Just What We Needed

 

We all, the four of us loved working with Olivia and Beverly...Beverly always reffered to the four of us as their "cousins"

Sofia and I won the luck of the draw today...We were going to work on keeping recently convicted 

Judge Micke Jeffries from being disbarred.  He had been convicted of Bribery and would be sentenced in a few days and he most certainly would be stripped of his license to practice law...We were going to keep that from happening..

Also with us today...was Bresha's husband, Tony Billips..

Attorney Renee Cantrell-Jones

And our Baby Girl, Attorney Lee Phillips.

Rounding out our group was Ms. Virginia, from our office....She was a former attorney herself who had been disbarred...We needed her input.

''Dig in everybody...Breakfast is served.." said Alfreda.

The smell of the food wafted over the entire floor and drug us into the kitchen..

Around the table-

Olivia always started our day with a good breakfast...

"You can think better on a full stomach, not worried about being hungry ." she said.

I agreed!

 And we dug into Pancakes, Waffles, Eggs to Order, Coffee and Orange Juice.

"Don't be shy...This isn't any of you's first time here...Grab yourselves some plates and make yourself a plate of food."said Olivia.  She was always sooo nice,.

 

"You'd better do it before Nelson and I get to the food,."joked Donnie Ray, Olivia's husband.

"He's not kidding.. He and my husband are real chow hounds."joked Beverly, who like her aunt was also warm, welcoming and nice.  Sometimes I forgot how much she reminded me of my wife, Bee Be.

Nelson laughed and stood back, giving us, the guests room to make our plates..

"It's nice having you guys here...We love company." said Josie.

"It's nice having my hubby here.."said Bresha, smiling.

"I know,  It's great to be here."said Tony as he made himself a plate.

And meanwhile at the Bridge Building, where we all worked.. It was business as usual as everybody sat down for breakfast..

Breakfast in our ultra modern cafeteria that some say resembled a five star restaurant.

"Vettie somehow you've got to allow me to pay you and Olivia both for your services...I'd have to pay for this kind of legal service elsewhere."said Judge Michael Jeffries.

 

 "You're not Elsewhere...you're amongst friends.."said Yvette.

"We are going to do what we can to rush your appeal and try to get your conviction overturned."said Bee Bee. She missed me and Sofia not being here.

So did Kahlil...

Jade missed us too as well as Virginia.

Jetty ate quietly...He missed Virginia's legs to feel on under the table. 

"Everybody seems so somber...Lighten up..It's not like we aren't going to see them...They live across the street from us and next door." said Jazzy.
 

"Oh I know...and I know they're doing important work...."said Dabnis.

"I almost went myself...but Liv and Beverly have a packed house..No need in me going and taking up more space."said Kayla,.

"You're good right here with me."said her husband, Ray.

"He loves you sooo much." said Jessica to Kayla.

"He loves something alright."said Kayla...

"Dare we say?" joked Jessica's husband, Chip..

"No we dare not."laughed Jessica.

''Well, the mood is light this morning, despite the seriousness of what's ahead for Vettie."said Karen.

"I know....Appealing any conviction is hard work."said Natalie.

"Definitely not a sure thing." said David.

"And they have so little time if they're going to do it before sentencing." said Brooke.

"Yeah...I'd hate to be in a pressure cooker situation like that." said Sean.

"Well if anybody can operate in that situation,,,,Yvette and Olivia can."said Zoey.

"They've both had so many tight and controversial cases."said Lem.

"When I was a bailiff...I used to see them both in court with their teams winning against the odds...I never bet against them."said Tyrell.

"I've been with them for a lonnnng time...They know about pressure." said Paris.

"I miss my baby."said Matthew..

''She's learning new stuff...She'll be alright."said Nina with a smile.

"She's going to be our MVP soon."laughed Carlos...

The day was beginning!

II-

We were all in their massive law library...

Sofia and I had case files and a laptop... Lee Phillips sat in between us...

 

Olivia had us studying prior cases where disbarments were challenged and what basis.

 

Donnie Ray looked on almost with pity for us..

Beverly and Nelson  had case files and laptops.. Renee sat in between them...

It was the same with Josie and Bresha and Tony...All studying past cases, like cases and predicate pertaining to them...

This research was good work and good training for them.... With the exception of Olivia...no one here had actually challenged anybody's disbarment...let alone been successful...Olivia had been successful three times and failed only once..

Virginia studied with us....I know she thought about her own disbarment...

Olivia whispered in her ear...

"After this is over girlfriend...We are going to work on getting your license back...You just say the word." said Olivia quietly.

Virginia smiled... Olivia and Yvette were her good friends... Her Sisters...She loved them both dearly.

And in her suite in the Bridge Building, Yvette had a smaller audience.
 

 

Armed with her laptop ,she held court... She had her two trusted Lieutenants...Bee Bee and Kahlil

studying the case at hand...

"I've found several discrepancies Ms. Yvette...Things Jhett Garland should have jumped on....If I found them, why didn't he?" she said.

"That's what we are looking for...Good work..."said Yvette.

"I found a few things....where the Prosecutor ran wild and Jhett didn't catch it..Look!"said Kahlil.

"His mind must have been elsewhere..." said Jade.

"Yeah, on panties....That's the only thing I can guess has got him off his game..He's brilliant...I've seen him in action...He wouldn't have made mistakes like this." said Yvette.

She looked up and a young woman was standing in her conference room..

It was Toni Robinson!! She had seen Yvette and her friends in Curley's that night and had just missed talking to them....

ADA Bruce Greene had offered to tell her where Yvette and company worked if she went home with him that night.  She didn't go home with him...But she did promise to go out with him at a later date..

He gave him and gave her Yvette's work address.

"Ms Yvette...I'm sorry...Your door was open and there was no one in your front office,so I walked in...My name is Toni Robinson...I recently graduated from law school and just passed the bar...I was clerking for Jhett Garland...I'm here because he threw that case..."she said.

"HE WHAT?" said Yvette.

She passed Yvette a piece of paper...

"Those are the names and addresses of two witnesses....Two witnesses who could have vouched for Judge Jeffries...One has a bit of a criminal record....but he would have deep sixed the prosecutions chief witness, who was lying... The other guy would've backed up the judges story of being drugged and being out of sorts in that bar that night... They could have cleared the judge and he refused to call them." she said.

"Jade find these guys....bring em here."said Yvette.

"I'm way ahead of you boss lady...." said Jade.

"Young Lady....You were just what the doctor ordered....You were just what we needed."said Yvette.

"I'm probably going to be in need of a job....but I couldn't sit by and let this go down like this..Judge Jeffries is a good man and he's being set up." said Toni Robinson.

III-

We all were home after a work day...

After we all got home that night..We were all settled down with our significant others.. What better way to end a long work day like we had  than to be making love.?

Bee Bee was wearing another sheer see through Baby doll.....She had just taken a hot shower and walked into our bedroom..

My eyes popped out of my head..She had on a new bra and matching panties that I hadn't seen before and she smelled heavenly..

The same was next door at Kahlil and Sofia's house..

At Ms. Yvette and Gary's house

"I TAKE IT THAT'S ANOTHER YES!" she said...

"LAWD!!" he mumbled as they made sweet love..for the next EIGHT TO NINE HOURS. He was deeply in love in a way he had never been before...Virginia loved that a man loved her this much....

Such a nice night! for some of us anyway!

"Baby, we got problems.." said Jhett Garland..

"WHAT PROBLEMS?" asked Lisa Jeffries...

"You talk to your husband lately?  He fired me as his attorney."said Jhett.

"So?" said Lisa Jeffries..

"So , he's hired Yvette Jones -Lockwood and her team...They're going to appeal his conviction and his disbarment as early as tomorrow and I've been subpoenaed ,along with two witnesses...The two witnesses I never called..We gotta do something...This whole thing is falling apart." said Jhett.

"Just chill!  Let me think!." said Lisa Jeffries...looking worried for he first time..

IV-

COURTROOM E- CLOSED SESSION-

We didn't waste any time...The next morning we were in court!

That next day we met with Judge Kelly Anne in a closed court...She was hearing our arguments for an appeal of Judge Jeffries Conviction...

We sat with our client in a non-jury setting...Just us and Judge Kelly Anne.

Judge Jeffries sat with us...

 

 Yvette argued that we had proof of several mistakes and mis-steps the prosecution made during the trial

that defense attorney Jhett Garland either didn't pick up on or intentionally let lapse...

I smiled. I was armed with information to repeal his disbarment if necessary ,but that wouldn't be necessary today...He hadn't been disbarred yet and after this hearing, it didn't look like he would be.

My brilliant wife Beatrice had receipts...She talked about and showed the trial transcripts that showed exactly what Jhett Garland had let slide and she had predicates from other trials and like cases to back up her arguments.

Sofia looked at her lifelong friend and sister with such adoration and pride..

Likewise her husband and my buddy, Kahlil found instances where the prosecutor ran wild and loose with "facts" not found in evidence and again, Defense Attorney Jhett Garland could have objected and did not.

Jade smiled..

Assistant District Attorney,Kevin Bellamy was sweating bullets...he insisted he had done nothing wrong or improper....but under the weight of our arguments...That didn't look so certain.

The nail in the coffin was The two witnesses, Two witnesses that were never heard from during the trial

who gave testimony that would have acquitted Judge Jeffries....

Finally Yvette called Jhett Garland to the stand..

The usual cool dapper playboy Attorney was anything but today...He was sweating so hard...You could see the water ring in the back of his suit...

"Mr. Garland...This case was tailor made for you....You had one witness who could have debunked Judge Jeffries main accuser , who we now know perjured himself...WHY IN GOD's NAME DIDN'T YOU CALL HIM?" asked Yvette.

"He He, He had a criminal record...He wouldn't have been credible." explained Jhett Garland.

"He had three arrests for domestic violence....No convictions...and his wife dropped the charges...That's not a criminal record.... I've had witnesses, who've had worse and I've used their testimony...I don't know an attorney who wouldn't  have used his testimony...."said Yvette...

"Alright!!! Alright!! Yes, I threw the case... I've been having an affair..an Affair with the Judge's wife, Lisa.... We're in love...We've been seeing each other for months now...She said once he was out of the way..Once he was in jail..She'd divorce him and we could run off together.." Jhett Blurted out..

"WHATTTTTTTTTT? YOU WERE SLEEPING WITH MY WIFE?   YOU BASTARD!!  I COULD KILL YOU!!!" screamed Judge Jeffries.

"LIAR!! HE'S LYING!!  I NEVER SLEPT WITH HIM AND I NEVER TOLD HIM TO THROW YOUR CASE....MICHAEL   YOU'VE GOT TO BELIEVE ME....HE'S LYING....OHHHHHHHHH

MY GOD!  HE'LL SAY ANYTHING TO SAVE HIS ASS...OUUUUUUUUU YOU WEAK KNEED 
LIAR...MICHAEL...I SWEAR  I WAS NOT UNTRUE TO YOU!" screamed Lisa Jeffries..

"GET AWAY FROM ME YOU, YOU HARLOT!!! OHHH!" screamed Judge Jeffries... "THAT EXPLAINS A LOT...WHY EVERY NIGHT WHEN I CAME HOME THERE WAS DIFFERENT PILLOWCASES AND BED SHEETS AND THE BEDROOM SMELLED LIKE AIR FRESHENER AND THE SHOWER WAS HOT AND WET!" screamed Judge Jeffries who was beside himself with rage..

Kahlil and I did our best to constrain him...

Judge Kelly Anne had heard enough.....

"I am reversing Judge Jeffries's conviction....It is the court's opinion that he is innocent of all charges!!!!....You are free to go Judge Jeffries." said Kelly Anne.

"Thank you your honor... and Yvette, Keith, Bee Bee, Sofia, Kahlil and Jade, thank you too..."said a relieved Judge Jeffries.. 

And not a minute too soon.  A day later and he would've been disbarred and sentenced to up to ten years in prison. Talk about nick of time!

 "You're so welcome... I'm so sorry you had to go through all of this." said Yvette.

''Wow...we were training to possibly overturn his disbarment and as it turns out, He won't be disbarred." I said.

"Tomorrow, he would have been sentenced....Wow....We got this reversal just in the nick of time."said Bee Bee.

"Where is Toni?...She really is the hero of the day." said Sofia.

"She probably was scared to come." said Kahlil.

"She's probably out of a job right now."said Jade...

"I think I can take care of that for her." said Yvette.

"MICHAEL!! MICHAEL....I NEED YOU TO LISTEN TO ME!!HE'S LYING!!  I NEVER SLEPT WITH HIM AND I NEVER TOLD HIM TO THROW YOUR CASE....MICHAEL   YOU'VE GOT TO BELIEVE ME....HE'S LYING....OHHHHHHHHH

MY GOD!  HE'LL SAY ANYTHING TO SAVE HIS ASS...OUUUUUUUUU YOU WEAK KNEED 
LIAR JHETT!!...MICHAEL...I SWEAR  I WAS NOT UNTRUE TO YOU!" screamed Lisa Jeffries..

"PACK YOUR THINGS AND HAVE THEM OUT OF THE HOUSE BY THE END OF THE WEEK!!!"was all the Judge would say...

What a day this had turned out to be.

TWO NIGHTS LATER-CURLEY'S BAR- COUPLES NIGHT- 

 "Let me first start by ordering a round of drinks for my supportive husband and my lovely staff...They make me look good everytime they enter a courtroom."said Yvette.

"Cheers"said her husband, Gary...

"Thank you Ms. Yvette" I said.

"Thank you Ms. Yvette" said Bee Bee.

"Thank you Ms. Yvette"said Sofia.

"Thank you Ms. Yvette"said Kahlil...

"Cheers and Thank you." said Jade.

"Thanks Yvette." said Danny Ho.

"Ouuuuuuu thanks."said Virginia.

"Cheers."said Jetty.

"And a second round of drinks to my good friend and sister from another Mister...Olivia Bennett-Alexander and her lovely staff who helped prepare my team for the successful hearing."said Yvette.
 

"Ouuu thank youuuuuu....I'm glad you guys were able to get Judge Jeffries conviction vacated and that he didn't get disbarred."said Olivia.

 

"Yall did in one day what his attorney failed to do in two and a half weeks of trial."said Donnie Ray.

"I heard he purposely through the trial.  He was having an affair with the Judges Wife."said Beverly.

"The Judge put her out on the street."said Nelson.

"Both of them , His wife and Jhett Garland will probably face disciplinary action from the Bar Association, if not disbarment."said Josie.

"Well they are free to carry on now."laughed Paris.

"I heard she doesn't want anything to do with him." said  Bresha.

"I hope it was worth it..."said Tony.

"It wasn't....You can believe that!" said Alfreda.

It cost her her marriage and his reputation and like you said both are facing disciplinary action from the bar association,."said Rockland.

"That was a diabolical plan...Setting her husband up for prison and sleeping with his lawyer."said Jazzy.
 

"Sounds like something out of a movie or a TV show."said Dabnis.

"It does...I'd watch it." said Kayla,laughing.

"I wish we were having a round of drinks bought for us."laughed Ray...

"I know right?" laughed Jessica.

"I suppose the Judge didn't feel like coming out tonight."said Chip.

"No...he and his wife have split up....Even though his conviction was tossed out...It's kind of bittersweat."said Karen.

"Yeah it is.." said B.L.   "Hey where is that girl?  The young lawyer who blew the whole thing open?"asked B.L.

''I don't know...I haven't seen her since Monday..but when I do see her...I have a few lines on jobs for her.."said Yvette.

"Her name was Toni....Ton Robinson...I saw her yesterday...I told her you all were in a closed court session with Judge Jeffries.."said Natalie.

"By now she's got to know you guys were successful....Got his conviction thrown out."said David,.

"I heard the Judge goes back on the bench Monday."said Brooke.

"WOWWW!  I'd at least go to Disney World." said Sean.

Everybody burst into laughter.

"Well hopefully when everything cools off...Judge Jeffries will come out and allow us to toast him."said Zoey.,

"Yeah...he's been through a lot..."said Lem...

"Well, I got a good education out of it."said Renee.

"Yeah, stuff they don't teach in law school."said Tyrell.

"Yeah....but who thinks they are going to be disbarred at any time?" said Lee Phillips.

"True dat." said Matthew.

"Well I'm glad you were able to learn even more Lee."said Nina.

"Here comes our drinks...Let's toast to Judge Phillips.."said Carlos.

Everybody raised their drinks in a toast...

Bruce Greene  sat by himself....He wondered where Toni was tonight....He coudn't get her to come home with him...Even after he gave her the information she wanted...She was like all the others he grumbled..a user.

In a corner, Judge Kelly Anne and Lt. Tragg sat kissing passionately....oblivious to everyone else.

A Typical Couples Night at Curleys.....

But miles away -

in a law office....

The lifeless body of Attorney Jhett Garland lies on the floor of his office.. He'd been bludgeoned to death!
