out the place...but then this Lady FBI agent told him that she had a federal warrant on me that superceded his warrant.  He didn't like that....but this fine as hell young U.S. Attorney told him that it was true, that the federal warrant superceded his....They quarrelled and then they got into an all out brawl...I think the fine young U.S. Attorney got the better of him...Anyway...He got arrested too and he's downstairs in the detention center....I'm being held upstairs on the women's floor." said Brenda.

"Todd and Lt. Tragg were fighting last night.." said Bee Bee.

"That explains his face.." said Sofia.

"And the fact that Lt. Tragg is being held in federal custody means he might not be available tonight at Curleys." said Kahlil.

"That's a good thing." I said.

Jade laughed her head off.

"I really wanted you to come out and celebrate St. Patty's day with us tonight.. If you were in City Court we could arraign you tonight in Night Court and get you out possibly...but with the Feds it's different...Monday you have an extradition hearing and then Tuesday an actual arraignment..." said Ms. Yvette.

"Damn.....I wish the white cop had won the fight." said Brenda. 

 

We all busted out laughing..

While a floor below us in a holding cell..

Lt. Tragg sat in a cell, both sleeves torn off of his suit jacket...the jacket split in the back, his shirt out of his trousers, his tie loosened and his lip swollen, both of his eyes once again nearly swollen shut.. He was waking up from a sleep in an uncomfortable bed....He was being served his breakfast...

He was totally unaware that we were three floors above, talking to the woman he attempted to arrest last night...Who was also going back to her cell.

 

 II-

Thursday Night- Curley's Bar...

Curley's was having their St. Patrick's Day  Special in addition to "Couples Night"

We were all there in celebratory mood tonight...

''Vettie...I hear you guys caught a case.....So did we...and we have a Night Court arraignment on Tuesday....Saturday, after Brunch...why don't you and your team join us at my place in my law library and you can do a little work on it? We'll be working too until 4:00 and then we are all going to dinner in Cherry Hill, how bout it?" said Olivia.

"Olivia, you are my true friend...my sister.....I was thinking of after brunch us going back to our building....but this is better...what do you think guys?" said Ms. Yvette to all of us...

 

"I for one will love it....and I'm not even working the case...Me and Donnie Ray can hang out...catch up on some games upstairs...Maybe have a few brews while you guys work."said Yvette's husband, Gary..

'Working at Liv's place is never really like work...It's so comfortable..it's almost like a vacation." I said.

"I know right? A good Brunch, and then we go over to Liv and Beverly's and begin working on our Extradition case.."said Bee Bee.

"We'll get a much needed head start." said Sofia.

"Yeah we'll need it....What a time to get arrested , the night before Thursday and by the feds.."said Kahlil.

''We could have 'Night Courted' her and possibly of gotten her out tonight.."said Jade.

"I told you that wasn't gonna work for you but so many times." said Danny Ho, her husband.

"Well it's a shame...She could've been here tonight celebrating with us.."said Virginia.

"Yeah...We haven't been here in about a month." said Jetty...

As more drinks arrived. 

"Ouuu More Drinks have arrived." said Olivia.

 

"Pass me a Mojito."said Donnie Ray.

"Pass Me one too!" gushed Beverly.  "It's going to be sooo much fun working with Ms. Yvette, Keith, Bee Bee, Sofia and Kahlil on Saturday after Brunch." said Beverly.

"Our two groups have always worked well together." said Nelson.

"Yes we have." said Josie.

"And I can get some extra studying in." said Paris.

"It's overtime...but it'll be a fun overtime..." said Bresha.

"I can hang out with Donnie Ray and Gary and catch up on some games." said her husband, Tony...

"And me and Virginia can dish." laughed Alfreda, who had become quite fond of Ms. Virginia.

"I think I'll use that time to get a good nap in.."said Rockland with a smile.... 

As more drinks were sent to our area... 

"This is sooo much fun." said Jazzy....
 

"I know....More fun than I thought it would be..." said her husband, Dabnis, holding her on his lap....

"No one telling us , we high fallutin lawyers better not be driving and drinking tonight...."laughed Kayla.

"Pretty hard to tell us anything while he's in jail..."said her husband Ray.

Our entire area exploded in laughter...

"I heard he got in a fight with AUSA Todd Dellums and not only got the worst of the fight but got arrested for assaulting a U.S. Attorney to boot." said Jesica.

"I'm suprized he hasn't been bailed out yet." said her husband Chip.

"He'll be bailed out eventually and the charges dropped...This isn't the first time those two have fought and he's wound up in the federal clink." said Karen.

"I don't know how that man keeps a job..."laughed her husband, B.L.

Natalie was on her husband, David's lap....

"Husband....I'm drunk." she said.

"And I'm horny as hell." whispered David in her ear..

''What else is new?"laughed Natalie.

Brooke and Sean weren't talking or drinking, just kissing like there was no tomorrow.

"Take this...This is a burner phone....it's yours....You can contact me with that...Tomorrow morning...we split up.....we are so far from Houston...they don't have a clue as to where we made out last tracks." he said.

We got a lot of work done......both teams....

It rained like hell that afternoon so we cancelled going to South Jersey for dinner...

We met everybody at Josie's for Super Brunch on Sunday Morning...

With a live band

and lots of good food.....

And afterwords back at Olivia and Beverly's for more preparation 

in their law Library...

Which brought us to today in Federal Court, fighting the extradition of our client in Federal Court.

The Judge walked in...He was twenty minutes late..The Judge walked in....He was quite effeminate... He smiled and greeted everyone.. "Well Hellloooooooo...Good Morning everyone.. I am Judge Reed Reiner...In the words of the great soul singer, Marvin Gaye.. "LET'S GET IT ON...I mean let's begin with this extradition hearing.." he said and laughed at his own joke...

''Ouuu aint he sweet?" said Brenda.

Bee Bee and Sofia laughed and leaned their heads on her shoulders....She was quite enamored of them and they her...

Yvette smiled then looked at me..

"You guys are ready aren't you?" she asked.. She knew we all were..but like a nervous mother she always asked.,

"We are....Ready as we'll ever be." I assured her.

''We might be more ready than the prosecutor." said Kahlil..

Ms. Jade walked in passed Ms. Yvette a piece of paper, which she read as we all took our seats..

The federal Prosecutor,Assistant Us. Attorney  Julia Nichols was pissed...The Judge was late first of all and second of all,  he thinks he's a comedian  This was a serious matter.

She was called in on this case at the last minute and hadn't had much time to prepare...The Feds were used to people not fighting extradition and these cases being handled quickly and easily...This was not the case today....We were much more prepared than she was and our oral arguments were quite impressive...

Judge Reed Reiner was certainly impressed with our preparation and our knowledge of law...So Impressed that he ruled in our favor...Texas would not get Brenda Cherry...She was a Philadelphia resident and the primary crime, conspiracy to commit murder occurred here in Philadelphia...Philadelphia would keep Brenda Cherry...

"Oh My God!! What does this mean?" asked Brenda.....

 

 "It means we won honey..." said Yvette...

"It means you are still our client..."I said.

"You won't be shipped off to Texas.."said Bee Bee smiling.

"We will be representing you." said Sofia.

"Like it or not you're stuck with us."joked Kahlil...

''We have an arraignment hearing here tomorrow..."said  Jade.

''So get a lot of sleep" joked Ms. Yvette.

"Yeah, like I've got an active dance card.." said Brenda as the matrons walked her back to her cell..

"See yall tomorrow." said Brenda Cherry.

We all laughed and waved goodbye...

Across the street from the U.S. Courthouse...a sinister phone call was taking place from Philly to Houston...

"Bad News Boss..The Feds got the girl and the money.....I was just getting up on her when the Philly cops put the bite on her....That was bad enough...but then the feds walked in and snatched her.." came the voice.

"She and the money will be on their way back to Houston."came the voice from Houston.

"No that aint the case...She got some lawyers...and they're pretty good....They beat the Feds in the Extradition case...Philly will try her on the embezzlement case....The Feds will send that money back to Houston after the case is over..What do you want me to do?" asked the man...

"Nothing...Keep your eyes on the case...and keep me informed..." said the man in Houston.

IV-

''Artie you look like hell." said F.O.P. Attorney Louis C. Brown....

"Gee Thanks Louie...It's Monday Morning...I've been in here since Wednesday Night...." said Lt. Tragg..

"Heyyyyyy I got here as fast as I could...Let's get you some breakfast....Me too! Oh and by the way...All charges have been dropped...YOU'RE WELCOME!" said  Louis Brown...

They walked over to a nearby diner....We just happened to be dining there...

 

 

"This is a nice little place isn't it?" said Yvette.

"Yes very nice....I can't believe this place is sooo close to where we work." I said.

"I know...It's just big enough for the rest of the crew to try out sometime." said Bee Bee.

"Yeah, maybe in the summer." said Sofia.

"The Food is good, but then again, everywhere we have been has had great food."said Kahlil.

Jade laughed... "You just like to eat Kahlil."she laughed as her platter was delivered to her..

Orange Juices and Coffees were also delivered to our tables...

Attorney Louis C. Brown and Lt. Tragg walked into the Diner..

"You might want to take that suit jacket off and toss it in the trash Artie." said Louis C. Brown.

Both sleeves were completely gone, the jacket was split down the back....His shirt was out of his trousers and his tie was gone... Add to that,..both of his eyes were nearly swollen shut...His lip was still swollen and the side of his face was discolored.

Lt. Tragg took his jacket off and tossed it in the trash...He looked like hell....And we saw him and he saw us....

"WHAT ARE THEY DOING EATING WAY DOWN HERE?" he asked.

"It's a free country Artie....Sit down order you food ...Don't worry about em."said Louis C. Brown...

But Lt. Tragg ignored him and marched over to our table.....

"WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING DOWN HERE?" he snarled..

 

 "It's a Free Country...." said Yvette as she continued to eat her food...."If you must know...We had a case in  Federal Court ,it was a nice day ,so we walked over here...NOW GO AWAY!" said Yvette sternly.

I  didn't say anything...but I snickered at the sight of him, while taking a sausage off of Bee Bee's plate.

'Stop it." said Bee Bee ,laughing and playfully swatting at me.

Sofia and Kahlil continued eating and snickering at the sight of him...

"You ever consider boxing lessons?" asked Jade..

We all exploded in laughter as we continued eating....

Thin skinned Lt. Tragg was furious at being laughed at......

''Artie come on...Our food is here...Hi Yvette...Kids." he said as they walked back to his table and sat down...

Their breakfasts had arrived.

 

 "This is a nice place huh?" said Yvette.

"Yeah, we really should come back here again." I said.

"Yeah....he won't be here the next time we come here."said Bee Bee.

"I don't think he wants to be here now, all busted up!"said Sofia.

"Nahhhhhh he didn't like us seeing him like that....and he knows we know what happened."said Kahlil..

''At least we don't have to worry about him during the trial." said Jade.

The rest of our meal was uneventful!
