Hard Luck Cases

As an Investigator and former Homicide Detective...I as well as anyone could look at a case and determine what was sympathetic to a jury as well as any lawyer..

Jade felt the same way...

Which was why for the first time..I would not be working with my wife, Olivia....but Yvette Jones, her good friend..

Yvette and her team of

Attorney, Beatrice "Bee Bee" Evans  and

Attorney Khalil Ahmed... leafed through case after case of people convicted of the more serious crime of murder, simply because they took part in the initial crime...Usually a hold up...

The perpetrators were not just African -American and Latino...There were Whites and Asians too...A lot of these guys were career criminals like the late Vincent Olipedo, who would have wound up in prison one way or another anyway...

"We gotta find somebody who isn't a hard luck case" I said...

''Somebody a jury and the Supreme Court might feel sorry for.."said Jade..

"Yes, somebody young...a first offender..."said Yvette.,..

"Good Luck with that...Kahlil and I have sifted through 50 cases.."said Bee Bee..

"And All of these people would have wound up in prison, one way or another.."said Khalil..

"How bout this one...?" said Luna, the para-legal...

She pulled up the case of a young girl, who was 17 years old...Just weeks from graduating from high school, Was driving a car with her boyfriend and another guy....

Both guys decided to hold up a Supermarket while she waited outside...Two people were slain in a subsequent gun battle inside the store...A customer with a gun who tried to stop them and the manager, who also had a gun...

Despite the fact that she never went inside the supermarket and swore she had no idea her boyfriend and his pal planned to rob the supermarket...The three were tried and convicted...One was given a light sentence of three years because he co-operated and has since been paroled..Her and her boyfriend were sentenced to life...She's already served 10 years to date...

"She's earned her GED and gotten a Bachelor's Degree since she's been imprisoned and she's got a good chance for parole this spring.."said Luna..

"This is our case...Our face case.."said Yvette...

''A lot more sympathetic than Vinnie Olipedo.."said Bee Bee..

"This is our case.."said Khalil..

"OUTSTANDING!"said Attorney Benjamin Pena, who was co-ordinating this suit....

We had all been working the past three days in the space the ACLU had given us in the Philadelphia Suburb of Bayside...

Across the room from us, my beautiful wife...Olivia Bennett-Alexander

Was holding court..

"This appeal was as good as any appeal I'd seen...You two wrote an excellent appeal and gave a pretty convincing argument.."said Olivia..

"I know you guys feel bad, I know you feel bad because you couldn't save Vincent Olipedo...But he wasn't a sympathetic client...He was already serving a 99 year sentence for a murder he did commit....Then he foolishly escapes with two other hard luck cases and holds up a sporting goods store.. And your victim...A rookie cop on his second week of duty, newly married...baby on the way...He was a very hard sell.."said Beverly..

 Keith Jones was really distraught....After arguing unsucessfully before the State Supreme court , he had pleaded with both the Lieutenant Governor and the Governor to no avail...

Sofia Garcia felt the same way...Arguing before that State Supreme Court had drained her emotionally, despite the fact that they had forced a tie...3-3...Which was broken by the Chief Justice, who opposed them...She watched the last bit of life drained from the body of Victor Olipedo and felt like such a failure..

"Look you guys....Maybe I'm speaking for myself..But I don't think Liv, Bev or myself could have saved your client.."said Nelson..

"He's speaking for himself.."said Beverly...

Which brought guffaws of laughter from her aunt, Olivia..

who had been helping them

Beverly's husband, Nelson...and finally,

Keith Jones and Sofia Garcia...

The six of them were busy looking of precedents in which this law had been challenged and studying the cases, while making a few revisions to the original appeal that Keith and Sofia had drafted...

"Next time you face those Supremes...You two won't be alone...You'll have all of us...by your side and a much better case.." said Olivia...

"Not a hard luck case.."said Keith Jones..

''Right...Not a Hard luck case.."said Beverly..

''Bev and I were proud of all of you..You and Sofia in Harrisburg fighting the good fight.."said Olivia..

Smiling at Keith and Sofia..

''And Our Josie..working with Ms. Yvette, Bee Bee and Kahlil on the Willie Childs Murder Case.."said Beverly

Smiling at the thought of what they had all been through....

"Crime of the Century." said Nelson, smiling as they got back to work...

"It wasn't easy work, but we worked well together...whether split up in groups or working together...

We ate Lunch and Dinner at the Restaurant across the street from where we worked...

Olivia sat on my lap and leaned her head into my shoulders...

Beverly and Nelson ate quietly together...

As did Keith and Bee Bee

Sofia and Kahlil...

Gary Lockwood , now off from work drove out to eat with Yvette

who was glad to see him..

They spent the whole meal kissing...

 It was obvious to us that Attorney Ben Pena and his para-legal, Luna , were more than colleagues..They were lovers...

They didn't hide it...They kissed each other passionately..

Josie leaned over and whispered to Jade...

"Looks like we've got company.."

Jade peered out of the side of her eye and saw

Ice Agent Shawn Columbsy, sitting quietly, but staring at our area...

"What is he doing here?" asked Jade..

"Our case has nothing to do with immigration...and all of us are American Citizens aren't we?" asked Josie..

"Yes, so it must be something..."said Jade..."Check your vehicles when you leave.." she said to both me and Gary...

Ben Pena addressed us...

"Guys...it's Thursday...You've all been working very hard this week...Take tomorrow off...I'll see you guys Monday Morning.." he said..

"Great...A three day weekend.." said Beverly...

"We can catch up on some sleep.."said Nelson..

''Among other things.." I said, Eyeing Olivia salaciously...She rubbed my arms and giggled..

"Hey Sunday....Jazz Brunch at Josie's ..You coming?" asked Olivia to Yvette..

''What you think sugar?" asked Yvette to Gary...

''Spend the Weekend with me and it's a date.."laughed Gary...

"Bev, Nelson, Josie..We are going to Stoley's tomorrow night...Coming?" asked Bee Bee...

 "Yeah we'll be there.." said Beverly..

 ''This will make up for the last time, when you guys couldn't make it.."said Nelson with a smile..

''We've earned some down time..."said Josie.

''Sounds like a plan.."said Keith Jones..

"Hey, I just saw that ICE Agent guy, Shawn leave out the side door...What is he doing here?" asked Kahlil..

"I'd like to say just eating...but not when we are involved."said Sofia..

''I saw him too." I said.

"Check your vehicles.."said Gary...

We did...There were no tracking devices on any of them...

Keith, Bee Bee, Kahlil,Sofia and Jade were dropped off...

 He parked the Mini Bus in the indoor parking lot...just for safe keeping..

Yvette and Gary decided to spend the weekend at her apartment..

and the rest of us..

 We headed home..I parked the SUV in the garage...

Olivia, Myself, Beverly and Nelson

went home...

Josie had packed a few things and had been staying with us...She still was...

Still, I wondered why ICE Agent Shawn Columbsy was hanging around...His being around was no co-incidence..But our case had nothing to do with immigration...

This explained why there was no tracking devices on our vehicles..We were not his targets...

His Target was miles away in Bayside...

At the loft of Luna...She and Attorney Benjamin Pena was kissing passionately...

By now the bed was squeaking and the headboard was slamming against the walls loudly...Luna was moaning like a cat in heat and Ben was moaning himself...

"Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm...ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu papi...ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..AYE MIOS DIOS...OHHHHHHHHH!!"she moaned.

Another THREE HOURS slipped by and Ben watched Luna get the most peaceful, serene look on her face he ever saw...Then burst into tears....Kissing him so softly that he just came like a river.... By now the bed was squeaking and the headboard was slamming against the walls loudly...Luna was moaning like a cat in heat and he was moaning louder and louder...

"Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm...ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu papi...ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..AYE MIOS DIOS...OHHHHHHHHH!!"she moaned.

Another TWO HOURS slipped by and Ben watched her smile first as if she was going to laugh...Then burst into tears....Kissing him so softly that he just came like a river....again......and again....

 Luna smiled at Ben...He sat up, trying to catch his breath...he took a swig of cold water....She was kissing his  chest and his neck and licking his face...She clearly was not finished...She took the bottle from him and sat it down on the table..

Another THREE or so hours went by...They both were enjoying themselves immensely.

"Luna...you're driving me crazy..."Ben  moaned...

She kept smiling...

''Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm,ouuuuuuu papi..you feel sooooooooooo goooood....gracias!" she cooed..

 Again and again..Ben watched her get the most peaceful, serene look on her face he ever saw...Then burst into tears....Kissing him so softly that he just came like a river....Her body trembled....He was still cumming....

She was the best sex he had ever had... He had met her in the market six months before..He didn't know anything about her except she was from South America and trying to get her citizenship...She didn't talk about her family or her past and there were no photos or mementos of her past life at all..

He could tell that she was very educated....He gave her a job at the ACLU...She had told him she was a Para legal...but had no certificate or papers to prove that...She did seem to know her way around the office and know just a little bit more about the application of law and predicates than the average para-legal...but he didn't care...He was in love and all he knew was he wanted to be with her..
