Rainbows and Alibis

 MORNING!

Regina was dreaming...

She was diving into the cold , Deep Blue Sea...

Swimming for hours....

That Yacht turning in the opposite direction...

with just Mr. Rathbone and Victoria on it...

finally alone and screwing each other silly on the boat.....

And Captain Jack Sparks on his boat..

administering her the spiked broth..

He had to know it was spiked.. Was he in on the plot for her to drown too???

She walked over to her window and looked out at the sky...

Halfway across the city...

"Well as I told Lt. Tragg...I smelled a scam from the beginning...and I told Regina that...but one million dollars for just one dive is hard to turn away from...They didn't want me around...They paid me twice my commission...and told me to take a powder...Who does that? " said Pete.

and Shrimp and Grits arrived.

"Nobody does that...If anything they pay you after the job is done." said Beverly...

"And they paid you twice as much, hoping you'd be happy and keep quiet." said Nelson..

Beverly and Nelson listened attentively as their order of

 Shrimp and Grits also arrived..

"So at this point you ran your theory to a lawyer?" said Olivia.

"Yes , I spoke to Dabnis Coley..

I believe you know him...and he told me that they were acing me out of the deal effectively and that even though this publicity stunt looked somewhat suspect...It wasn't exactly illegal.." he said.

"At least not until a boat exploded and another thermos of broth was found laced with barbituates." said Josie, who was enjoying an omelette..

and some hot coffee..

that was steaming hot!!!

"Did you share this with Regina?" asked Olivia.

Bresha sat by Olivia and listened attentively to the questions....She was like a sponge absorbing everything..

"I did, but all she could see was dollar signs...she kept saying..."You got paid..and now I'm going to get paid...don't ruin this for me..So I didn't, but I hung around...I wore a disguise...I hung around and listened.." said Pete.

"You didn't hear anything about a murder plot?" I asked..

"No...if I had gotten wind of that..I would have put a stop to the whole thing immediately...I rented a boat and followed Regina to make sure she was alright while she was swimming...When that boat exploded , I was as surprised as the next guy.." said Pete.

"You love her don't you?" asked Beverly....

He hesitated for a minute, then he smiled.  "Yes, very much....She doesn't know." he said.

"You guys drove back to Philly after the explosion....What happened next?" asked Nelson..

"Regina said we had to get Captain Jack to the hospital...He was conscious...but he had a gaping head wound..We had wrapped his head with towels... The man was conscious..but he needed Medical Attention, so we dropped him off at the hospital.

We didn't go in...

He insisted on going in himself..

I drove Regina home...She said she wanted to shower and that she was tired..So I didn't go up...I drove off....This was about 10:30 pm, quarter to 11:00

I went to the Mermaid club...I had drinks with the Attorney, Dabnis Coley and his lovely wife, Jasmine..

They were there with another couple, 

They were attorneys too, A  Ray and Kayla St. Jacques... We all had a great time..Anytime is a great time after the day I'd had.. We left at closing..around 2:00 am." he said.

"Kayla is our cousin." said Beverly...

"And as we told you..Dabnis and Jasmine Coley live across the street from us...We've worked with them both for many years now." said Olivia.

''Well..We can cross him off..He's not our killer." I whispered to Bree.

She shook her head in agreement!

He loved Regina...He was just looking out for her...

In the Office of Dr. Timothy Brady...

"Okay Jack..we are moving the last bandage...Fortunately there is no permanent scarring." said Dr. Brady..

"Thanks Doc!" said Jack Sparks..

"Dr. Brady, Mr. Sparks...I'm glad you are both here..I'm Donnie Ray Alexander...I'm an investigator

and these are the attorneys I work for, Olivia Bennett-Alexander, my wife...Her niece, Beverly West-East and her husband, Nelson East...We are representing  Regina Jordan, the young lady accused of murdering Velma Davis -Rathbone and we have a couple of questions for you." I said.

Olivia ,Beverly and Nelson smiled..

"I know who you are? Who in Philadelphia doesn't??? I'm not answering any of your questions...If you need to know anything, here is the address of my attorney... I told the same thing to that Lt. Tragg when he came by here.." he said..

"Yes you did Doc...So I'm back with a subpeona..  The District Attorney doesn't like people like you with attitudes...So you and your lawyer will appear in court and you'll answer HIS questions there." said Lt. Tragg handing him a subpeona..

Lt. Tragg looked at us and smiled..

"Donnie Ray, Liv, Bev, Nelson...See you all in court...You all have a fine day..." he said, laughing snarkily and left....

"If you don't mind...I'd like you all to leave." said Dr. Brady, obviously furious.....

"What an asshole! And I'm not talking about Lt. Tragg this time!" said Beverly...

''Leaves us at a disadvantage.. or rather him... He doesn't have an alibi..that we know of"I said.

"Well Captain Sparks was in the hospital...It couldn't have been him." said Nelson.

"Yeah , he says he was.... Pete Marino dropped him off..but neither he nor Regina went in with him...Nelson check to see what time he checked in..and what time he checked out." I said.

"You don't trust anybody do you?" asked Olivia, smiling..

I put my arms around both Olivia and Beverly and squeezed them tight, kissing them both on the cheek.

"I trust you two 100 percent." I said. These two were the only family I had had when I first came to Philly to live.

"AWWWWWWWWWWW!" said Olivia...

"AWWWWWWWWWWWW" said Beverly....

They both giggled and laughed as I continued to squeeze them...

"Well we cleared one of the four suspects...The other two.. Mehhhhhh!" said Olivia.

"We cleared Agent Pete Marino..He has an airtight alibi....Dr. Brady was not only nasty, he refused to talk to us...."said Beverly...

"Brady lawyered up immediately and then our favorite Lieutenant showed up and slapped him with a subpeona."said Nelson..

"Well we checked Brady's phone records as Donnie Ray asked..He made several calls to Velma Davis in between 7:30 pm -9:00 pm and she made several calls to him.. His credit cards show he got gas at 8:30 pm from a gas station a mile away from that pool where she was found...He went to Bottom of the C. and had drinks from 10:00- 11:30... He then bought something from a near by Bodega...at around midnight and made several calls to Velma then....There are no return calls...And then..He's at the Airport, having drinks at the bar there at 1:00 am." said Josie.

"That actually clears him....So Velma's last call was at 9:00 pm..She made no more calls after that...I'm guessing she was murdered in between that time by 9:00 and 11:00. But his credit card charges for the night places him far away from her...He was at the airport...It was as if he was waiting for her or somebody..." I said.

"That was the other thing...We looked at his finances... The Doc was up to his eyeballs in debt...

Velma Davis-Rathbone bailed him out twice...she paid off his gambling debts and paid for him to go to Gamblers and Alcoholics Anonymous...She was embezzling funds from her faltering business.. We subpeoned the books like you asked Liv..." said Bresha...

"Hmmmm something is going on here or was." said Olivia.

"You think maybe she and the Doc were having an affair?/" asked Beverly...

"That's EXACTLY what I think!" said Olivia.

"Oh I'm certain of it... I think they were planning on meeting up...At the Airport.. Only she never showed. I'd stake my life on it." said Nelson. "They were planning on skipping town together." he added..

"She had two one way tickets to  the Caymen Islands and there was  two phony passports found with her made out to "Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Brady..."That safe was empty...Somebody had beat that safe , stole all of the money.." I said.

"We checked Brady's bank account...There has been no significant increase in any of his funds...Unless he's keeping that cash on him." said Josie..

"He could be...But I saw no evidence of it in his office...but who knows?" I said...

"Lunch is here guys!" said Alfreda.

She placed a tray of Italian Hoagies on our table... We dug in and chowed down!

IV-

"I'm glad you agreed to come to our office...I'm Donnie Ray Alexander.. I'm an investigator, these are the attorneys I work with, Attorneys who are representing Regina Jordan, the young lady accused of murdering your sister and your wife." I said.

It wasn't often we could get someone to actually come to our office and talk to us...Today, Floyd Rathbone, Husband of the late Velma Davis-Rathbone and her sister, Victoria Davis agreed to come to our office.. We could talk in ease and hopefully the annoying Lt. Tragg couldn't stop in with a subpeona.

"Hi, I'm Olivia Bennett-Alexander , Lead Attorney..

and this is my niece and co-lead attorney, Mrs. Beverly West-East..

Associate Attorney, Nelson East..Her husband...

Associate Attorney, Josie Boyd

And Associate Attorney, Bresha Williams." said Olivia.

''We know who you are...Who in Philadelphia doesn't? But we don't know any Regina Jordan."said Victoria Davis..

"Vickie stop it...Stop the lying....Yes we know Regina Jordan...John Sparks and I discovered her...The three of us, John, Velma and myself came up with the plan to have a stand in for Velma, swim half the channel down in Rehoboth Beach and then have Velma swim the rest of the distance to the shore as a publicity stunt and make it a news event..... This was designed to get us the funding to open a big Swim

school and Pool in the Wilmington area and possibly attract more members...To save what was left of her faltering business.." said Floyd.

"You have a very successful Real Estate Buisness and a Construction Company that is doing quite well." I said..

"But you leveraged a lot of cash into your wife's store and 10 clubs..." said Olivia.

"I did what I could to make her happy...Velma was an excellent swimmer...An Olympic Champion as you know Mrs. Bennett-Alexander....You competed against her...but she was a poor businesswoman and a poor wife.. She was miserable, She drank too much, she put on a fewpounds and was out of shape and she denied me the affections of a wife for a long time...and meanwhile her businesses were just hemoraging money and I was losing a pile trying to keep them afloat." said Floyd Rathbone..

"Did you know she was embezzling money from her own business and had created a pocket account and was transferring funds to the Caymen Islands ...a seperate account?" asked Beverly..

''We suspected it...but we didn't know for sure until after she was dead and we checked the books and hired a forensic accountant to do an audit...

"His name is Lawrence Stevenson...He's also an Attorney and a Forensic Accountant.." said Victoria.

"I've known Mr. Stevenson for years...Used him myself."said Olivia.

"Did you know your wife bought a pound of Dynamite and a Timer and placed it on Jack Sparks boat and she laced the hot broth with Barbituates?" asked Nelson..

They both looked shocked and horrified....

"WE DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THAT!!" said Floyd 

For the first time, Victoria Davis looked afraid...

"Look that wasn't part of the plan...Velma was supposed to be ON THAT BOAT WITH JOHNNY SPARKS!!  We were as shocked as anybody when the boat exploded..We didn't know what happened."said Victoria.

"Where were you guys?" asked Josie..

"I don't know if you know it...but Floyd and I are uh in love....It started out simple.. Floyd hasn't been able to keep his hands off of me since he and Velma came back from their honeymoon...Then it was once a month...Then it was whenever I visited them....Soon it was just s full blown out in the open affair.. My sister knew about it... She's no angel..She was doing her thing too, with Johnny Sparks and Tim Brady...and a couple of horny lifeguards...

After Regina dove into the water , 

Johnny kept asking where was Velma.. No one had seen her that day...

I gave him one Thermos and told him to follow her anyway...She'd need that hot broth after hours of swimming.. I had no idea it was laced with barbituates...There was two Thermos's...I mistakenly only gave him one...

He waited for Velma...When she didn't show up..He decided to go on without her..." said Victoria..

''So what did you two do?" asked Bresha.

Victoria blushed......

"The Interior of that yacht is fabulous...You had to see it.. After they left...

Floyd and I started kissing..

Floyd and I were out of our clothes in minutes..

"That's true...We were on that Yacht, Docked in the bay all night.... We didn't know about the explosion or Velma's murder in Philly until the next day when we saw it on the news...

We had breakfast in that uh little seaside grille...You can ask them or check our credit card records..We didn't return to Philly until later that day..." said Victoria.

I had already checked their financials...Their story checked out...They were telling the truth Neither one of them killed Velma...

Later that day....After Floyd Rathbone and Victoria Davis had gone...We all sat around our conference room table.

discussing a defense strategy...

"This looks bad guys...Our client is the only person that doesn't have an alibi and was at the scene..."said Nelson.

"Those two horny toads never left that yacht..They were screwing each others brains out deep into the morning and had breakfast there in Deleware , completely unaware of what had transpired.."said Bresha.

"Pete Marino dropped Johnny Sparks off at the hospital and then dropped Regina off and then had drinks with Dabnis and Jazzy and Kayla and Ray at the Mermaid Crab Tavern until well after 2:00 am." said Beverly...

''And we know the Good Doctor  was halfway across the city and waiting for her at the Airport from his credit cards and his frantic phone calls/" said Olivia.

"And Jack Sparks was in the hospital...He couldn't have done it!" said Josie.

"Or was he?  We only have his word....I'm going to check him out some more." I said.

Olivia kissed me passionately..

"Mmmmmmmmmm you've got to learn to trust someone other than me and Bev." she said...
