The Better Half

Steaming Hot Cups of coffee were poured....

The smell was entrancing..

We were at a coffee shop, A new coffee shop that Ms. Yvette had turned us on to...

''Vettie girl, you were right..This is great coffee..This is our second time here though..."said Olivia.

"I told you Livy....I was here a few weeks ago...I loved this coffee. we all ought to start hanging out here."said Yvette Lockwood.

"Mmmmmm this is good coffee. Yeash, I remember from the last time we were here.." said Beverly...

"I have to know...How are the Pastries?" I asked.
"Ohhh I have some coming..You can see for yourself "said Yvette Lockwood..

'With Coffee this good I don't even care, but I know you do Nelson...."laughed Olivia..

"Yes...I have always had a sweet tooth....Why do you think I love your niece so much?" laughed Nelson..

''Awwwwwww, he'll say anything to get some later.."laughed Beverly..

Josie cracked up laughing..

"Well, does it work?" asked Yvette..

"Tell the truth!" chided Olivia, her aunt.

"Yes..!" said Beverly, blushing and smiling sheepishly...

at Ms. Yvette and Her Aunt Olivia...both women , who were more like Big sisters to her and responsible for her being an Attorney...

"Here come the pastries Nelson." said Josie.

"WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!" said Nelson.

A Pastry Tray arrived .....

"Ohhhhhhh myyyyyyyyyyy" I said.

"Ouuuuuu that looks scrumptious."said Olivia.

"Mmmmmmmmmmmm this is delish.."said Beverly...
"Thanks Ms. Yvette.." said Nelson..
"Yesss...Thanks.." said Josie.

"Oh no problem....I couldn't keep something like this from you guys..."said Yvette.

"Sitting across the room from us was a person, a future adversary ,who we didn't know was watching us..

New Assistant District Attorney, Diane Baronski , who had just come to town from Boston....She had had a 100-0 record in Boston and had come to Philadelphia and lost her first case to Yvette Jones-Lockwood and her crew of Keith Jones, Beatrice Evans- Jones, Kahlil Ahmed, Sofia Garcia- Ahmed and Jade Lee.

She was still smarting from that defeat....It had been weeks ago and she had won 10 cases since then., still she smarted from that one defeat in court.
She observed us at our table drinking coffee and enjoying the pastries..She was sitting with former FBI Agent, Now Private Investigator, Bert Vandenberg..

who had done investigatory work for her as well as share her bed numerous times since had gotten here.

''What's on your mind Diane?" he asked.
"I see Yvette Lockwood over there...Do you know who her guests are?" asked Diane..

He laughed.. "Oh yeah...That's Olivia Bennett-Alexander

and her niece,

Beverly West-East... They're Defense Attorneys...Among the best in the city... Yvette Jones and Olivia were room-mates in Law School, they're very close..

That guy there is Nelson East, also an Attorney, very good...He is a protoge' of Olivia's...They worked together at the Public Defender's Office...He's married to her niece, Beverly and an associate attorney at their law firm..
That man there is Olivia's husband...Donnie Ray Alexander, ex homicide detective, Now her firm's principal Investigator..
And that little lady is Josie Boyd, Another protoge' of Olivia and Beverly...Just finished law school last year and passed the bar...The newest attorney on their team." said Bert...

"Interesting.." said Diane.. "I've actually heard of them...They've tried a number of big cases around the country.  I actually heard Olivia give an impassioned speech in Boston, two years ago during a big hearing..I've always wanted to meet her and her niece...."said Diane.

"I know them....Do you want to meet them?" asked Bert..

"No Not yet....I'm sure our paths will cross eventually...."said Diane, observing us..

She didn't know how right she was.

A DAY LATER-

A Huge crowd is assembled at a local Black Bookstore..

They are all here to get a copy of the hot new book "Marriage In Black and White " by Husband and wife team, Aida and Billy Gleason.. who had written several other books on being a modern African-American couple..
"That Lecture was so on point, All the good points they made about marriage and relationships."said Kayla Bennett-St. Jacques.
"I knowwwwwwww....It was so cool that you got us all autographed copies Boo Boo."said Beverly ,calling her cousin and fellow attorney Kayla Bennett St, Jacques by her childhood nickname for her..

"Hey Nelson...I just hope after wasting my time with this boring lecture and book signing, Boo Boo gives  me some Boo Boo  when we get home.."whispered Kayla's husband, and fellow Attorney Ray St. Jacques.
Nelson laughed.. "Those two seem like the perfect couple...No couple is THAT together that perfect...I bet you one of them is cheating.."laughed Nelson, Beverly's husband.

"They seem so ....so in tune...I hope you and I will be that in tune Dabnis.." said Jasmine "Jazzy" Coley, another Attorney friend of ours..

"We are in tune baby.." laughed Dabnis..hugging his wife...

Attorney Chip Burrows laughed and pinched his wife Jessica's butt..

"OUUUUUUUUUUUUU... Cut it out!" Jessica Sanchez- Burrows  laughed and playfully swatted her husband...

"I like that...Couples should never lose their youthful sense of play and lust...Isn't that right baby?" said one half of the writing duo..Billy Gleason..

"Ohhhh that's right.." said Carla Gray...

and they kissed passionately....

"I've got no problem with that at all." said Keith Jones to his new wife, Beatrice Evans-Jones.

"Oh I know you don't.." laughed Bee Bee..

"Oh Me neither.."laughed Kahlil..

"Ohhhh I know..I know..." said Sofia Garcia-Ahmed..

"Come on Guys...Let's get out of here...Let's go to Jake's, get some of his fantastic Hot Dogs.."said Beverly...As the 12 people , all married couples left the seminar....

After everyone cleared out...Billy Gleason smiled.

"Aida, this book is selling better than the last book we wrote...We are making millions..." he said gleefully..
Aida sighed...

"Yes I know....We have one more book on our contract and then that's it..." she said.

Billy's phone rang....

Billy smiled sheepishly...almost blushing..

"Uh that was Byron...uh..I've gotta go." he said.

"Ahhhhhhh okay....but when you come home...There are uh two things we have to talk about okay?" said Aida..

"Okay....I promise.." said Billy...

"Hey Guys.....I smell money..." said their business manager and accountant, Rudy Collins..

''Heyyy  Rudy...Sorry, I can't talk..Gotta Run.!"said Billy.

''Glad you're here Rudy...WE NEED TO TALK!" said Aida.

"Oh Yeah? About what?" asked Rudy, still smiling.

III-

It was midnight..Beverly and Nelson were still out with their friends..

Olivia and I were home, alone in our domicile, acting like a married couple....

It was a nice unseasonably warm winter night....
"Nothing on TV....You got anything in mind to do?" asked Olivia..
"You know what I want to do.." I said, staring at her...

It was that kind of night....It began on the living room floor

Olivia and I wasted no time getting out of our clothes and winding up on the living room floor..going at each other in reckless abandon...

"Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.....Donnie Rayyyyyyyyyyyy....Ummmmmmmmmmm husband.........OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" she cooed...
and escalated to our couch!

"UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMPH!" I moaned..

"OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH GOOOOOOOOOD LAWWWWWWDDDD DONNIE RAYYYY!" she moaned..

"OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MYYYYYYYYYY GODDDDDDDD OLIVIA!!!! OHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" I cried out loud as I held her petite body in my arms and long stroked her..

"OUUUUUUUUUUUU HOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO
OUUUUUU...OHHHHHHH MY GODDDDDD DONNNIE RAY...AYYYYYEEE..AYYYYEEE...
OUUUU AYE Yi YIIIIIIII!"screamed Olivia..

"UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!! DON'T STOPPPPP!!! DON'T STOPPPPP!
OUUUUUUUUUUUUU!"moaned Olivia, who had had several intense orgasms...moving up and down on me and kissing me as if she was trying to absorb my lips...

We finally made it into the bedroom.....We made love like this the next EIGHT TO NINE HOURS!

Olivia was very passionate..she was letting all of that pent up anxiety, all that disappointment, all that frustration out in the bedroom and I for one was enjoying it.

While at the Bookstore..

"She bled out...That's a perfect cut...Her throat was slit....."exclaimed a Crime Scene Investigator..

"Time of death is around uh 10:30 pm.." said Dr. Hazel Baylor....

"Looks like she struggled with her killer...Her watch is broke and look at the time...10:25 pm...You were right on the money Hazel.." said Lt. Tragg, kneeling down and looking at the body.. Who is she?"asked Lt. Tragg.

"She's one half of the most successful Husband and Wife writing duo...This is Aida Gleeson..Her and her husband, Billy Gleeson are the authors of "Married While Black" , "When A Marriage Fails" , "Love and Marriage ", "Sex and the Married Man", Sex and the Married Woman.""Marriage in Black and White" and "Married and In Tune", they've made millions and sold millions over the years...They have a Podcast and an hour long weekly Radio Show."gushed Hazel, who owned all seven of the couple;s self help books.

''You sound like a fan.. Where is the Husband?" asked Lt. Tragg..

"No one has located him...He wasn't at their home.."said a Forensics Specialist...

Lt. Tragg looked at his detectives...

"Find him, ASAP!" he said.

"We are on it boss." they said.

"Alright, bag her and tag her...Hazel , have that autopsy report on my desk as soon as possible."said Lt. Tragg..

They put the body of Aida Gleeson in a body bag ,strapped it to a gurney and rolled her out..

A tear ran down Hazel's face...She really loved the books written by this couple...

"What a sad way to end their love story.." she thought..

IV-

The next morning...Olivia and Beverly had just finished an intense negotiation...Our clients had left..

"That was a potentially dull case, but I hope you learned from that Josie...8 out of 10 of our cases are dull like that..When I left the Public Defender's Office and went to work at a corporate firm, I had to get used to this kind of litigation.

"I found it interesting...I did learn a lot from this."said Josie.
"I know Jo, but we've done like three of these litigations in a row and you hunger for just a good ole murder case, don'tcha where we would be back in court."laughed Beverly.

"Well, we've been here at the office and we've been cooking a lot more and eating out less, which means we've seen a lot less of Lt. Tragg.."said Nelson..

"That's always a good thing.." I laughed and said..

Our doorbell rang..

"I got it "said Alfreda, our office manager and Beverly's mother.

William "Billy" Gleeson walked in...He was wearing the exact same suit he had on the night before..and he looked disheveled ....
"Billy Gleeson?"said Beverly, nearly star struck..

"Oh My God...Billy and Aida Gleeson...I have two of your Books, "Sex and the Married Woman" and Sex and the Married Man." said an equally star struck Olivia.

''She didn't need to read his books on that....I've been teaching her that almost every night." I jokingly whispered to Nelson
''We all went to his and his wife's book signing last night.."said Nelson to me..

"I'm here because I may need your help...My wife.....My wife, Aida...She's been murdered...Last night...in the bookstore...I wasn't there...Someone slit her throat....."he said, crying uncontrollably...
"I fear I 'm going to need legal counsel...I was told you two are the best..." he said.

"OH MY GOD!!! AIDA, MURDERED!!! I so wanted to meet her...She, She was so in tune to what women feel during marriage..."said Olivia...

"I knowwww right...Not that you weren't on point too, but I read your books and you both really got it...I mean ,I was sooooooo impressed....And the books were written so a layman could understand.."said Beverly..

"You said you weren't around.....You were gone all night? And your wife was murdered in the Bookstore.??" I asked.

"I assure you I have an explanation....but believe me...I didn't kill my wife...I loved my wife..I really did..I swear!" said Billy Gleeson..

"Liv, Bev, Donnie Ray...We have company..."said Josie.

Two police cars parked in opposite directions faced each other in front of our doors..
"Ohhhhhhhh hell...It's you know who."said Beverly..
"Billy, take the arrest, say nothing..exercise your right to remain silent...We'll be down."said Olivia.
"Gotta hand it to Lt. Tragg, he's on the case..." laughed Nelson..

Alfreda let him in without saying anything to him...

"Well Hello Liv, Happy New Year....You have once again, made my job easy..."laughed Lt. Tragg..

"Always happy to oblige." said Olivia sarcastically....

"No smart alec remarks Bev?" he asked.

Beverly said nothing...

''Well then...Let's get after it...William Gleeson, you are under arrest for the murder of your wife, Aida
Gleeson, You have the right to remain silent...If you give up this right, anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..You have a right to an Attorney, which I see you have already attained...Hook him up boys..."he said as two uniformed policemen handcuffed him...

William Gleeson held his head down..

"Sit Tight...We'll be down.."said Nelson..

"Remember what I said..Say nothing.."said Olivia..

Josie motioned to Beverly to come to the window....

"That Narcissistic Bastard!!" said Beverly angrily...

"Wow! We are starting behind the 8 ball."said Nelson..

I just shook my head, but said nothing..

The press, every TV station in the city was outside snapping photos.

As Lt. Tragg walked William Gleeson out of our house in handcuffs...They were photographed and a throng of reporters asked him if he had killed his wife..He was stoic...He said nothing..

''Once again, we are attorneys in the trial of the century.." mused Olivia..

"I don't believe he did this...I just don't.. He adored Aida and she adored him.."said Beverly..

"He said he was out all night...I assume that is his alibi..Let's hear it." I said.

"Well Josie..We got a murder case...Nothing boring about this."said Nelson..
"I know right?" said Josie.
