Doughnuts and The Dragon Lady

 An Overcast Monday Morning!

THE OFFICE OF DEPUTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY LESTER BURKE-

Deputy District Attorney Burke was  looking over some recent case files when a very nice smelling and well dressed woman walked into his office,...

It was my wife, famed attorney Olivia Bennett-Alexander, bearing gifts, 

a box of a dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts......His favor..

"Gooood Morning my esteemed Deputy District Attorney...We've really got to stop meeting like this."laughed Olivia.

"Olivia.....Olivia....We meet again...huh? And you know what I like....Krispy Kreme Doughnuts...

Yes..." he said...

"Have a few..." said Olivia with a smile....

"It was nice running into you and your crew down the shore this weekend..

"I understand, one of your associate attorneys owns two beach houses there...You really do pay well." laughed Lester Burke.

"Ha Ha...Not THAT well....They belong to my niece, Beverly's husband.. Nelson East.

His well heeled Uncle purchased those for him when he graduated from law school....You may have heard of his uncle, the former gangster, Fathead Newton... He paid for his college and his law school and awarded him those beach houses to do with whatever....Rather than sell them...our little group of neighbors and colleagues use them when we come to the beach.. This was our last trip to the beach before the end of summer.

We came down Thursday afternoon.. in the two buses I own and our catering van...

 

 

 

 

 

 

"Yes, I see , your entourage was a virtual who's who of local attorneys....heh heh heh....You even had some extra guests... Former ADA Nina Rios and her plus one...She works for the Womens Law center now doesn't she?" laughed Lester..

"Yes she does....She and her boyfriend are the only couple that doesn't live on our block and the only two that didn't come down on our buses...They drove down behind us...but we had an extra room for them...." laughed Olivia..

"WOW, that's nice...Two beach houses with multiple bedrooms...

You had a real nice set up too, lots of food and drink..Thanks for inviting me and my date to sit in...We really enjoyed ourselves." said Lester.

'Did your girlfriend, Ashley tell you that she and I graduated in the same class at PENN LAW? and that we passed the bar together?  We weren't close, but being Black, we knew each other to speak...I understand she works at a prestigious law firm in Cherry Hill.." said Olivia.

"She does...She's a Senior Associate..She keeps trying to get me to come work with her.. but I'm no litigator....I like Criminal Law."laughed Lester... "I can still smell those meats and that seafood and all that good food you guys had at your beach houses,." he said.

"The water was nice....You should have gotten in...Your girlfriend  did...All of our guys got in the water except Jetty." said Olivia..

"Yeah, even Rockland.... You know, marrying your sister in law has done wonders for him....He used to be such a stiff shirt...Now the man has friends, he socializes...He's a pretty alright guy.Thanks again for inviting us to your cookout Friday afternoon." said Lester.

"Oh it was no problem...You know what I say, the more, the merrier..." laughed Olivia..

"Soooooooooooooooo Olivia...What is it that you want?" asked Lester...sampling another doughnut.

"Ummmm these are so damn good." he said, eating another doughnut.

Olivia looked stunned... "Want something? Why would I want something?" Olivia laughed...

"Because it's not often you come around with my favorite doughnuts..counselor...It almost looks improper." he joked as he ate yet another doughnut...

"BECAUSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE DEPUTY!~! AS OFFICERS OF THE COURT AND REPRESENATIVES OF THE PEOPLE...WE SHOULDN'T ACCEPT ANY GIFTS FROM OPPOSING COUNSEL...EVEN DOUGHNUTS....IT'S NOT A GOOD LOOK...IT SMACKS OF IMPROPRIETY!" came the voice of new Assistant District Attorney Mellissa Wharton.

"Oh Nooooooo, you've got it all wrong.. Lester and I are friends....colleagues...You're welcome to a doughnut....Hi...I'm Olivia Bennett-Alexander, Attorney at law." said Olivia, smiling..

"I KNOW WHO YOU ARE.!!.... I'm Assistant District Attorney Mellisa Wharton... I do not want your doughnuts...or anything else you have to offer...Nice try, trying to get some information on the charging document on your case... Not gonna happen... So I suggest you take your doughnuts and depart." she said.

"Heyyyy wait a minute....Let me remind you of something....I'm your boss.. you're not mine....Don't come in here and insult my friend...." said Lester...

"That is only a temporary condition Mr. Burke.... Good Day Mrs. Alexander...Oh and take the rest of your doughnuts....Your Niece and your associates....NOT TO MENTION YOUR HUSBAND...MAY WANT THEM!" she said without cracking a smile.

 "That was below the belt." Olivia said to herself.....She was furious.

Olivia picked up what was left of the doughnuts and left....She heard a lot of yelling coming from the office...Lester was letting her have it! She already knew she didn't like this woman....Not at all.

"Judging by the look on your face, he didn't budge huh?"I said.

"He never got a chance...We got interrupted by that......That new ADA."said Olivia.

"Oh you mean Mellisa  Wharton eh?  She's new...She's the ADA you guys are going to be facing...and our client is going to be charged with First Degree Murder charges and she is asking for the death penalty." I said...

I took a doughnut and munched on it....

"That was the information I wanted from him...." said Olivia..

"I figured you might get a little resistance , so I did my own digging.  I didn't have to spring for doughnuts and coffee either..." I laughed...

"Aren't you just my knight in shining armor." laughed Olivia, taking me by the arm....

Back at our office duplex-

In the adjacent building next door that we owned.. Beverly, Josie and Bresha were busy researching our latest case...Laws pertaining to this particular trial...Predicates and basic law period... as well as looking at autopsy reports , crime scene photos and interviews  with eye witnesses...

"There is no forensic evidence.....and no eyewitness who can positively place our client at the scene..."said Beverly.

''Well there is one man..and we have to look into him deeply..." said Josie.

"Guys I have bad news for you....We can't get him a date in Night Court tomorrow or Thursday...It's all booked up.." said Bresha...

"Oh noooooo...Well...this was bound to happen sooner, rather than later...We're seasoned attorneys..We know how to take charactor witnesses and argue a case before a preliminary hearing jury...We've been getting off easy lately..."said Beverly..

Her husband, Nelson was finishing up in the next room....He had earmarked the 12 jurors we wanted...

"I've got a jury picked that we want....I wish I knew who the ADA was we will be going up against." said Nelson.

"I can tell you that!!  Every body get in here...You too Alfreda... Take Five." said Olivia, who was just arriving.

We had stopped by and purchased more doughnuts....

We all retired to our conference room....

"Ummmmmmmmm I love these....Let me get some coffee for you guys..."said Alfreda.

She poured us each a hot steaming cup of coffee to go with our doughnuts..

"Ouuuuuuu thank you Auntay!! They look delish!" said Beverly...

"They taste delish too!" said Nelson, munching on a chocolate frosted doughnut..

"Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu thank you Liv!" said Josie.

"These Doughnuts and Coffee is just what the doctor ordered." said Bresha.

"Our ADA is over the top!and I don't mean that in a good way....She's a newcomer named Mellisa Wharton..." said Olivia.

"I've got the book on her..." I said and pulled her up on my laptop as we enjoyed the delicious doughnuts and hot coffee..

"Hmmmmmm somebody that moves around that much and doesn't seem to be chasing a dollar is running from something....but what?" asked Olivia.  "She is an ice queen and as mean as a rattle snake...You should have seen how she talked to Lester and he's her supervisor!" said Olivia.

"I'm interested in knowing her deal too!" I'll do a little more digging." I said.

''She's not that important...Our case is what's important." said Olivia.

"Bad news......We can't get our client a date in Night Court tomorrow or Thursday...It's all booked up.." said Bresha...

"Drat...Well The preliminary hearing is next week. Our client will have to be incarcerated until at least next week. You'll finally get to meet the Dragon Lady.|" said Olivia.

THE OFFICE OF PHILADELPHIA DISTRICT ATTORNEY GIL GARCETTI

"Lester, this is highly innapropriate...You're at a Beach party with Olivia, her niece, Yvette Jones and several local attorneys eating and drinking all weekend and then she comes up here with a box of doughnuts asking for information... on the eve of a major trial...It doesn't look good at all...I'm surprised at you!" said D.A. Gil Garcetti.

"THIS IS A BOLD FACED LIE GIL, STARTED BY MS. WHARTON HERE TO SOW DIVISION WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT... I understand she has done this everywhere she has been..... First off...I did not go to the beach with Olivia Bennett and her friends... I was down there with my date and we happen to run into them while there...Her Beach houses is a block from the one I rented... They were having a cookout and they invited us to join...At no time was any business discussed of any type and my date will attest to that....  Olivia came up here with doughnuts and all we discussed was the weekend at the shore.....She never asked me for anything.... And don't forget...She is a personal friend of mine.." said an outraged Lester Burke.

"And how personal is that? She had on a tight skirt with a slit down the middle..." said ADA Mellisa Wharton...

"YOU Lying , manipulative......." snarled Lester Burke , who lunged at Mellisa..

"LESTER!!!  THAT'S ENOUGH!!!  CALM DOWN!!  In Fact, take a few days off , the rest of the week , vacation time..... Mellisa will handle your duties until you return...." said Gil.

"That was the plan all along wasn't it? ....Can't you see Gil?...She's trying to drive a wedge between you and me... She wants my job!!!" snarled an angry Deputy D.A. Lester Burke...

"LESTER!! THAT'S ENOUGH!!!!  "said Gil....

Mellisa Wharton smiled and smirked a little...

TENDER IS THE NIGHT

The end of a long day...

''Donnie Ray I'm sorry I didn't just ask you to look into what I wanted to know... I just figured that was my domain, you know charging documents and finding out who the ADA was going to be..."said Olivia.

"That's alright...We've had a bad day all around...Not being able to night court our client..Having to face a new and hostile ADA we don't know....The only good thing is that once again, this is a Lt. Tragg case...So we know it's weak." I said.

"Yeah, I don't like starting a case out from this kind of disadvantage...Especially a capital case...but we've done it before.." Olivia sighed...

I put my arms around her..

I took her in my arms and kissed her passionately.......

"My contact at the courthouse told me that Deputy District Attorney Lester Burke has been put on Administrative Leave and Mellisa Wharton is the Interim Deputy District Attorney." said Nelson.

"Ohhhhh this is all my fault...I went to see him and that harpie made a bigger deal out of it than it was...She probably eaves dropped on our conversation too." said Olivia.

"She's probably after his job." said Josie.

"I had a case against her recently...She pulls no punches and uses every dirty trick in the book that's legally possible to get her way." said Paris.

"Ohhhhhhhhhhh so she's one of those..." said Bresha.

"Yeah she's not one to be taken lightly...She hasn't been here long, but she's ruffled a lot of feathers in the D.A.'s office....None of the ADA's like her too much." said Tony..

"Ohhhhh she's that type eh?  She doesn't care who likes her as long as the boss man likes her."said Alfreda.

"And he sure does....She's got him wrapped around her fingers...Lunch every day...Dinner and drinks...

and everytime I see her and him, he's ki kiing like a woman..." said Rockland.

 "Sounds like she's got something else, another part of his anatomy wrapped around her fingers." said Yvette.

Her husband Gary laughed..

Keith Jones laughed.

So did Bee Bee.

"Men it's soo easy to draw favor with you guys..."laughed Sofia.

"I don't like her...She comes around our shop, giving orders like she's in charge of us..."said Danny Ho.

"She was in our building the other day with Gil...Glad we don't answer to them."said Virginia.

"Give her time...she'll come up in front of the Legal Ethics Board." said Jetty. 

"I'm glad I don't have any dealings with her and hope I never do." said Jazzy.
 

"I like Lester Burke, he's a friend....I hate to see him caught in the middle of this." said Dabnis.

"Something like this could come between him and Gil forever , even if things do get straightened out."said Kayla.

"Once someone betrays you like that...Things are never quite right." said her husband, Ray...

"That's right.."agreed Jessica.

"Poor Lester." said her husband, Chip.

"She came around our office yesterday with Gil...trying to act like she was the boss., I can't stand her."said Karen.

"Well technically she is." said her husband, B.L.

"I can't wait until Lester returns..He never through his weight around like that." said Natalie.

"I know..Lester is cool.."said her husband, David.

"Ouuuuuuuuuu she's an Ice Queen...I wish she'd go back to New York." said Brooke.

"That's where she's from? Figures!" said Sean...

"I knew her when I worked in Boston....She is originally from here." said Lem. "Very ambitious." he added.

"Glad I don't have to deal with her."said Renee.

She walked in with Gil...She saw all of us sitting in one area, drinking and talking....

"I thought this was a cop bar... apparently it's a lawyers bar." she replied.

"Only on Thursday Night... Couples Night." said Gil.

They sat at a  table a good distance from us and ordered drinks..

"There's that jackass Lt. Tragg who brought the case in....Gil get me an investigator to further look into this case...I don't trust his investigation." she said.

"Don't you have anything good to say about anybody?" asked Gil

Lt. Tragg was sitting in the back with Judge Kelly Ann Mercer, enjoying a soft kiss and quaffing down beers..

"I respect confidence Gil, confidence..." said Mellisa icily..

"Nice place you got here." said Gil, looking around...

"You like it?  Would you like to see more of it and me?" laughed Mellisa as she and D.A. Garcetti embraced in a slow sweet kiss..
