Calvin and Carl

 TUESDAY AFTERNOON-

Serena was surprised....She had been arrested Monday Morning,Charged with murdering her brother in Law, Carl Stevens Jr.....It was Tuesday afternoon and the guard was coming to take her to court for arraignment...This was much quicker than she expected...

She expected two weeks at least...but one day?? 

COURTROOM A- TUESDAY NIGHT- 7:30 pm

ONCE AGAIN!  WE WERE IN NIGHT COURT!

In Philadelphia, Night Court only operates two nights a week....Tuesday and Thursday, Tonight was Tuesday...and fortunately...We got an arraignment date of 7:30 pm. We were the first up.

The Judge in this case would not be the Judge in the actual case....

Lt. Tragg was not there... Night court was too low profile for him...No witnesses...No media..and a bunch of  Judges  and ADA's who were mostly older Judges and ADA's about to retire...It was lightweight. It was in session from 7:00 pm- 10:00 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays...We were quite fortunate to get a date.

The ADA that did show up was not going to be the ADA that tried the case...He had only the basic out line of the case at hand... He basically wanted to go home...So he didn't really put up much of a fight.

 

We presented 30 charactor witnesses , all from the  school district. Serena had been a teacher and a former Principal.

Ms. Yvette, Myself and Kahlil argued that Serena had a reputation as a great School teacher and Principal that was beyond repute...and that she had no prior convictions or any type of an arrest record and was not a threat to the community at large and was eagerly awaiting her day in court to fight these ridiculous charges...

It was good enough because the judge released her on her own recognizance...without bail and without an ankle tracking bracelet...She was free..

"Oh My God!!! You guys are good, real good! ...I'm free again...." said Sirena , almost in tears and hugging each and every one of us.. "What does this mean?"she asked.

"It means you're free until your trial....."said Yvette.

"So keep a low profile.." said Bee Bee.

"Go to a hotel and register under your own name and park your car inside..."said Sofia.

"Or if you have other arrangements...make them." I said..Knowing she did have other arrangements.

"At any rate...We need to see you in our suite tomorrow after you've had some rest....Suite 500, The Bridge Building, Near Penns Landing." said Kahlil.

"She has someplace to stay...With me... We are going to go to her apartment, pack a few more things and then head to my loft.." said  Miles.

Serena looked at us..

"That's fine...Just fine...Park your car in the indoor lot. And we'll see you in the morning...But first..let's get you some nourishment..."said Yvette with a smile.

We went over to Sam Mother's Diner...

Serena and Miles Ellis had Steak and Eggs and Hash Browns...and hot coffee..

We had all had our dinners back at the bridge building.. We settled for  Ice Tea.

"We told you we'd get you out didn't we?" said Yvette,pleased with how fast and efficient we had worked.

"Yes, but I never expected the next day...You guys are really good...Miles said this was your area of expertise...He was correct,"gushed Sirena.

"Now lets hope our expertise exonerates you of these charges." I said.

"This is a pretty bizarre case. "said Bee Bee.

"But we live for the challenges." said Sofia.

"That's right...We'll get you off." said Kahlil.

"The results of your urinalysis has returned...I'll talk to you about it tomorrow."said Jade..

as we all downed our Ice Teas.

After eating at Sam Mother's Diner...We all retired to our homes and Miles Ellis and Serena Stevens 

retired to his loft...

in Brewerytown..

"You're a life saver Miles, hooking me up with your very smart lawyer friends...I like them...I feel confident about this case." said Serena..

"We all just got here...They usually go up to their suite and then come down."said Kayla.

"Here , we've made room for you." said Karen.

"Hello..."said Lee Phillips.

"Hi, you're Miles Friend.."said Natalie.

"Welcome to our building."said her husband, David..

"This is what we call our home away from home." said Brooke.

"We all catch the train in everyday....but this is the only time we see each other....When we eat." said Sean.

That's three times a day...Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner."said Zoey..

"And that depends on who is in court and who is not."said Her husband, Lem.

"Most mornings we at least see each other for breakfast.."said Renee..

"On a good day, all three meals."laughed Tyrell..

"Good Morning" said Nina Rios.

 "Good Morning...Here comes Ms. Yvette.." said Carlos

They were all so friendly and welcoming....

Ms. Yvette and the rest of us all arrived in the cafeteria...

 "Good Morning Serena...Where is Miles?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"He's at his office ....Well I guess your office, the main building...He had to meet with another client."said Serena.

"That's okay...We'll keep you company today." I said.

"We'll discuss your case and where it's going." said Bee Bee.

"And we have a few items to give you."said Sofia.

"It'll make this time a lot more bearable for you."said Kahlil.

"And we'll need you to tell us some things..."said Jade.

"I'm certain you will." said Serena.

Virginia smiled...

So did Jetty...

We all met in our suite ,in our conference room-

Serena was impressed with Yvette....Miles had told her that Yvette was once his protoge...That he supervised her from a pup, straight out of law school, after passing the bar and then one day he left the firm...and now years later...She was a Partner....had her own suite and her own staff...

Virginia, her Office Manager and Consultant, who had once been a top Attorney herself, had gotten in trouble, gotten disbarred and did some time in prison... Paroled, Yvette gave her a prestigous job with her...That was big with her,A Black woman reaching out and helping another Black woman...made her respect and admire Yvette that much more. and of course there was us- Me, my wife Beatrice "Bee Bee"Evans-Jones, Sofia and Kahlil....Four friends and recent graduates from PENN LAW, where Yvette had also attended and  graduated, who had just passed the bar, who she hand picked and mentored and nurtured into the fine attorneys we were.

Serena admired all of this.

and of course Jade...

A former Chinese Homicide Detective ,out of Tokyo....who came to the United States and helped out with a major investigation.... Yvette and her young associate attorneys were instrumental in her getting her American Citizenship...Grateful, she came to work for us as our investigator....

Miles had told her our entire story....

"Serena, we are all friends here and I hope you feel you can trust us....Nothing said here is going to leave this room...The Urinalysis has come back...You were indeed injected with a tranquilizing drug by your brother in law....There was semen from two men in your panties....One is Miles....but the other semen belongs to your brother in law...he apparently had sex with you while you were unconscious..

"Anything you'd like to tell us Sirena...and remember...we have to know everything...because if we know it...The Prosecution knows it...We can't go into court and be surprised." said Yvette.

"Well my marriage was not a good one... I was a school teacher and my husband ,Calvin  was a male nurse in one of my schools...We started off great...but in time, I learned he was a jealous and possessive man and violent... If I smiled at a man or had casual conversation with a man and he didn't know who the man was, he accused me of cheating on him..

"Calvin hit me the first time on our wedding day....He accused me of talking too long to the male florist, who arranged the floral design...He apologized profusely and then hit me again because I was still mad..

He hit me again on our honeymoon...because unfortunately...he had drank too much and uh couldn't perform.

The hitting continued and I would come to work with sunglasses on...Finally I had enough and called the police.

They arrested him and I went to stay with a girlfriend... He got out of jail and came and got me..

He apologized profusely vowing never to hit me again and for about six months, everything was good between us..

Calvin had a problem when I transferred to another school and became Principal...Now I was making more money than him...He accused me of thinking I was too good for him and he hit me again...

His Twin brother, Carl Jr. came in between us and took me out of the house to his house for a few days... But then, he made moves on me, told me he found me quite attractive and had always wanted to date me. He begged me to Leave Cal and marry him...I told him absolutely not!

He made sexual advances on me...I left and went back home..

My husband hit me again and accused  me of coming on to his brother. Meanwhile his brother was sending me nasty texts of his erect penis every day...calling me all times of day, asking me what color panties or bra was I wearing...

I couldn't take it anymore...That's when I went to McCluskey/Cozen/Connor and Pratt..and got a lawyer, Miles Ellis, who got me a legal seperation and  a restraining order...All of that is  a matter of record...He got me a restraining order on Carl Jr. too... I wanted no part of either of them.

Perhaps I shouldn't have gotten involved with Miles either so soon..but he made me feel so comfortable and relaxed and he was such a gentlemen and didn't pressure me and the next thing you know, He and I were involved...are involved....And that's the truth.. That's all of it." said Serena.

"We know your husband, Calvin was in Josie's that night...All night and we have witnesses...but your brother in law, Carl Jr. took Public Transportation and tracked you to Curleys somehow....or was already in Curleys.He walked up on you and Miles and he knocked Miles out , abducted you...injected you with a tranquilizer and sexually assaulted you in your SUV....while you were unconscious....What we don't know is, who drove up on you two and beat the hell out of him, killing him and then put a dent in your SUV and laid him out on the road, making it look like you hit him?" said Yvette.

"I had woke up by then...I was groggy....I stepped outside my SUV and there he was, that nasty buzzard,lying on the ground in front of my SUV...Dead...and my car had a big dent in it...I didn't remember a thing..

"They have your bra too..It has saliva on it...The DNA matches both Miles and your dead Brother in law. Your DNA is on him also." said Jade.

"Ewww, I remember him trying to kiss me and unbutton my top , just before I went to sleep. I was too weak to fight him off....Nasty Buzzard!" said Serena.

Sofia passed her a phone..

"Turn your phone off completely and disable the GPS...Disable The GPS on your Smartwatch and in your SUV... Write this number down... You will contact us by this number from this phone only...Don't call our Business phones or our personal phones...You go radio silent. This is a burner phone."said Sofia.

Bee Bee passed Serena a Portal...

"This a Portal, you can contact us with this...and get daily updates on how your case is going or just to talk if you like... and this way, you don't have to leave Miles's loft to always come over here...You can sit tight.

''Wow you guys are thorough.  You leave no stone unturned."said Serena.

"That's why we win cases.." said Kahlil.

I smiled.

"Have dinner with us....Miles called me...He's going to pick you up here." said Yvette.

"Thank you Yvette." said Serena.

That night at Miles Loft..

"How Did Everything go today at Vetties? " asked Miles.

"Oh it was great....I love her and her entire staff.....And all of your friends that work in that building...They were all so friendly...and that cafeteria ...wow...It's like a five star restaurant.....they have a gym and a spa there...that place is amazing... The meeting with Yvette and her staff was amazing...

They know everything...Everything was put on the table...and they told me some things...Like that son of a bitch brother in law of mine raped me...He injected me with something that knocked me unconscious...I'm thinking an anesthetic of some kind, and he took advantage of me...That's the only way he'd of ever gotten some booty from me...He was disgusting..."said Serena.

"Yeah well somebody beat the hell out of him, killed him, put a dent in your SUV and left him dead on the road..." said Miles.

"I have no idea...who did that....I didn't even know I had been sexually violated until the urinalysis came back and they said that his semen and your semen was found in my panties."said Serena...

So the next few days.....Bee Bee and Sofia hunkered down and did their research...Laws pertaining to this case, simular cases and laws used in those cases, Autopsy Reports, Crime Scene witness statements et al.

The boring work seldom seen on television or in the movies that real lawyers do..

Renee Cantrell-Jones came up and was helping out with the research also...

Under the watchful eye of Ms. Virginia, who supplied them with wise counsel.

While in the next room,. I, along with Kahlil and Ms. Yvette studied the Jury pool and attempted to pick jurors, based on age, education, race, voting record, economic status, et al who would fit this type of trial...

Ms. Yvette sat by herself mostly, trying to work out a trial strategy.......This wasn't the easiest case to decipher..

and interviewed people who had been there that night with Serena's husband.. He had been there until closing at 2:00 AM...but where was he after that? That remained a mystery..

Calvin Stevens was very unco-operative...He wouldn't talk to her at all..

She slapped him with a subpoena.

She went back out to the highway where the events concluded...She made a plaster cast of the second set of tire treads at the scene...

And at Miles loft....

Serena relaxed...safely tucked away from her deranged ,soon to be ex-husband, who no longer had an idea where she was, from Lt. Tragg and his men, who had her apartment staked out, but had no sighting of her for days...

Miles was in hog heaven.....He loved having her here with him...Not just for the sex....but the companionship...Having someone to come home to in the afternoon....He missed Alex and Karla for that reason...He wasn't going to mess this  up, he promised himself.

SATURDAY, We were at the No I.D. BAR for Brunch...so was Miles and Serena

"Hey Vettie, Liv, everybody." said Miles.

"My New Lawyers...Wowww..Fancy meeting you guys again."laughed Serena. 

 "We are here like clockwork every Saturday Morning.. Today after breakfast when our buses come to pick us up, we are going to the Bayside Shopping Center....There is shopping and the guys usually hang out at this Bar and Grille that we've found and then we meet up have dinner and go roller skating...You're welcome to follow us if you like." said Yvette.

"Buses?" asked Serena.

"In addition to my own Law Firm, I own a Bus company...A Small one given to me by a grateful client in lieu of a payment....The buses transpoert my neighbors and friends to the various locations we choose to hang out in and back home safely....Thus assuring us we don't get arrested for a DUI and such and saving wear and tear on our vehicles." said Olivia.

"You and Yvette are quite impressive.. I admire you both."said Serena.

"I admire them too"laughed Gary..."I knew them both when....."he laughed...Having known both women in the beginning when they were young, before they morphed into bosses.

"Ummm let's get on this food while it's hot." I said.

"Yes....I'm good and famished."said Bee Bee.

"Everything smells good and warm.." said Sofia.

"That's because we are here early..." said Kahlil.

"Yes and able to be first in line.." said Jade.

"Yes...let's grab some plates."said her husband, Danny...

"Well glad to see a week has gone by and a client is still free..not locked up."said Virginia.

"That's because Lt. Tragg doesn't know where she is..He can't harrass her like he's done so many others."said Jetty. 

"That goes the same for that husband of hers...He hangs around Josie's and Aqua Bar..So Glad they didn't come in there."said Olivia.

 

"There is a restraining order out against him...He's not supposed to be within 120 feet of her."said Donnie Ray.

"Those restraining orders aren't worth the paper they are written on."said Beverly.

"If Yvette and her people are like us.. They've turned her phone off, disabled the GPS on her phone and her smart watch and locked them in the office safe.  He can't track her....and he doesn't have a clue where she's staying."said Nelson.

"That must be driving him nuts." said Josie.

"I know it is...but he'll see her soon enough....In divorce proceedings." said Paris.

"Yeah and then in court. He's been subpoened for her murder trial."said Bresha,

"Damn what a sequence of events.."said Tony.

"Sounds like one of Olivia and Beverly's cases."said Alfreda.

"Sure Does." said Rockland.

 

"I'm looking forward to Roller Skating tonight." said Lee.

"Me too!" said Matthew.

"I've got a few things I'd like to buy." said Nina.

 

"I'm looking forward to knocking a few cold ones back with the guys." said Carlos.

We ended our night at the Roller Skating Rink...Skating to Classic Hip Hop Beats of the 80's and 90's.

There was three D.J.'s spinning tonight....It was fun.

Night time after everyone had gone home and Serena and Miles had returned to his loft.

"Miles, I've had soooo much fun today.....At Brunch.....In Bayside....Shopping with the girls, Dinner at that spot and roller skating and I've enjoyed being here with you all week...I've really never had so much fun in my life...Thank you ...Thank you dear. This has been the best two weeks of my life.."said Serena.
