The Day Before The Ethics Hearing

It was our last meeting...Ms.Yvette held court...She passed files around the table to each of us..

Myself...Keith Jones

Bee Bee

Kahlil

Sofia

and Mike Pratt...

We had gone over our defense and every aspect of the case against Mike...

Jade walked in and passed Yvette a file...Yvette read it carefully.....

"Our firms by laws states that a Partner can bring another Partner up on ethics charges if he has sufficient evidence of wrong doing and if found guilty...that partner can be removed from partnership, terminated and possibly censured...The attorney Connor has hired..Wallace Payton

is a heavy hitter....He has done this before at other law firms....He has a nearly perfect record having only lost two cases and guess who beat him? Guess who tied his tail both times?" asked Yvette...."Our good friends, Olivia Bennett-Alexander and Beverly West."

she said..

"Boooo Yaaaaaa!"laughed Bee Bee...

"You're their biggest fan" I laughed...

Bee Bee whispered in my ear...

"Here are the other players...According to our by laws...Independent Arbitrators have to be brought in...This woman, Attorney Patricia Reynolds...a former Judge herself and the WIFE of Judge Percy Reynolds of Philadelphia..will be the chief arbitrator...Olivia and I clerked for her when we first got out of law school and passed the bar..She's no nonsense.."said Yvette

who showed us a glossy of her...She was a very attractive woman...

''No Nonsense??  She was caught in bed with former Assistant State's Attorney Eric Becker and then Olivia and Beverly  defended her husband for nearly killing another man who he caught kissing her in a Soul food Restaurant by the airport...Seems to me like she's about a lot of nonsense.."said Kahlil..

Mike Pratt busted out laughing and high fived Kahlil...

''Seems Like it.." he laughed...

Yvette laughed too...she had read the newspapers and seen the stories  on the news....She looked at Sofia...

"I do the best I can Ms. Yvette, he is just incorrigable.." she said as we all laughed..

Yvette pulled out another glossey...

"This is the other arbitrator...

Attorney Randy Bates...Former Assistant District Attorney, here in Philadelphia, former Judge..Former Assistant States Attorney, now in Private Practice...He's definitely a straight shooter and no nonsense..."said Yvette...

While we were talking...At this very minute in a seedy ,unassuming hotel downtown...

SIX OR SEVEN HOURS LATER!

Patty sat on the floor as Randy dressed...

"Girllll does Percy know how hot you are?  LAWWWWD!" he moaned...

''Let's not talk about my husband okay???...We've got that jive ethics hearing at McCluskey , Cozen, Connor and Pratt tomorrow.."said Patricia...

"Yeah, white folks is something...One of the partners is takin the other partner to task..Probably for something they both did.."he laughed...

We looked over one last person....

''This is the last person...Attorney Archie Peterson...

One time law professor at Penn and presently in private practice..."said Yvette..

"We know him don't we Bee?" said Sofia, smiling..

"He taught a Legal ethics course when we were at Penn.." said Bee Bee...

"I was in his class...Good guy..."said Kahlil...

"I didn't have him...but after I graduated and passed the bar..He put out some feelers for me...I told him I was looking for a job..He's at a small firm , they didn't have room for me..A real straight shooter."I said.

"I know him too...He gave me your name...Yours too Bee Bee....That's how I found you....I found Sofia and Kahlil through another service when I was looking for candidates..If anyone is above the nonsense, he is...

AND YET THREE YEARS AGO-

"Counselor...You know we shouldn't be meeting like this...I am prosecuting a case against you...."said Patricia Reynolds..

"You mean a case I just lost to you!...My client is facing life in prison on second degree murder charges...Come on...We can work something out better than that can't we?"said Archie Peterson...

"You want me to go easy at sentencing huh?" she said and smiled...

He smiled..

"I'm trying to do the best I can for my client....Can't we uh work something out?" he whispered...

"Hmmmmm, perhaps we can uh work something out..." whispered Patricia...Who had been watching him the entire trial...She thought he was cute.

Within an hour they were in a hotel, making sweet love..

  FOUR TO FIVE HOURS PASSED BY and they didn't sound as if they were even close to stopping.

Finally he began to come and come hard...

Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu,wouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu, ohhhhhhhhhhhh lawdddddddddddddddddddd!" he yelled...

"Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu ARCHIEEEEEEEE OUUUUU!!" she moaned as she came herself..

The next day, she changed his clients conviction from 2nd degree Murder to Manslaughter and sentenced him to 3-10 years... His client is being released this week!


So much for being above the non-sense..





IV-

So Here we were inside the big boardroom

at McCluskey/Cozen /Connor and Pratt

Partner, Mike Pratt walked in ,flanked by Yvette, Myself,Sofia, Kahlil and Bee Bee..

All attorneys employed by this firm...

The first Arbitrator there was Archie Peterson, who recognized all of us...

"Oh My God...Bee Bee Evans, Keith Jones, Sofia Garcia and Kahlil Ahmed...My former students...You all work here now? Wowwww!" he said..

"Yes and we are representing Mr. Pratt.." I said..

"Nice to see you Mr. Peterson.."said Bee Bee...

"Nice to see you too Bee Bee and Sofia...Look at you..." he said ,smiling.. and checking them both out....

He had secretly wanted to sleep with both Sofia and Bee Bee the entire time they were in law school, but had never made an overt move....

"Hello, It's good to see you Mr. Peterson.."  said Sofia..

"And Kahlil...Heyyyyyyyy" he said...

"Heyy Mr. Peterson."said Kahlil..

 Mr. McClusky looked at his partner Sam Cozen and said-

"Things area already bad for Connor..One of the Arbirators is a former teacher of four of the defense attorneys.." he said dryly..

"I told him this vendetta he has against Pratt is fruitless.."said Sam Cozen....

 Patricia Reynolds , Chief Arbitrator came in next....Her first shock was seeing Yvette Jones ,who once clerked for her..being here as chief defense attorney..

''Vettie...Is that you? You look fantastic girlfriend" said Patricia..

"Ms. Patty, it is indeed me...I'll be representing Mr. Pratt."said Yvette..

''Good for you...Good for you...You've done well for yourself.." she said.

.Her next shock was seeing Archie Peterson

who she had slept with three years ago and fixed a verdict for him also here and on the panel....

He certainly was pleased with what he saw...He couldn't take his eyes of of Patricia Reynolds..

I wish he'd take that silly grin off of his face...she mused.

Bad enough....Randy Bates was also on the panel...She had slept with him every afternoon for the past two weeks and just this morning...The man was getting to be a problem...He never got enough and had been calling her and texting a little too much lately...

She had only meant to sleep with him once...Not have an affair..It had now become an everyday thing...
He was staring at her like a hungry wolf....

Jade whispered to Ms. Yvette..

"Is it me or does everybody look uncomfortable in here?"

''No...I'm getting the same vibe...Something is off kilter.."said Yvette..

Bob Connor, Wallace Payton and  Bert Vandenbergall walked in and sat down

 "Well let's get these precedings started.. According to our bylaws...I am bringing ethics charges against our Jr. Partner... Micheal John Pratt.." he stated..

 Wallace Payton, his attorney sat stoned faced...He glared at Yvette with an icy coldness that would have intimidated others...but did nothing to her..or her four young attorneys..

He laid out the case...

"Our Fair Haired boy was sent to London because he was inappropriate with a female Attorney here at our main office and she threatened to sue the firm.." he said..

In London ,it doesn't seem as if he stopped..He is principally responsible for the marital discord of said female attorney...Here is the DNA reports....It is inconclusive if it's his baby or the husbands...They were running another check and it's due at anytime now, The baby and the results of the DNA test!....The mother was said to be the same female Attorney ...She is the niece of Mr. Connor...One of our partners..
He apparently could not leave her alone." he stated.

Mya refused to testify or have any part in the hearing...She couldn't be forced to.

Bert Vandenburg sat stoically....

Ms. Yvette spoke next..

"My client was not innapropriate at any time with the other attorney..We have no rules stating that fellow attorneys here can not date...Mr. Pratt and Mrs. Connor-Pruitt worked together on several cases...They were a very successful team...In that time, a relationship developed...An extra-marital relationship..while I admit that such a relationship was wrong...It was carried on outside of the office and not on work time."said Yvette.

 Bert Vandenberg passed Wallace Payton a paper..

"Apparently not Ms. Jones...This is a sworn affadavit from an employee who says he saw them kissing in his office and he heard moaning and cooing..."said Wallace Payton..

"Here say....Office Gossip...Is there anyone else who can verify that?" asked Bee Bee..

"They were seen at lunch and at an early morning breakfast...but never in any sexual embrace by the twenty or so people we interviewed..."said Sofia..

Wallace Payton looked at both Sofia and Bee Bee with an icy cold hatred..

"These were two consenting adults..There was no inappropriate behavior...but..I can see the girl's uncle and a friend of her husband not liking the entire situation ."I said , (As our twenty or so witnesses testified to suspecting the two were involved but never seeing anything in the office.)

knowing that I had killed any chance I had to ever make partner here by the way Connor looked at me..

"There was a confrontation and The Husband and wife were transferred to London.."said Kahlil.

"Yes and shortly thereafter...Pratt got himself sent to London, where the two continued to carry on and  the young woman wound up pregnant!  Her husband was so distraught , he committed suicide.."said Wallace Payton.

"He didn't get himself sent to London...He was transferred there a month after Mr. and Mrs Pruitt had already left."said Bee Bee..

''Here is the Transfer order...It's signed by you Mr. Connor."said Sofia..

Robert Connor looked like he had swallowed a canary....This was the information he had been looking for the day he went into Yvette's office...Anything that could hurt him...There it was...

 Yvette smiled..Bee Bee and Sofia were too young, too new, too green to understand that by going against a partner they were killing any chance they had of being a partner in this firm....She knew better, She hoped for bigger and better things for them anyway one day,maybe somewhere else...

She went on to say-

"Mya Pruitt was pregnant...but not by my client...Here are the DNA reports from the paternity test....The baby was her husband's Mr. Pruitt..He was so distraught...He committed suicide in London before he saw the results..and unfortunately Mrs. Pruitt miscarried shortly there after.."said Yvette...

 "I don't care who signed any order to send him where..None of this would have transpired if he would have left Mrs. Pruitt alone.." he said..

Wallace Payton gave a brilliant , but long and dull closing statement about morality and the lack of it in today's work place and called on the Arbitrators to rule in Mr. Connors favor and  find Mr. Pratt in violation.
a finding that would certainly lead to his termination and possible censure by the Bar association.

Randy Bates was hardly listening, his hands were up Patricia's skirt..rubbing her legs and gently pulling at the waistband of her panties..

"Damn woman...I know it was just this morning..but I need some more...lawd!  You're as hot as a crock pot!" he whispered and giggled.

She discreetly removed his hands.....but smiled at the compliment...

''Would you knock it off please?" she whispered...still smiling...

Archie Peterson whispered in her ear..

''It's been a long time Patty..I'd love to make magic with you again after this hearing is over.." and the next thing you know, his hands were up her skirt, rubbing her legs..and trying nimbly to run his fingers up her panties..

"Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuu!" she moaned and jumped..and moved his hand....''Excuse me" she said and smiled sheepishly.

 I smiled sheepishly..I had seen the entire thing...Wallace Payton's sumnation was long and boring..I felt like I was in a school lecture.

 So did Kahlil...He saw it too! He almost laughed out loud..

 "Somebody's got a problem with their hands." whispered Sofia to Bee Bee..Who had seen both men running their hands up her skirt..

 "Yeah,how about that? "said Bee Bee..

 Jade giggled...

But Yvette was concerned...She went into her closing argument..

"They were wrong...She was married..He was a partner...She should have known better...HE should have known better! but they were consenting adults who entered into this thing willingly..Who here hasn't been in love?  "I've been in love before and love makes no sense and sometimes it's messy..and if it's worth anything it's worth fighting for..worth taking a risk for!!It's never or rarely neat and simple."she said...

It was short and sweet...She hoped it would be enough...

The Arbitrators went into a separate office.

It took thirty minutes...

''We have come to a consensus..."said Patricia Reynolds....

"There was no wrong doing here...Not of the "Me Too" type anyway...We read your bylaws...These were two consenting adults..It was indeed messy and wrong...but Mr. Pratt did nothing unethical according to your firms bylaws...This was all off site.."said Archie Peterson.

"I uh concur...We rule in favor of Mr. Pratt!"said Randy Bates..

"The matter is closed."said Patricia Reynolds , who got up, grabbed her briefcase and quickly walked out...

Wallace Payton was furious...He had now lost a third case and this time to Ms. Yvette and us...He slammed his hand loudly on the table and kicked over a small trash can...He stared at us one last time...

"Let's Get the Hell Out of Here...I need a drink!" said Wallace Payton.

 ''Ditto."said Bert.

He and Bert Vandenberg got up and quickly exited...

 Randy Bates was looking for Patricia Reynolds , but there was no sign of her..He dialed her number..but it went to voicemail..He rushed to the elevator...

Archie Peterson looked around for Patricia Reynolds also, but she was nowhere to be found..He quickly exited also...

 Mr. McClusky and Mr. Cozen looked at a distraught Robert Connor..

 He had lost, bested by attorneys from his own firm....He wouldn't forget this....He was shaking, nearly in tears....

 "It's over...and Bob, I mean it...Pratt is here to stay and you'll just have to deal with it...No more...This vendetta you have is officially done with..You hear me?And don't even think about any reprisals against Yvette Jones or her team. Do I make myself clear?"said Mr. McCluskey..

"I-I-I wouldn't dream of any reprisals against Ms. Jones or her team....She's proven to be a very capable attorney..So have they.." he said...Still shaking with a white hot rage...

''Bob!Take some time off...You've got it coming...In fact..TAKE ALL THE TIME YOU NEED!"said Sam Cozen...

 "Yes sir." he said..and slowly got up....

Robert Connor was distraught....He said nothing...He got up and stormed out....Nearly in tears!

''Well ,I just destroyed any chance I had of ever being partner at this firm.."sighed Ms. Yvette.."I may have deep sixed my babies too." she said..

''Don't be so sure of that!..I'm here now...and you've got McClusky in your pocketbook and Sam Rosen will go along with whatever he says...Whether you make partner or not..You'll always be taken care of Yvette..You have my word on that...You and your five associates..You want it..I'll see to it that you and your guys get it!"said Mike Pratt, who hugged Yvette..
"Thanks babe.." he said and kissed her on the cheek...

''Ms. Yvette..We are going out to dinner...You're invited and your meal is on all of us."said Bee Bee.

''Awww you don't have to do that guys.." she said.

I put my arm around her...

"We insist...after the week we've all had.." I said..

"Yeah Ms. Yvette..Call Gary, tell him to meet us at Red Bar..."said Kahlil..

''Red Bar? Ouuuuuuuuu."said Ms. Yvette.

"Only the best for our Boss Lady..." said Sofia..

 ''Stoppp you're gonna make me cry."said Ms. Yvette, who had been getting emotional a lot lately.

Patricia Reynolds walked out of Yvette's office...

''Vettie girl, it was so nice seeing you again...You've done well for yourself..And that skirt is popping girl..We've got to get together and go shopping one Saturday...I-I just hid out in your office...Those two guys, oh my god...They were a pain in the you know what...They both want to sleep with me...I've told them I'm a happily married woman..Is there a side way out of here?" she asked..

"Yeah those back stairs.....but that's a long way down...Just take the elevator.."said Yvette.

"That's okay...I need the exercise..."said Patricia Reynolds as she exited down the back stairs..

On the next flight...Mike Pratt and Mya Connors-Pruitt were kissing passionately...

 ''Ohhhh Myaaa.." he moaned..

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Michaelllll.." she cooed..

Patricia Reynolds ran pass them..

"You know, You two really need to get a room!" she said.

EPILOUGE-

We all met at Red Booth a little later and enjoyed a delicious meal..

It was nice that we were splitting the cost five ways...This place was not cheap...

''Ahhhh I could get used to this..." I joked after finishing my meal..

''Me too!I want you to bring me here for my birthday.."said Bee Bee..who hugged me and snuggled into my chest...

Gary busted out laughing...

"Never say anything like that youngin..."he said to me..

Ms.Yvette laughed...

"Thank you guys...I'm so proud of you..." she said.

''Things should calm down now, you think Ms. Yvette?" asked Sofia.

''For awhile..I heard McClusky tell Connor to take all of the time off he needed...He'll be out of our hair for awhile.."said Kahlil..

"He's a petty man...He won't forget...Just watch your backs when he's around..I already figure, in addition to Mike Pratt, I'm in his cross hairs too."said Yvette.

''Like you said, we'll watch each other's backs....."said Ms. Jade , who was there with her friend, Lt. Danny Ho..

"Office intriuge and infighting is the worst.."said Danny Ho...

"Well tonight...there is no infighting...Just celebrating..." she said.

We all raised our glasses...

"To Love" she said..

"TO LOVE !" we repeated in unison.
