For Your Discretion

On this morning, we were relaxing in a downtown coffee shop.. One Jazzy and Kayla had raved about...Our preliminary hearing was tomorrow.
 

They had Jenga blocks on the tables and Kahlil and I were involved in a spirited game while we waited on our coffees..

"I got you homeslice...You're goin down with the next block." said Kahlil.

"Don't count on that...I've been playin this game for years...Goes back to when I was at Howard,,,There..take that." I said.

"Olivia, Karen and I used to play Jenga..I think Liv has a set at her house."laughed Yvette...She looked around...

She really liked this place...

A familliar face walked in, saw them and walked over to where they all were seated..Former intern, newly minted attorney, Lee Phillips.

"Heyyyyyyyy Ms. Yvette, Ms. Jade, Bee Bee, Sofia, Kahlil, Keith how are you guys doing.. I had another big litigation a few blocks away from here...and with it being over...I decided to come and have a cup of the legendary coffee I hear this place makes. This is the second time I'm running into you guys here." she said.

Her boyfriend, Attorney Matthew Akes was with her...

"Hi guys!  She stopped by my place of work ,and we decided to drop by here...She told me about this place." he said.

"You win?.." I asked jokingly..."Hey Lee..Hey Matt..."I said.

"Did I? I won 2.5 million dollars in damages for my client..."said Lee.

"My Baby's a superstar in the making...How are you guys doing?" said Matthew.

" We are doing just fine Matthew...That's the second big litigation you have won Lee....A Nice straw in your cap baby girl...We have trained you well."said Ms. Yvette,

"We have a preliminary hearing tomorrow for our client." said Sofia.

"We think we can win this, even though our client is making it difficult for us."said Kahlil.

"We are close to violating attorney /client privledge, but not too close...just enough to get him off.."  said Yvette.

"Ouu , that's a slippery slope."said Lee.

"It is , but my hubby here thinks he has found a way around it for us..Grab a seat...there is plenty of room for you both."said Bee Bee.

"Here come our coffees." I said.

Our coffees arrived and we all settled down and enjoyed them....

"How do you plan to do that?" asked Lee as we sipped our coffees..

"Our client's alibi is that he was in a hotel with a married woman at the time of the murder...We know that he was...Only he doesn't want this married woman's name used and he doesn't want her called forth as a witness....He has forbade us....Attorney/Client privledge....So we won't bring her name up at all...She's not important....We'll just prove he was at that hotel when he says he was...with witnesses...Her name and identity isn't important."I said.

"Sounds like a good strategy." said Matthew ,giving me some dap.

''What if the prosecution knows her name and they bring it up?" asked Lee.

"Well then that's on them...We didn't bring her up." said Sofia.

"We told him there was a possibility that that could happen."said Bee Bee.

"That the prosecution might already know who his late night guest was and was holding that....but he was adamnit...He didn't want us bringing her name up."said Kahlil..

"On the other hand...I don't want to look like a fool if they do bring it up and either it looks like we were caught by surprise and didn't know or we blew a golden opportunity.  I hate this....If it wasn't for the fact that this guy works for our firm and we were kind of ordered by one of the Partners to rep him...I'd drop him as a client.  I'm not accustomed to letting my clients dictate how I defend them." said Yvette.

"Wow, that is quite a predicament to be in..." said Lee. "I'm up for Jenga...I'll play the winner."she said.

"That would be me..."I said as I happily set up the game.

We set up the blocks and began playing...

"Get him Lee!" laughed Bee Bee.

Sofia chuckled...

So did Kahlil...

Matthew smiled and sipped his coffee... "I never win at that...We have a set at home...She always beats me." he said.

"At Home huh? You too have really cozied up....That's so cute." said Yvette,gushing.

"I think we have a good chance.....Keith's plan is simple and solid...I'm surprised I didn't think of it myself."said Jade.

''Win or lose, after this trial is over...I want nothing more to do with Mr. Flowers...I don't like him...He gives me the creeps." said Yvette.

LATER ON THAT DAY- AT THE BRIDGE BUILDING-

We were informed we had a visitor.

"Vettie you have a visitor."said Virginia.

It was our client, William Flowers.

"Hi Guys , everybody ready for tomorrow?" he asked.

''We are ready. You still don't want Jill Connors name mentioned right?" asked Yvette.

"That's right...especially not now..Robert Connor returned from Boston last night...He came back ahead of Mr. McCluskey and Mr. Cozen..."said William Flowers..

"That would make this a rather sticky situation." I said.

"Maybe he should have kept it in his pants."whispered Bee Bee to Sofia.

"I know right?" whispered Sofia.

"We will not bring up her name..."said Kahlil.

"We won't have to." said Jade.

"Good, you have to understand the situation I would be in....If this got out, I could lose my job, everything...I'm grateful for your discretion." said William Flowers.

"Do you plan to keep seeing her?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"Yes, after the trial we plan to get together....She'll divorce Robert Connor and she and I will quietly get married.  Thank you guys once again for your discretion and I will see you in court tomorrow."he said and got up and left...

"Is he nuts?   If he "quietly marries this man's ex-wife after they divorce...How long does he think he'll have a job at McCluskey/Cozen/Connor & Pratt? He'll be harrassed right out the door...Connor is a vengeful man...A spiteful man...He wouldn't take that lying down."said Virginia.

"He should have kept it in his pants."said Bee Bee

"He should have never put himself in this situation to begin with..."I said.

"Us either.."said Sofia.

''Well we have a way out." said Kahlil.

"Jade do you have everyone subpoenaed and have affadavits on all of our witnesses?" asked Yvette.

"Got em all."said Jade.

"Then we are ready to go."said Yvette.

That night we were all home awaiting the hearing tomorrow.

Ms. Yvette sat alone in her house, in her panties and bra , listening to some Jill Scott music...She hadn't done that in a long while..

Gary came home..

"Good, Good..That's what I like to hear.."said William. Pratt told me you guys are his personal favorites."laughed William Flowers.

COURTROOM B-

To our surprise, Judge Charlotte Peterson, a neighbor and friend of ours was presiding....

"Good Morning, Good Morning,Gooooood Morning...I am Judge Charlotte Peterson and I will be presiding over this preliminary hearing... Can we start with an introduction of the Attorneys...."she said.

"Representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,,Assistant District Attorney, Bruce Greene your honor." he said.

"Also Representing the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Assistant District Attorney Amanda Grayson your honor." said Amanda.

 

 "Mrs. Yvette Jones-Lockwood-Attorney for the Defense your honor." said Ms. Yvette.

Our client, William Flowers ,sat next to Ms. Yvette.

"Keith Jones.,Attorney for the Defense your honor." I said

"Mrs. Beatrice Evens-Jones,Attorney for the Defense your honor." said Bee Bee.

"Mrs Sofia Garcia-Ahmed, Attorney for the Defense your honor."said Sofia.

"Kahlil Ahmed- Attorney for the Defense your honor."said Kahlil.

Both Jade and Ingrid Stevenson...The two investigators ,sat at a seperate table together...

Since this was a Preliminary and not an actual trial , a jury wasn't picked...There were 12 alternate jurors already seated....The Arguments began..

Bruce Greene with Lt. Tragg sitting by him began his argument...  He stated that on and about a certain date, a few weeks ago, Attorney William Flowers strangled one Allana Petrovic to death and dumped her into the Wissahickon creek.  Her body was found before the under current would have drawh her away into the larger creek and out of sight..

He showed the jurors photos of the body floating in the creek and being pulled out by police rescue teams...

He explained the motive...She was at the time of her death, suing William Flowers for sexual harrassment and creating a toxic work enviroment... She was suing to the tune of $6.000.000.000 and she wanted a partnership..  Mr. Flowers was her supervisor and she just recently made Senior Associate Attorney..he said.

He brought witnesses, Attorneys from our firm, McCluskey/Cozen/Connor & Pratt who all attested to this.

He read an affadavit she had filed-"For the past three years I have been an associate attorney working under the supervision of Senior Associate Attorney William Flowers....At first we had a great working relationship...We complimented each other well... I went to Lunches and to Dinners with him and thought nothing of it... At the Christmas Party last year...He came up behind me and hugged me a little too tight and a little too long..

I felt his hardening erection and I saw that it was quite prominent... I chalked that up to the fact that he had been drinking...We all had....

I didn't like how this was going.....So I have approached another attorney...."

"These are her own words.... Had she prevailed...Which she was on the verge of doing...The company would have paid out millions, she would have gained a partnership and I can't begin to tell you what would have happened to him..He would have certainly of been fired.. He had every reason to get rid of her...With her dead..The company lost nothing."  he said.

Lt Tragg smiled ruefully and glared at us.....

Ms. Yvette stood up, she smiled at the jurors...

"None of this is completely accurate...I was the lead attorney representing him in the aforemented case...

On the day before the unfortunate death of Mrs. Petrovic We had cut the amount she would be getting from us from six million to two million and she was not getting a partnership, she was agreeing to leave the company and accept an additional million dollar severence. The only thing she did not agree to was signing an NDA agreement...We were going to meet on that the next day...Only she was dead...It's all here in Defense exhibit A-  "said Yvette, who produced an affadavit.

"Mr. Flowers was ecstatic. Harrassment charges against him were dismissed without prejudice...He had no reason to want Mrs. Petrovic dead...We had come to an equitable settlement amongst all parties."said Bee Bee.

Our Partner, Mike Pratt was called and he testified to as much.

"Mrs. Petrovic's ex husband, picked her up that night after the hearing around 4:00 pm and that was the last I or anybody I know saw of her.." he said.

"Objection, Hearsay." screamed Bruce Greene.

ADA Amanda Grayson put her head in her hands...

"This is going to be a dumpster fire."said Ingrid Stevenson...

 

Jade snickered...

"How is this hearsay when the man is testifying to what he himself witnessed with his own eyes?" asked a shocked Sofia.

Yvette smiled...

"I would tend to agree with Mrs. Garcia-Ahmed....Your objection is over-ruled."said Judge Peterson.

Bruce angrilly kicked the table....

"Well despite all of this, I believe we have sufficiently provided enough motive to hold Mr. Flowers over for trial on charges of Capital Murder your honor."said Bruce Greene.

"Do you plan to offer a defense Mrs. Lockwood?" asked Judge Peterson.

"Yes your honor we do....but due to the lateness of the hour...We would like to offer our defense tomorrow."said Yvette.

"Due to the lateness of the hour....I'll accept that..I'll see everyone back here tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM.   Court is dismissed."said Judge Peterson.

"He's got nothing....This isn't going to trial....We can wrap this up tomorrow."said Yvette.

"Excellent!"said William Flowers who looked in the visitors section and he saw...

Partner, Robert Connor, staring at him steely eyed

and seated next to him was his wife, Jill Connor, with a blank expression on her face.

Sweat began to run down William Flowers back and for the first time....He felt fear!

 

 "Is that who I think it is?" said Yvette.

"Sure is...Mr.and Mrs. Connor." I said.

"What are they doing here?" asked Bee Bee..

"Our client should be wondering that." said Sofia.

"He damn sure should be." said Kahlil.

''Awwwww suki suki now..." said Jade.

"Well would you look at this." said Amanda Grayson, who also spotted them.

"Yeah how bout that....Bring some popcorn tomorrow."laughed Ingrid.

THE NEXT MORNING- OUTSIDE OF COURTROOM B-

We all sat in the waiting area with our coffees..

 

 "Well guys and gals...This is it...This is for the money."said Yvette.

"Yeah this should wrap this whole matter up."I said.

"Hopefully your plan works...None of us counted on Robert Connor coming back early and sitting in on the trial."said Bee Bee.

"Well it doesn't matter...We aren't going to mention his wife at all..."said Sofia.

"Yeah, now we can't...Since she's here."said Kahlil.

"You think the prosecution tipped him off?" Like say a subpoena?" asked Jade.

"No they'd have to tell me through court records of subpoened witnesses and this none. Plus, why would they subpoena her? She'd torpedo their entire case." said Yvette.

Our client, William Flowers sat in the courtroom alone... Sweat running down his back, his body shaking....He was afraid...

Meanwhile , Partner, Robert Connor walked in with his wife, Jill..

He was smiling and they were holding hands.....He waved at us, sitting there, sipping coffee.

COURTROOM B- 9:00 AM

"Good Morning, We will hear from the defense and determine if Mr. Flowers should be held over for trial." said Judge Charlotte Peterson.

Bruce Greene sat with his legs crossed.

ADA Amanda Grayson, who hadn't had a role to play, who felt like she was just window dressing in this court, sat smirking...

So did Investigator, Ingrid Stevenson...She felt that her findings were ignored....She no longer felt a part of this team...

Lt. Tragg sat stoically....He honestly felt that he had presented a good case....He was delusional. 

 "Your honor...Our assertation is that our client did not murder Alana Petrovic because he was nowhere near her." said Yvette.

She showed Street cam footage of Alana getting in a car with her estranged ex-husband at 4:00 pm.

"That is the last known time that she was seen alive."said Yvette.

"Our client was at the Windsor Hotel from 8:00 pm until 3:30 check out.." said Yvette.

I called up The man from the bar, who sold Mr. Flowers a bottle of Champaigne...

Bee Bee spoke to a man at the front desk who said he signed in William Flowers and a young woman

at the front desk at 8:01 pm... He signed them out at 3:30 pm.

Sofia interviewed a woman from housekeeping, who said the couple were late leaving the room...When it was check out time ,She opened the door, the couple was still having sex and she had to leave.

Finally Kahlil interviewed a man from the hotel who swore he signed them out at 3;30 pm.

"Your honor All of this proves that my client was nowhere near Mrs. Petrovic after our hearing that day...There is no way he should be accused of this crime...No way he should have been indicted for this."said Yvette.

"After the testimony I have heard ,I intend to agree...I am dismissing all of the charges against Mr. Flowers...Mr. Flowers you are free to go. Court is dismissed!" she said.

We had gotten the charges dropped and we didn't mention Jill Conners name not once...Neither had anyone else.

"Thank you Your honor,,,,,and thank you my esteemed legal team." said William Flowers

Jade smiled..... 

 Yvette was relieved.. The case was over...They hadn't brought up Jill Connors name at all....and they had gotten their client off..

"I told you  we could win without mentioning her name."I said.

"You were right Honey Bunny....and they knew ,I'm certain Amanda Grayson and Ingrid Stevenson knew about her..."said Bee Bee.

"I'm sure They knew her name....but they couldn't mention her...They would have defeated their own cause." said Sofia.

''Which means at least those two knew he was innocent."said Kahlil.

"And they couldn't dare mention it." said Jade.

Bruce Greene was spinning around like a top....Very frustrated with losing so early ...The Preliminary...It didn't even go to trial...

Lt. Tragg was busy fielding questions about why he didn't question the estranged ex-husband...

He was fighting a losing battle and getting frustrated.

"Good for them....I think Yvette and her team used an excellent strategy...They proved he was where he was and never mentioned who he was with by name...That was brilliant lawyering." said Amanda.

"They gave Bruce a black eye and I'm here for it.Come on girl, let's go get a drink."said Ingrid,laughing.

Robert and Jill Connors left the courtroom ,holding hands....

William Flowers looked confused,,and heartbroken!

 

 "Let's go home guys....good job...I am once again so proud of you all."said Ms. Yvette, smiling..

"It's all over..We are free and clear."I said smiling..

"I am happy it's over...I'm glad we are free of him." said Bee Bee.

"Yesssssssssss.We are no longer walking a tightrope." said Sofia.

"Nope!  And he is left to deal with whatever fallout comes from this." said Kahlil.

"They looked like they were still together....Serves him right." said Jade.

"I no longer care....That's his problem...Let's go home guys.Thanks for your Discretion." said Yvette.

We all laughed loudly.

EPILOUGE-

Robert and Jill Connor are still married, but she did quit McCluskey/Cozen/Connor and Pratt and rejoined the District Attorney's Office.

She and William Flowers never did get back together again... He is confused, wondering what went wrong.

Alana Petrovic's murder remains unsolved for the moment. There is a warrant out for her estranged husband's arrest...It appears he has fled the city....

SATURDAY NIGHT-

For us, it was Party time.! We had another rooftop party at the apartment complex, Me, Sofia, Kahlil and Bee Bee used to live  at on the roof.. Now being hosted by Lee Phillips, Matthew Akes , Nina Rios and Carlos

"Thank you all for coming out.... Make yourselves comfortable...Enjoy!" said Nina.

"Yes, enjoy! It's a Celebration!!!"said Carlos.

Alexa was playing Classic R& B, Classic Hip Hop, Neo Soul and Smooth Jazz....Something for everybody!

"I am sooooo happy you all came. We needed this!" said Lee Phillips..

"I knew we were going to do this again." said Matthew..

There was Burgers and Hot Dogs on one Grill..

Steaks , Hot Sausages  and Corn on the Cob on the Grill next to it..

and seafood on the grill next to that......

Pork and Beans...

Creamy Pasta Salad 

and Cole Slaw....

In addition to Barbecued Wings

And fried shrimp...

Enough Food for everyone there and then some..

"NOW THIS IS A PARRR TAYYYY!"laughed Jetty.

 "This is just what me and my crew needed after the week we had." said Ms. Yvette,,

''Glad they were having this."said Gary.

"Wonder what old William Flowers is doing right now?" I asked Bee Bee.

"Not having as much fun as you and I are."laughed Bee Bee.

"Probably sitting alone in some bar, crying in his beer."laughed Sofia.,

"Wondering what the hell happened. laughed Kahlil.

"He's lucky to be acquitted and lucky he wasn't found out."said Jade.

"I'm bettin he doesn't feel so lucky. said Danny Ho.

"Next time, screw somebody who's not married." laughed Ms. Virginia...

"Works for me!  Hey guys look, I brought drinks " said Jetty, who opened up a chest..

 

"Good Ole Jetty, he always comes through with the drinks." said Olivia.

 

"I'm famished...There is certainly enough food here for everyone..."said Donnie Ray.

"This brings back some sweet memories...huh?" said Beverly.

"It sure does... I'm glad we did another one of these.."said Nelson.

"All we did was get some food together ,program some music and we are here...."said Josie.

"That's true....Now we got representation here again. Enjoying yourself Brre, Tony?"said Paris.

"Oh Yes... Yes..I'm loving it..."said Bresha.

"I told you ,even when you were interning that these were the people to hang out with"laughed her husband, Tony...

"Ohhh this is so nice...Enjoying yourself husband?" asked Alfreda..

"Oh Yes..Most definitely.."said Rockland, glad to have Alfreda and glad to have all of these friends...

"This is soooo nice.. So much food...Oh I love it!" said Jazzy...
 

"Mannnn This brings back good memories...We had great parties on this roof."said Dabnis.

"We did...So nice to bring all of our new friends here with us."said Kayla.

"Yeah, giving them a taste of how we used to get down."said Ray.

''Aye Mios Dios...So much food and drink.."said Jessica.

"We gonna dance it off." said her husband, Chip...

As a few people did some line dances....

"Oh I love this... I was at one of these....Wasn't this much food and wasn't any music. .This is the best one yet."said Karen.

"WOW!!! This is great!"said her husband, B.L.

"This is sooo much fun...I hope we do these more often."said Natalie.

"I do too!" said David.

"Ummmmmmm...I'm full....Let's dance."said Brooke, taking her husband by the hand...

He was holding a burger in one hand..

Zoey was laughing ,watching him...

Soon she joined her husband Lem on the dance floor as they all line danced.. They'd have plenty of time to eat...

Renee and Tyrell were on the dance floor...

"I can't think of a better ending to this week ,can you?" she asked.

"No! Really I can't " he said as they continued to eat, drink and party...

By the time everybody finally left to go home...There was absolutely no food left and only a few sodas..and it was daybreak...Sunday Morning..

It was daybreak, Sunday Morning.. Gary and Ms. Yvette stood outside their house, kissing passionately...

A sweet ending to a bittersweet week.
