Death In Patterson

 FRIDAY MORNING!- 10: 30 AM

Ms. Yvette sent us a text saying we could come in late today...

Ms. Virginia, using Alfreda's caterer had a catered breakfast for us in our conference room..

We were all very surprised.

"Best Law Firm Evvvvvvverrrrrrrrrr!" said Bee Bee..

"Oh wowwwwwwwww! This is sooo cool..." I said...Grateful that we got to sleep a lot later than we normally would have..

"Best Boss Lady evvvvverrrrrrrrrrr" said Sofia to Ms. Yvette..

"Yes indeed to both!" said Kahlil as we all made plates and sat down...

"This job and you all make me love America more."laughed Jade as she fixed a plate and sat down with us...

"Best staff ever...You guys have really been working hard lately...I couldn't be successful without you and I mean that... Come on over here Virginia, you're staff too!" said Ms. Yvette

Ms. Virginia joined us too!

"So how was the Skating Rink last night?" asked Ms. Virginia.

"Oh My God...It was sooooo much fun..."said Sofia..

"Great exercise.." said Kahlil...

"They had five d.J.'s there who had the place lit... until 2:00 am... We were all exhausted when we left, but it was a good kind of exhausted..

"I wonder how the others are?" I asked...

"I saw them on the train this morning...They all had on sunglasses, looked beat..."said Ms. Yvette as we all laughed loud and continued to eat our food..

"Beverly said that the next holiday weekend..she wants to organize another trip to the rink on Friday Night and then another laundry day on Saturday Morning..With more people attending..."said Bee Bee.

"Look at Beverly....How far she's come, Attorney, Founding partner with her aunt of a law firm and event planner."said Ms. Yvette..

Once again, we all laughed...

"Not to put a damper on things guys but Monday is our preliminary hearing...Get some rest this weekend, don't party too hardy." said Ms. Yvette.

''We aren't partying tonight Ms. Yvette.. All of us, Kayla, Ray, Jazzy, Dabnis, Jessie and Chip

said that they're staying in tonight, like you and Gary did last night...We are ordering take out and chilling..."said Kahlil..

''Yeah , I know me and Keith are...Sofia and Kahlil too..No drinking or dancing tonight....and Beverly and Nelson, Josie and Paris and Bresha and Tony said the same thing...

They're staying in too and ordering take out."said Bee Bee.

"You know, somebody rang my doorbell last night...laid on it for a half hour...They apparently didn't get the message that either no one was home or no one was about to answer."said Ms. Yvette.

"I'll give you two guesses as to who that was..He stopped by our house,looking for you when you and Gary were in Patterson..right during dinner hour."said Sofia.

"He's on C&D...Next time he bangs on anyone of our doors..Call the Sherriff... That's what Olivia and Beverly had to do to stop him from coming by their house.  I think he got locked up two times..maybe three." I said.

"He doesn't know where we work, so I guess he has to stop by our homes."said Kahlil.

"No he doesn't.... What he does borders on Harrassment... Call Jetty...He'll take care of it..Him, I mean."said Virginia..

Yvette, Jade and Bee Bee all looked at Virginia and smiled..

''What? What?  Awwww now see, yall gone stop teasing me about that man.."said Virginia ,laughing..

A Bouquet of Red Roses had arrived this morning...

Jetty had spent the night with Ms. Virginia...

He came to Josie's and picked Virginia up last night....

He had stopped by after she came home from Josie's

"GOD BLESS AMERICA!" he had said when helping her out of her slacks and slipping her panties down.

Crime Scene Investigators were on the scene, snapping photos and collecting shells....The body of a young black male, pudgy, five foot ,nine inches, a bit pudgy lie face up in a pool of blood..

"This was a mess....He was hit seven times....in the side, in the chest and in the back...apparently, he was ambushed..." said one CSI guy...

"He had this gun on him...It looks like he was trying to pull it out... but he didn't get a shot off..." said the other C.S.I. guy...

A Homicide Detective on the scene apparently knew the victim...

"This guy just has the worst luck....This is Karim Slaughter...he just got out of jail, two days ago... Narcos picked him up for possession with intent to distrbute....Wife left him, took his daughter with her to Philly...and now this....Geeez!" he said.  "Take this gun, run it through VICAP and decks...see if it's a match for any other crimes." said the Detective who looked at the body and shook his head...

"Get him outta here..." he said.

The body was put in a white body bag and placed on a gurney and wheeled to a waiting M.E.'s office van...

AND IN PHILADELPHIA-

Yvette and our client, Kim Slaughter sat in her office.

"How did you get involved with Karim in the first place Kimmy?" asked Ms. Yvette,

"We met in High School, 10th Grade,,,He had a car when no one else did , always wore nice clothes...Hardly ever came to school...I kind of knew what he did...and who he was...but I went with him anyways....I stayed on him about school and he did graduate....

I went to college, Stockton University and we continued to go together... He went to one year of Community College and dropped out....He was slinging drugs for his cousin, Cheese... Cheese owned a Barber Shop and a small bottling business..but everybody on the streets knew he was a big time drug dealer... He sold his package to all of the drug dealers in the area.. Karim went from having a corner and a crew who sold for him, to working distinctly for his cousin...Making payments, collecting and driving his cousin and his associates around.." said Kim.

"So by the time you graduated from college, you pretty much knew what Karim did and who he was huh?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"Yeah...I kind of always knew... He had a car and a nice apartment and nice clothes in the 10th and 11th grade... No kid has that and doesn't appear to be working unless he's "in the life" so to speak."said Kim.

"You were attracted to the flash huh?" asked Ms. Yvette.

"Yeah... He has a few arrests, but no convictions...No Prison time..We got married and I got pregnant...I was working at a firm in Jersey City at the time.Right around that time, I got a job offer in Philly...I talked to him about us getting out of Patterson, away from the street life... I told him...."Karim, you're smart, you have a head for business..You could go to school, you could be something else, something better...For our daughter..Come on, please...Come with me...I'll pay for you to go to school...I begged him, but he didn't want to go... We had been married for 7 years and our daughter was 2.  I was tired and one day, I up and left...I moved to Philly, I got a new job and I was reffered to you and I sued him for divorce...  I met David...I told him I was married and going through a divorce...he didn't mind...We moved in together.. For awhile..We were happy...Then Karim found out where I was living and started harrassing me and David and threatening us on Social Media, through texts and emails...the works.."said Kim..

"You were smart to save all of that...We can use it in your custody argument...  We used it in your divorce argument.."said Ms. Yvette.

Ms. Jade walked into Ms. Yvette's office..

"Her custody argument just got easier.. Her Ex-Husband, Karim Slaughter was shot to death early this morning by persons unknown in Patterson, New Jersey..." said Jade.

"WHAT???" said Ms. Yvette, incredulous..

"It's true...It was on the news just now..."said Bee Bee.

"It says he was ambushed in an early morning gun battle.."said Sofia.

"You won't have a custody battle now Kim." I said.

"All we gotta do is get these murder charges dropped and as lame as this case is... that should be easy."said Kahlil..

Kim had a look of pure dread on her face...

FRIDAY AFTERNOON-

 

Nightfall...It had been a very interesting couple of days. 

The Preliminary hearing was Monday .We all hoped to settle this matter without going to trial.

We were all at home tonight.

Bee Bee was wearing a sheer see through Baby doll.....She had just taken a hot shower and walked into our bedroom..

My eyes popped out of my head..

April Taylor, Lt. Tragg's girl had been embarrassed immensely by that lecherous Judge Cowley and had taken a leave of absence and had gone to San-Francisco.  She left no forwarding address..

"I bet you Lt. Tragg will keep his hands to himself with her.. She'll knock him into the next courtroom if he sticks his hands up under her skirt.."said Bee Bee.

Kim snickered... "I can't believe him..." she said.

"Believe it... We had a client...a Judge, who stuck his hands up under Bee Bee and my dress, We both had to slap him." said Sofia..

"Uh Uh..For real?" said Kim...

"You'd be surprised." said Kahlil..

"Yeah you would." I said.

Lt. Tragg behaved himself.. He sat next to ADA Edwards..His hands were neatly folded and in his lap...

He had no intention whatsoever of sticking his hands under her skirt.

ADA Edwards began the improbable argument that Kimberly Slaughter shot and killed her lover, David Peterson...She gave no motive ,

Which Ms. Yvette argued effectively......

With help from Ms. Jade... I showed a timeline of the murder and I showed , using Credit Card and Debit Card slips where Kimberly was up until the murder, which had her 6-8 blocks away at the Bakery.and before that, renting a car, that was rented for her by David Peterson..

Kahlil brought impeachable witnesses who testify the whereabouts of Kim Slaughter at this time..

Bee Bee showed that witnesses all said the killer was dressed in all black and was 5'9 and pudgy....

She pointed out that Kim Slaughter is petite and about 5'2..

ADA Edwards glared angrilly at Lt. Tragg...She hadn't even got to call any of the witnesses yet and already they were bring shot down..

Yvette and Sofia showed screenshots of Kim's then estranged husband, Karim Slaughter's emails, texts, Facebook posts, Twitter Posts and Instagram posts threatening the life of both Kim and her lover, David Peterson...

''Seems to us that Mr. Slaughter should have been more the suspect than our client" they said.. "He's 5'9 and pudgy..." they said.

She glared angrilly at Lt. Tragg..

"IMAGINE THAT!" she glowered.. This was the first day...The first day of the Preliminary Hearing and already, her entire argument had been destroyed..

Finally she tossed her hands up...

"Your honor can we approach the bench." she said.

"Approach!" said Judge Wong..

Ms. Yvette smiled.. She saw the total frustration in ADA Edwards face..She smiled at all of us as they approached the bench.

"Your Honor...In the interest of Justice, the people wish to drop all charges against Kimberly Slaughter...There clearly is no evidence that she is guilty of these charges ....In fact ,more evidence points to her late ex-husband as being the killer." she said.

"From what I have heard ,I am inclined to agree...ALL CHARGES AGAINST MRS. SLAUGHTER ARE HEARBY DISMISSED!!!" said Judge Wong!

"OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU GUYS SOOOO MUCH!" said Kim Slaughter..

"This was easier than I thought it was going to be." said Bee Bee.

"I know...I expected at least a two day argument.." I said.

"I'm not surprised...They had the weakest argument I've seen yet as am attorney." said Sofia.

''Wow...This is incredible."said Kahlil.

"Yes it was." said Jade.

"I told you to trust me...This was a battle I KNEW we were going to win...I knew it would never make it to trial either... Now in two days we are going to go and get your baby.!" said Ms. Yvette.

Kim hugged Yvette for a long time...

"Thank You...Thank You so much!" she said...

Lt. Tragg was as usual livid!

"You dropped the charges?? You dropped the damn charges?? I don't believe it !" he bellowed.

"You should have never made the charges... I knew this case was weak, the minute I saw it... I kept asking, why wasn't the husband a suspect?  You know Artie...You used to be a half way decent detective..What happened to you?  Has being on Television deadened your skills...??? Oh My god, you are terrible!" She said as she walked away from him...

with her legal roller.

Lt. Tragg looked around...We were already gone....He shook his head....

WEDNESDAY MORNING- 10:00 AM, Courtroom C

Again, we were in front of Judge Amy Courtland...

''Well, you have been cleared of Murder charges... and all of these people here on your behalf is certainly proof that you should have your baby....She'll be brought to you in 30 minutes...Good Luck to you and be well my dear." she said.

Kim was in tears...

"OHHHHHHHHHH THANK YOUUUU, THANK YOU ALL!" she said, crying profusely...She hugged

Ms. Yvette, Bee Bee, Sofia and Ms. Jade.

''It's all over ...It's all over baby girl..You were cleared of murder charges and you have total custody of your baby." said Yvette.

''We told you to trust us...Your long nightmare is over ." said Bee Bee.

"Now you have a chance to rebuild your life." said Sofia.

''Good Luck to you.." said Jade.

She hugged me and Kahlil..

"THANK YOU GUYS TOO! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!" she said.

"You're welcome.." I said..

"You're welcome." said Kahlil..

We vanished into the safety of our new building and our new modern cafeteria..

Lt. Tragg, furious at losing yet another case, at arresting yet another wrong suspect stood outside of April Taylor's empty condo.

He didn't know when she was coming back from San-Francisco......or if she was coming back!

EPILOUGE-

The Gun taken off of Karim Slaughter was run through VICAP and Decks and it wound up being a match for the gun used in the Philadelphia murder of David Peterson, making the dead, Karim Slaughter, the most likely suspect in his murder.

The murder of Karim Slaughter remains open and unsolved.

We sat in Food Court..

''Wow, what a few weeks this has been huh?" said Bee Bee.

"I knowwwwww right?" said Sofia.

"I'm glad it's all over..I could use a few days rest..." I said.

"I know..doing nothing but sleeping." said Kahlil.

"In the coziness and warmth of our homes."said Sofia.

''Yessssssss"said Bee Bee.

As four hot chocolates were served...

''Heyyyyyyyyyyy here come our drinks."said Kahlil.

"Mmmmmmmm they smell good." I said.

And we all drank warm hot chocolates on a cold mid winter's night.. A nice ending to a wild bunch of weeks.
