The Gambler

 We were ready for trial, which was in a few days...

Our client was quite pleased with the job we had been doing... He had dropped by and asked for the "Grand Tour" of our building.

Beverly and Olivia took him upstairs to their domiciles

Both Olivia and Beverly groaned... They had heard that phrase one too many times...

Downstairs, they showed him the adjacent part of the building...Their massive law library..

"This is our law library... Josie here helped design it.."said Olivia proudly...

Josie smiled.

''I suppose all of your friends moved in this neighborhood eventually huh?  With all these new houses that went up." he said.

''Yes, starting with my cousin Kayla and her husband, Ray, both attorneys... Then my bestie and room mate from law school,

Yvette Jones-Lockwood and her husband, Gary...

Innocence Project Attorneys Jessica and Chip Sanchez-Burrows..

Jasmine Coley, who was in law school with my niece and my cousin and later worked as a Public Defender with us and Nelson  and went on to be an Assistant District Attorney before going into private practice moved around here next..Her husband worked a couple of cases with us before and then helped Josie study for the bar.." said Olivia.

"WOWWWW!  " exclaimed David.

"And within the next two years..

Ms. Yvette's entire staff moved across the street...and our two associate attorneys, Bresha and Josie got married and they moved into the neighborhood too!"explained Beverly.

''We are all one big happy family...and check this out.. Through co-incidence...They all work in the same building down near Penns Landing

Except for Yvette, Josie and Jade's husbands.." said Beverly..

"Myyyy goodness...Such togetherness... I love it.."laughed David as he took a seat at the conference table.

This morning, our Eight  take out orders from Sam Mother's arrived.

Eggs, Hash browns, Sausages, Orange Juice, Hot Coffee and Toast with Jam.. and we enjoyed a nice breakfast... It was going to be an easy day...We were ready for trial in two days.

After breakfast ,I plunked a dossier down in front of David.

''What's this?" he asked.

''For you that's bed time reading..but you can read it now." I said.

Josie , Beverly and Bresha smiled...

''That's a dossier on the man who is going to be trying to put you in federal prison for 40 years..We thought you should know about him." said Olivia.

"You guys look into everything."laughed David.

"That's why we win cases.." said Nelson.

Alfreda smiled as she collected the styrofoam boxes ,cups, knives, forks and spoons and deposited them in a trash bag..

Just then the doorbell rang.

"I got it." said Alfreda.

It was Lawrence Stephenson...an old friend of ours..He was both a Forensic Accountant and an Attorney who had worked with us for years.

"Olivia....how are you doing? Donnie Ray? Beverly?? ,Nelson, Josie and Bresha right?" he said.

"Right? " said Bresha , happy to be acknowledged as part of our team..

"Hello Lawrence, Long time no see? "said a smiling Olivia.

"Were you just in the neighborhood?" I asked.

"No...I'm afraid I'm in need of a favor." he asked.

"As much help as you've given us over the years...You know all you have to do is ask....Oh excuse my manners...This is our client, David Ides Jr. We go to trial in two days."said Olivia.  

"Pleased to meet you in person...I believe you did some audits for my father a few years ago."said David.

"Mr. Stephenson is a Forensic Accountant and an Attorney as well."said Beverly.

"Nelson and I worked a court case with him once."said Josie.

"You did?" asked Bresha.

"Yes...we did!" said Nelson.

"Yes, Liv loaned them to me...One of the many favors we've done for each other over the years...Donnie Ray saved my life once...In London...That's a long story I'll tell you some other time...I remember your father...Sorry about what happened to him...."said Lawrence..

''So this favor Lawrence?" asked Olivia.

"I need Donnie Ray to find someone for me....My nephew.....He's what you call and "Opportunity Investor." He was trying to get me to invest in some property out near Atlantic City in the neighboring county...He said it was going to be a gold mine...Stores, Banks, A Movie Theatre...Hotels...I wasn't interested, but I think he and his partner got somebody to invest... He was over my house for dinner the other night and he stole a very expensive Rolex watch from me. He has never stolen before.. I don't care about the watch...but I think he's in some trouble...Serious trouble.." said Lawrence.. "If you could find him for me...I'd be very welcome."said Lawrence...

"I'll do what I can Lawrence." I said.

Lawrence pulled out a checkbook...

"Put that away...your money is no good here."said Olivia, smiling.

I was surprised at how fast Beverly and I were able to track down the Pawn shop where Lawrence Stephenson's nephew pawned his Rolex

This watch retailed at $17,000.00..His nephew got $6000.00 for it..

which Brendan paid for it, to have it back..

Finding the motel he was holed up at..took a few hours more..but we found it.

Beverly knocked softly on the door..

''And I'm a Private Investigator, Donnie Ray Alexander." I said.

''At least you aint cops...whew."said Luke.

"How much are you in for?" asked Lawrence..

"85 Large....The only way I can possibly get it  is to win big at the Blackjack table...and I aint that good." he said.

''You'll wind up deeper in debt...Don't you see? Playing these type of games will never get you out of debt..you'll just fall deeper."said Beverly, who was the exact same age as Luke.

''Who are you into? He a major player?" I asked.

"Kinda...He's a Philly guy.... Nicky Rubin." he said.

"Nicky Rubin...That name sound familliar to you Bev?" I asked.

"That's the guy the FBI picked up...The witness in our case." she said.

''Wait! YOU KNOW THIS GUY?" asked Luke Barbor.

''I know of him....Where does he play?"I asked.

"He plays at Eddie Lee's joint in Chinatown most nights...Why?"" asked Luke.

"I know a pretty good card player and I think she can take him....Best card player I ever saw, next to you Shortcake." I said.

"Curley's drinks are more reasonable." said Josie.

"I hope Liv doesn't lose up there."said Tony...

"Trust me Tony...My Auntay doesn't play much, but when she does..She's Killer."said Beverly.

Everybody knew that Eddie Lee, the proprietor  of this establishment ran a very very popular restaurant and a few floors up an open air casino..

Eddie Lee passed him a fresh deck...

"Just to make sure everything is on the up and up." he said.

Eddie Lee stood, laughing in the background..
