He kept wondering where he knew this man from ...He looked familliar...He saw that he had been at St.Johns University the same time Olivia's associate, Nelson East had been there..He imagined they were friends...They had taken and passed the bar at the same time and had been sworn in together..

This was the connection to Olivia's group.

Bruce hated to prosecute a fellow attorney...but he could certainly understand his motivation...he had been blackmailed by an investigator at his former law firm for both embezzling and for romancing the partner's wife....He had been a degenerate gambler...He had paid back the four gamblers he owed money to and had joined Gamblers Anonymous...and he had still lost his job...Part of Bruce felt sorry for this brilliant, yet flawed attorney...Here was somebody who had it worse off than him..

.Bruce stared out his window...The mid day sun was shining bright through the overcast.

"I'm telling you Liv, I didn't do it...I didn't kill him.." said Colin Pollard ,our client..

"I'll tell you about the last time I saw him.. It was three days before he was eventually found dead." he said, recreating for us what happened.

CHINATOWN-LATE NIGHT

Over top of Eddie Lee's great Asian fusion restaurant was a floating , all night casino, that featured  several card games, peopled by High Rollers, Asian and Russian Gamblers and a few well heeled African-American gamblers.. The cops knew about it, but turned their heads because Eddie Lee kept the neighborhood quiet...No Drugs and no killings.

"And that is yours." I said as I paid off the last of the four  people I owed money to.

"Wow Counselor...How'd you get so flush? A Settlement from a big court case?  I thought a couple of these guys were going to find you and break your legs..."said Eddie Lee.

"That wouldn't bode well for me in court...I had a big win in court and so...I'm using my percentage to pay off my debts." I told him..

"That's a good practice...Now, until you learn to play cards better, I'd suggest you keep your distance between yourself and this room."laughed Eddie Lee.

"Eddie I'm going to take your advice and limit my visits here to your great Asian Fusion eatery downstairs...No More gambling for me.."I laughed, relieved.

I smiled and walked down the stairs into the restaurant..

I didn't realize I had been followed..

"I sat down in the restaurant and ordered a fine meal and a bottle of Saki...I felt good that night... I wasn't prepared for the man who sat down with me."

"Hello Counselor...You had a good night tonight." said the man..His name was Richard "Rickey" White, A Private Investigator who occasionally worked for my law firm.

''What do you want Rickey?" I asked.

"You paid off those four gamblers you owed money to...What was it? 25K a piece...That's 100 large..wow.. 100 large that you embezzled from company funds...wowwww..."he laughed.

"I paid you 25k too, last month and I'll have you know that I've replaced that money, every last penny...So don't think you're going to continue to blackmail me."I said.

"Oh you out maneuvered me with the money...You were very clever...but you can't outmaneuver me on this.." he said.

He pulled out some glossies..

"There was a photo of Aimee Stewart, the wife of the Black Partner....Chess Stewart....

"That's you and one of the partner's wife, Aimme Stewart isn't it?    Wowwwwww! You two were Hot and Heavy !!!  And I've got the negatives in a safe deposit box..  You can have these...I have plenty more copies where this comes from..."he laughed.

I wanted to kill him right then and there....but I did not..."

"YOU BASTARD...YOU'RE GOING TO DRAIN ME DRY!  WHAT DO YOU WANT?"I asked , enraged.

"100 large...You've got one week to get it for me... $100 large and I'll tell you where my safe deposit box and leave a key and you can get the negatives and I'll be out of your life for good..  I'll be on my way to Brazil  or maybe Dubai to start a new life..HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...Good Night Counselor...Enjoy your meal." he laughed.

"And I swear...that was the last time I saw that creep..." said Colin. 

"Thursday Night we know and we have lots of witnesses that you were in Curleys with us."said Olivia.

 

"And we know you came home with us..."I said.

''And Ginger came by at 3:00 am and spent the rest of the night with me.. I know you guys didn't know that...Uh I know she's my alibi...but could you uh defend me and not put her name out there...The uh Prosecutor, Bruce Greene is her ex and it would really uh make things uncomfortable for her."said Colin, sheepishly.

"You know...We can say we saw you turn in at a little before three, but no one here can honestly say you were there all night...I know you were...but any good ADA is going to want to know if you left from the time we last saw you until the afternoon when you finally showed up."said Beverly.

"Beverly is right... Ginger is a perfect alibi for you."said Nelson...

"Her relationship with Bruce Greene has nothing to do with nothing. They 've broken up..."said Josie.

"Her testimony is the difference between you spending the rest of your life behind bars for something you didn't do or you walking free."said Bresha.

"They're right Colin...but as your attorneys we won't go against your wishes...but it's in your best interests...You should really give this some serious thought...Where is Ginger?" asked Olivia.

"She's at work...She's dropping by here tonight." said Colin...

I looked out the window...

The Mid Day Sun was still shining.

That afternoon after work...Everyone had the same idea. We would meet and dine at our local Steak and Seafood joint.

 

''What a nice way to end the day." said Olivia.

 

"I love this place....Chris Thompson is one of the co-owners..." I said.

''He and Chess own it....I heard Rollie Rollerson gave them feed money to establish it."said Beverly.

"That damn Rollie, he's connected to everything but the neon lights."laughed Nelson.

"Here comes our food...I ordered Seafood."said Josieteak, A e

"I ordered Steak." said Paris..

"I ordered Steak last time...I'm going with Seafood tonight." said Tony.

"It's just nice to get out...I love it around here."said Alfreda.

"I knew you would...That's why I bought the house on our block."said Rockland. 

 "It always smells so good in here.." said Yvette...

"I'm glad we didn't eat dinner at work today."said Keith Jones.

In our law library,  Beverly, Josie and Bresha were busy doing research , studying laws, predicates and laws and rulings from simular cases...

Colin watched them , The three women were all beautiful...smelled great and very astute,....he had heard how they came to trials ,always prepared ,surprised by nothing and always articulate...He loved that...

He observed Nelson right next door...looking at potential jurors, weighing in on their Age, Race, Political affiliations, Employment history, etc. And doing a psychological profile of them, just like the two of them had learned in law school...Something he did himself before a trial or litigation...

Olivia had these guys trained well...No longer they rarely if ever lost a trial.

He entered our conference room where he had me talking to Olivia.

''Aimee Stewart lawyered up and wouldn't talk to me..Neither would her husband, Chessly....In fact the've lawyered up...They hired H.Stanley Stanlison...who basically told them to dummy up." I said.

"Wellllll if they won't talk to us outside of court...They'll talk to us in court." said Olivia.

"You want me to deliver the subpoenas?" I asked.

"No, they'll see you coming...I'm going to deliver this one myself...These two I should say." said Olivia.

Colin laughed... He would love to be there to see their faces....

Another overcast afternoon with a bright mid day sun in the sky..

Olivia walked into town, heading for the building that housed...CLIMBER/HOROWITZ & STEWART.

Olivia marveled at the building as she walked in and took the elevator...

She was impressed with the office...The Best looking office she'd seen to date.

Olivia turned heads as she waltzed through the office..

Olivia walked into the office quietly...She was in luck...Chessly, his wife Aimee and their Attorney H.Stanley Stanlison was in the office.

''Well the Gangs All here." she said with a smile.

"Sooooooooo the great Olivia Bennett-Alexander....We finally meet....I've followed you in the media..Needless to say...I am a fan, even though you are defending my murderous former associate." said Chessly Stewart.

"We spoke to your husband yesterday....Didn't he tell you to talk to our lawyer?" asked Aimee.

"He did and I'm glad you're here counselor Stanlison." said Olivia .

She passed a subpoena to Chessly

and another to his wife Aimee.

"This is a legal summons for you both to appear in court as defense witnesses...It's all perfectly legal. But don't worry...I'll be there with you." said H.Stanley Stanlison..  "Anything else Olivia?" he asked with a smile.

"That's it...I'll see you good people in court." said Olivia. She quietly turned and walked out....

"Olivia huh?" snarled Chessly...

"She's a smart woman and a damn good attorney." said H.Stanley Stanlison.

Olivia headed towards her car...
