"You know Livy I think I've figured this thing out...It was staring us in the face the entire time..." I said.

'This case...Think about it...It's Homicide 101...Forget about the murder for a minute...Let's look at the whole thing.....This guy..Sam Dole who doesn't know B.L. , As far as I can see...Their paths have never crossed...Yet he doles out money to a P.I. to follow him and a girl on his payroll,....She feeds him a phony story and roofies him...Takes him to a sleazy motel and strips him naked and she strips naked and poses with him in suggestive damning photos...right?"I said.
''Right ,I'm with you so far.."said Olivia.
"The photos are taken by the P.I. who then pays off the Girl.....And the photos aren't given to the press or media or even his television station...They're given to his girlfriend....and her only....Now think about it...This Sam Dole has no bone to pick with Karen Page....She never prosecuted him...She doesn't even know him....He has no bone to pick with B.L. either.. He doesn't know him...So what does he get out of this? Nothing...Which brings us to Detective Grisly..May he rest in peace... I'm thinking Detective Grisly is the String puller... He paid Dole to find the girl and pay the girl....He paid Dole to enlist Burt Vandeburg's services...Both Burt and Doreen took their marching orders from Dole...but Dole had to be working for someone else...Detective Grisly..." I said.
''So let's take Beverly's idea.. Say the murder is completely separate..Separate from the set up...An unrelated crime of convenience for somebody... Grisly is scared and uptight...He can't be drawn into this..Not at all... He goes to A.C. to shut Dole up....Burt never saw him...Doreen is dead and even alive, she never saw him...But Dole is the one person who can put him in this mess..but now both Dole and Doreen are dead.." said Olivia...
''Which brings me back to who is the real String puller..The person you never see behind the scenes, the person who benefits the most from this..Take a guess."I said.
"Oh My God!!! Lieutenant Tragg??" said Olivia..
"EXACTLY!!! He hates B.L. with a passion....He's got the hots for B.L.'s girl, Karen and he sets B.L. up and Karen dumps him and he's in hog heaven....He didn't figure on a murder being committed..and he probably had nothing to do with that....But he was the money behind Grisly...Grisly set this whole thing up at Tragg's command... Tragg has lucked out because now Grisley, Doreen and Dole are dead...and since all the payments were cash transactions...Nothing will ever come back to Tragg...This plot was so brilliant..I can't believe Tragg pulled it off." I said.
"Me neither!...You know we can't prove any of this...Don't you?" said Olivia..
"I know...Let's just get B.L. off.... This is low, even for Tragg…" I said.
"Now how bout we get each other off" she said ,looking at me devilishly...
"That's a good idea.." I said..
"I thought it would be..." she whispered and ran her soft fingers over my lips..

Judge Tad Thornton watched Olivia and Beverly's faces.. Their expressions, their silent nods of approval, their nods of non-acceptance... He still after all these years thought both women were very sexy and regretted not sleeping with one or both of them....
He felt that Nelson and I were very lucky to be married to them...
He knew exactly what was going on....He was amused greatly....
He thought Chris Garcetti was a goofball personally....He just shook his head..
Olivia, Beverly and Nelson got all 12 jurors that they wanted... Young , Urbane, People of Color, Women et al...
For a week Chris Garcetti wasted the jury's time and his by creating a false narrative of B.L. Benz as a crazed celebrity who got drunk and realized he was in a compromising position with a prostitute and killed her in a frightened rage...
Olivia and Beverly found this laughable and asked what would make him feel as though he was in a compromised situation with a prostitute...He had no idea he was being photographed and he had been drugged..
They showed the Urinalysis and the results from the drink glasses that proved he'd been roofied...
The police on the scene and the CSI personel and Medical examiners personel all gave the factual evidence..
Nelson got them to admit that with the amount of rohypnol in B.L.'s system that night..It was very doubtful that he could do anything...especially not murder someone..
Chris was having a hard time getting anyone to refute these findings...
He closed with an eloquent but somehow unconvincing argument and asked the Jury to find B.L. Benz, guilty of First degree murder..Saying B.L. regardless of how you feel about him otherwise was the only person who could have murdered Doreen Clark that night.
"The way I see it girls..It's 12 -0 to acquit right now!"said Nelson..
"Auntay...Let's not wait....Let's hit em hard tomorrow.." said Beverly..
"Yes Neicey Poo..Let's.." said Olivia..
Josie and I concurred..

Olivia, Beverly and Nelson began thier defense of B.L. the next day...…. These three had known each other since they were Public defenders...They worked like a well oiled machine...never getting in each others way....It was scary how efficient they worked...How smooth....
We pointed out that in addition to being a T.V. Personality...B.L. had done much to spotlight wrongful convictions and has been hailed as a hero by both the ACLU and the Innocence Project... We pointed out that he is also a noted Attorney...
We brought in unrefutable character witnesses...
As usual Josie took copious notes and kept Livy, Beverly and Nelson informed on everything..
They brought in several people at the motel who had seen Doreen drag an unconscious B.L. into their room..
They brought up the reports that the semen in her panties and inside of her was not B.L.'s it was another mans and suggested that she had sex with another man that night...
The irrefutable scientific proof was right there...
Try as he may, Chris Garcetti couldn't dispute their testimonies...Never had so many things gone wrong in one of his cases so much and so fast...
Olivia, Beverly ,Josie and Nelson had taken this case apart bit by bit like a surgeon and left no stone unturned...They weren't surprised by anything....and were continuing to hit Chris with surprises...
I sat back and smiled..
ADA Karen Page was at the trial everyday....She was impressed with Olivia and Beverly's thoroughness but more so , She now knew that B.L.
was innocent!! He hadn't lied to her or cheated on her with another woman...It was obvious he had been set up....
She glared at Lt. Tragg….
She didn't believe he had had anything to do with a murder....She somehow couldn't bring herself to believe that he didn't have anything to do with this...The dead cop had been with him that night at the restaurant and seemed very upset about something...She glared angrily at him..
Lt. Tragg was sweating bullets...He looked very nervous!
Our best witness was P.I. Burt Vandenburg...
He testified to being paid to follow and photograph B.L. Benz and Doreen Clark by the now deceased Samuel Dolen...
He didn't know that Doreen was going to drug him... His job was just to get incriminating photographs..
Chris Garcetti went at him hard, asking him if he always associated with known criminals and helped them to set up innocent unsuspecting people.
Burt stated that he didn't know Samuel Dolen previously and he thought he was just a jealous and suspicious husband...Which he found out after the fact was a lie...which was why he came forward and agreed to help B.L.'s defense...
This line of questioning was helping us more than hurting us..
Judge Thornton looked at Olivia and Beverly...He was waiting for them to object...but they were nearly laughing..He suddenly understood why...and he shook his head and smiled.
They couldn't believe his line of questioning..
Neither could Judge Thornton, who smiled ruefully...
Nelson showed the jury the photos of B.L., now blown up on a 56 inch monitor...He pointed to B.L.
"It's obvious he's unconscious.."he said..
Josie and I watched as they rested their case after three days...
Chris Garcetti glared at Lt. Tragg.,..
"How did you miss the results of the Urinalysis and the semen in the panties...?" he said.
"It was in discovery...HOW DID YOU MISS IT?" he asked correctly.. He hated ADA Chris Carcetti (and the feeling was mutual...) He was actually pulling for Olivia, Beverly and company to win...He knew in his heart of hearts that B.L. Benz was no murderer..
Yvette and Karen sat in the spectators section every day of the trial..
Lt. Tragg stared at Karen dreamily...longingly...

He demanded that the jury be polled..
They were and all twelve said NOT GUILTY!!
Chris tossed his jacket up in the air..He kicked the table...
"I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS!!!! OH MY GODDD!" he screamed out!!!
"Dude!!! Duddde! You need to get laid! Take it easssy! " said Judge Thornton....laughing his head off..
"Olivia, Beverly...I owe you my life, my freedom..I love you.."said B.L. , kissing and hugging Olivia and Beverly...
"Drinks on you at Red Booth.. Just joking.."said Olivia..
"All in a days work."said Beverly..
"I'm happy for you man.." I said, hugging B.L.
"Me too"said Nelson, also hugging him...
B.L.hugged and kissed Josie on the cheek..
"I can't wait for you to become an Attorney..." he gushed..
Karen walked over to him...
"Hi Baby!" she said seductively....
They kissed passionately...
Yvette and Gary smiled and looked on...
The Press snapped our photos...B.L. and his defense team...
and asked for quotes of course.....
They wanted a quote from ADA Chris Garcetti, but he was too distraught to make a statement....
They got a great photo of B.L. getting a congratulatory kiss from his girlfriend, ADA Karen Page.
Lt. Tragg looked on... He had moved mountains to try and get to Karen...It had cost people their lives..None of that was supposed to happen...and after all of that...He had still failed..Perhaps his was the greatest loss..Perhaps it was just time to move on...
For once, the press corps weren't bothering him...weren't asking him for a quote...He blended into the crowd...
He slipped out of the side door of the court and walked away... A slight rain began to pour...The rain hid his tears..
EPILOUGE-
One week later...Police arrested Reverend Donnie Clark...The estranged husband of Doreen Clark and he confessed to killing her..
He had followed her to that motel...When he saw B.L. lying on the bed unconscious , he went into a rage...He raped her...and murdered her...The semen in her panties and inside of hers was his...It was a DNA match,along with the fingerprints found..
He denied knowing Samuel Dolen, Detective Mike Grisly or B.L. Bemz… He denied knowing Private Investigator Burt Vandenburg or knowing anything about any set up...
B.L. ran a story on him...His first week back on the air...
With that...The Mystery of who set B.L. up remains just that , a mystery...
Except to those of us who know..
This time , we had a "Freedom Party" for B.L. at Red Booth..
