JoAnne's Diner

The Restaurant appeared to be a greasy spoon on the ground floor of an old building...but it may very well have been one of the city's best kept secrets...It was in the Northern Liberties section of the city,commonly known as "Fishtown"
 

It appeared to have the best burgers known to man or woman...

''Oh My God, This is delish....We've got to tell Donnie Ray and Auntay and bring the rest of the gang here." said Beverly.

"These Hole in the wall diners are always diamonds in the rough....I'll bet they serve a good breakfast or brunch too!"said Nelson.

"I'm betting you're right Nelson.. We all have got to come back here for breakfast one weekend."said Beverly's cousin and fellow attorney, Kayla Bennett-St. Jacques.

"Yeah we can come here one Saturday when we don't feel like arguing with Lt. Tragg."laughed her husband, Ray.

''Don't bring him up...I haven't seen him in a month and it's been good." said Jazzy.

"Ummmmmmmmm this Burger is to die for." said Jazzy's husband, Dabnis..

Their friend, Raylene Quivers smiled.. It was good seeing her old law school friends, Beverly. Kayla and Jasmine and meeting their husbands...

She was there with her boyfriend, of two years, Travis Carter....She was no longer the fat friend with three fine girlfriends..She had lost a lot of weight and worked out and learned how to properly use make up and gotten her hair done and now she was a fox, a head turner...

Also there was another college friend, Abby Wilson, or rather Mrs. Albert Williams.

They had gotten married a few months ago, she had left the District Attorneys office and was working with her husband at The Tobin Law Firm...

Attorney JoAnne Starke, former Federal Public Defender, Now an attorney with the Robert Foxworth Law Firm had brought them all together,,, She had recently lost a case to Olivia and Beverly and their team..

in Federal Court....

She had had the utmost respect for them and she was proud of Beverly , being the co founding partner of a successful law firm

 JoAnne  had met with Beverly, who she hadn't seen in years and found out Beverly ,

Jazzy and Kayla all lived on the same street and worked together from time to time..

 Beverly kept her word and contacted Kayla and Jazzy and also got in contact with 

Abby and Raylene, who also attended PENN Law school with them...

She told them to bring their husbands and significant others...She wanted to meet them...All of them were married to Attorneys too....She didn't find that too surprising... She didn't have a man...Not a steady man.....She hoped to be like them, settled down and married too one day...

"I discovered this place, believe it or not when I was in law school with yall... I'm surprised it's still here." said JoAnne with a smile.. Hard to believe she was trying to kill Olivia, Beverly and crew just a week ago in court.

''You always were a loner. We thought you didn't like us." said Jazzy.

" Nahhh..You guys had each other... You Beverly and Kayla were always together...You studied together ,Ate together,,,everything...Oh yeah and Raylene and Mya...You five were a little clique..." said JoAnne.

"Those five were....I didn't like Mya... She was snooty....but I was surprised to find out she was a ..Mass Murderer...Wowwwwwwww!" said Abby.

"That blew all of our minds..." said Raylene Quivers..

"Where is she?" asked JoAnne.

''She's in the Women's Federal Prison in California, near San Diego."said Kayla.

''She turned in States Evidence and got 20 years to Life on Federal Charges and a Life sentence on state charges in Pennsylvania." explained Beverly...

"She fooled us all...You remember she dropped out...She told us that she finished up at Darmouth and passed the bar there.. It was all a lie. She lied to us all."said Jazzy...

"Good Riddance." said Raylene, who like Jazzy caught the brunt of Mya's jabs and barbs during Law school..

The Atmosphere was kind of cold.......

There was a need to warm the room up!

"Let's talk about something pleasent....Look at all these handsome men with you guys...How did you meet?" asked JoAnne.

''Nelson and I have known each other our entire professional lives... I met him at the Public Defenders Office when I went to work with my Auntay." said Beverly...

"It was love at first sight." said Nelson...

''For him...You know me..It took me a little longer..to realize I can't live without him.."said Beverly ,hugging Nelson..

''Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww" said JoAnne.

"I knew this guy here for years...We were just friends...We'd have drinks and I'd talk to him about other guys I was dating...He was always my guy...If my car broke down..he was the guy I'd call and he'd come and get me..My best friend.. I had no idea he liked me and then one day after going through the worst time of my life, there he was and there I was and we fell in love."said Jazzy.

''I never thought I had a shot..Until one day , I had a shot...I couldn't believe it...And look at us, married."said Dabnis.

''We actually met on a plane back to Philly.. If you remember, I got a job offer in Atlanta... I was there for a number of years...So Was Ray...and surprisingly enough, our paths never crossed... I got a job offer in Philly and so did he and as fate would have it..We were both on the same plane ,moving back to Philly."said Kayla..

"Yup! Fate!"laughed Ray ,putting his arms around Kayla.

''Awwwww I love these stories...and Raylene, look at you.." laughed JoAnne.

Raylene giggled..

''We work at the same law firm... I'd had my eye of Raylene for close to a year...but I didn't get the courage to say anything to her until she was on trial for murder...A murder it turned out your old college chum, Maya committed." said Travis.

''We actually met in Aqua Bar of all places.

"She spilled a drink on me to get my attention." laughed her husband, Albert..

"I did not...It was an accident..."laughed Abby and everyone else...

"She insisted on paying for my dry cleaning...We got to talking, found out we were both attorneys and the rest is as they say, History...She's had my attention ever since.."laughed Albert..

"Ohhhhhh that's beautiful...That's the best story yet.." said JoAnne..

As more Onion Rings and Burgers arrived..

''So.....There is No Man in your life JoAnne?" asked Beverly...

"Nah, I've been a workaholic for the past few years...There is a man who uh kinda likes me I think...but I'm not sure...I'm just glad to run into you guys...." said JoAnne.

"We are going to a skating rink in Bayside next Saturday Night...Here is the address. Come and bring your guy...It'll be a good time." said Kayla..

"Yeah, you should come...You'll meet the rest of our little extended family.....You should come too, Abby, Al, Raylene, Travis...It'll be a good time...And there will be food...We are bringing our own food, sodas and beer...And this place has D.J.'s" said Jazzy..

"My Auntay rented us out a section for my mother's birthday party....She's going to be there with her boyfriend..She works with us...She's our Office Manager..Please come." said Beverly.

"Next Saturday?? I'm not doing anything...I'm Never doing anything. It's a date...I'm off from work that Friday...I'll buy something nice to wear,." said JoAnne....

The Rest of the visit was very pleasent...

They had no idea that JoAnne lived walking distance from the Diner they had all met and lunched in..

In a beautiful condo...

It used to be a warehouse... It had been gutted and the interiors were gorgeous.

She had just sat down and taken her heels off when her doorbell rang...

She checked her monitor to see who it was and she smiled and buzzed him up..

A White male walked into her condo...

He kissed her passionately... His name was Ryan Anthony, An Attorney who lived a few blocks from her and who worked with a firm in Center City...They met while working on a case together a few months ago... he was immediately smitten with her.. She didn't understand it ,nor want it to happen..

His taste in Music and Movies and Television were the same as hers and yet they hadn't so much as kissed until a few days before...and they hadn't slept together yet...

She knew he was crazy about her and she was beginning to fall for him..and yet that elephant was in the room.. He was White!!!

All of her former law school classmates had found love and marriage in the arms of Black men...Black men who were attorneys like them...

Ryan of course had heard of Olivia, Beverly and their storied crew..and was happy to meet them and Jazzy and her husband..

They met the rest of Beverly, Jazzy and Kayla's "Extended Family"...

Jessica Sanchez-Burrows, a Latina Attorney, Married to a Black man, Charles "Chip" Burrows.

Sofia Garcia-Ahmed, Another Latina Attorney, Married to an Arab Attorney, Kahlil Ahmed.

And an Asian couple, Jade Lee and Danny Ho...

JoAnne was surprised and elated to see that her three law school friends worked and lived closely to multi-racial couples and people and considered them friends... Her having a white boyfriend didn't seem like such a big deal right now..

Three Cold Cut Trays arrived with rolls, Mayo and Mustard for sandwiches ,Beer and Hot wings arrived from the caterer...

More Guests showed up... Raylene Quivers and Travis, Abby and Albert, Zoey and Lem all wandered in just as the food was arriving..

Everybody was either eating or skating......

The Birthday cake arrived as well as the Birthday Girl, Alfreda Johnson... Beverly's mother and the Office manager for the law firm she and her Aunt Ran...She was a beautiful woman, She saw where Beverly got her good looks from.

She was a beautiful woman who had a much younger boyfriend, who JoAnne recognized as an Assistant District Attorney.

Former Attorney, now Office Manager for a law firm , Virginia Shaw arrived with her boyfriend, Retired Judge, and sitting member of the Legal Ethics Board, Judge Jetty Dukes.. JoAnne's former law school friends knew some heavy hitters...She was impressed and proud of them..

Champaigne arrived and Glasses....

This was the biggest event of all that Beverly and Olivia had planned...

"This is so much fun...I really like your friends.." said Ryan.

"I'm glad you're enjoying yourself.." she said and smiled, squeezing his hand softly.

Except For Jetty, who was watching from the sidelines and laughing....

everybody was skating to the sounds of the D.J.'s spinning classic Hip Hop and Funk..

"I'm so glad I listened to you and decided to have this here instead of Curleys...."said Beverly to her cousin, Kayla..

"We couldn't have enjoyed ourselves at Curleys.. Lt. Tragg would've been there whining and brow beating us and someone would have wound up clocking him and he'd be in the parking lot to see who was driving under the influence..or something.. Here, everybody can relax and have a good time.."said Kayla..

"Beverly, thank you for inviting me...Us...I'm having a great time..."said JoAnne.

"You sure your boyfriend is white? He got a little rhythm, look at him working out" laughed Kayla as they skated..

Ray, Nelson, Ryan, Dabnis, Tony, Paris Chip, Rockland, Albert, Travis, Keith and Kahlil and Danny Ho were skating backwards and then forwards to the music...in perfect synchronation...

Alfreda, Josie, Bresha, Bee Bee, Sofia, Jazzy, Jessica  Jade  and Raylene joined the guys and put on a show, Skating backwards and then forwards to the beats of the music...

Olivia and Donnie Ray, Yvette and Gary and Lem and Zoey skated to the couples skate as they slowed the music down...

They had rented a whole section to themselves and got permission to bring in their own food and beverages..

They had the booking until closing at 2:00 AM.

All of the Food and most of the beverages were consumed..A Great time was had by all..

Most of the people had come on two Buses, owned by Olivia and Beverly's law firm.. and a catering van...They filed out of the parking lot... Those that drove began to slowly file out..

"Here come our orders now."said Ray.

"I remember this place.. I grew up not far from here." said Jessica.

"Oh Yeah?" asked her husband Ray.

"Beverly raved about this place so much so I kept the Buses around and we all got up and came here today....Best way to end a weekend." said Olivia.

''We don't always eat with an oppossing attorney this soon after a trial..but we like you JoAnne, we made an exception." said Donnie Ray.

''Awww I like you guys too!" said JoAnne.

"We are back on the same side now..Defense Attorneys.." said Bresha.

Her husband Tony laughed. "Funny how things work out." He said.

'Yes isn't it?" said Alfreda, rubbing Rockland's hands softly..

Rockland smiled...

"A Nice Sunday Breakfast with no bother from Lt. Tragg...Perfect."said Josie.

"A Saturday Night Party without him too..He must be going crazy."laughed Paris.

"It's going on two months since he's seen us.."said Yvette.

"Good, Let's keep it that way as long as we can." said her husband, Gary.

"You know I remember this place.. It's now basically a Hipster's joint..."said Keith Jones.

"I remember this place.. I grew up not far from here." said Bee Bee.

"Yeah, me too! "I remember this place.. I grew up not far from here." said Sofia...

"I remember it too...I was in Port Richmond.. But I'd been in here before.. The food is good.. The Neighborhood was a lot different then..

"Nice What you Americans would call a "Homey" Place.

"Exactly." said Danny Ho.

"Here comes our orders.." said Virginia.
