Larry North was full of surprises...He knew we hadn't bought any groceries, So after dinner...He took Olivia,Beverly and I to an all night market

 and allowed us to do our grocery shopping..Then he drove us back to our Air BNB and helped us put everything away...

He then left without incident... Unknown to us...He had called Philadelphia to find out what flight Nelson and Josie were coming in on and was there bright and early in the morning to pick them both up and bring them to our place..

We were more than surprised....

"Good I'm glad you didn't cook...I know a nice place you all will love for breakfast" he said..

Josie looked at Beverly

Beverly shrugged her shoulders..

Nelson looked at Olivia and Me..

Olivia smiled..

I shrugged my shoulders too..

He took us to a place called the Original San Francisco Pancake House...

"Good food here..A lot of Attorneys and Politicians eat and meet here.." he said..

We all had large stacks of Pancakes...with Strawberries or Blue berries as garnish

Hot steaming tumblers of coffee... As you can guess...We chowed down...

''Larry, you are two for two...The food is delicious."said Beverly...

"I'll say..." added Nelson , who was chowing down with one hand and had his other hand around Beverly's waste...She looked at her husband and smiled lovingly...

"This is sooo nice...Thank you Larry...You have to come and have dinner with us tonight...The only way we can pay you back for being so hospitable." said Olivia..

"Yeah man.." I said..

"Awww thanks...But you guys are my friends...You're a taste of home.." he said and smiled..

He looked at Josie..

"Soooo you're in Law School huh? How's that going?" he asked.

"I like it just fine.." said Josie..

"You've had three of the finest teachers right here at this table...I'm sure you'll be a fine attorney.." said Larry..

Josie smiled weakly and then whispered to Olivia and Beverly...

"Okay....who is this? Where is the real Larry North?"

Olivia and Beverly cracked up laughing...

As we sipped our coffees Larry North brought us up to date on the case...

"Our client's name is Dr. Joseph Coles...He's an African-American doctor who is married to a white doctor at his hospital..San Francisco General...

Last summer he was arrested and charged with killing a drug dealer in Hunter's Point...His DNA is on the premises...but no fingerprints and no gun...." said Larry North..

''So the case was made on DNA." I said..

"Yes...but there is a problem...His wife and a neighbor swear that he was miles away in their Tony San-Francisco condo at the time of the murder. He says he hasn't been in Hunter's Point in years and didn't know the Heroin dealer who was killed..

I swear, I had an investigator check his credit cards, debit cards, financials...everything...We talked to the Heroin Dealer's friends and associates....They never heard of this guy...Likewise..Coles friends say they can't imagine him down in Hunter's Point and they never imagined him even owning a gun...He wasn't a violent person...

Yet his DNA is at the scene and there was a grainy Street cam video of a man who resembles him leaving the scene just minutes after the murder... I wasn't his attorney in the first case...It was another attorney...Overworked...Drunk half the time and no match for  ADA Nevel Benson who got a first degree murder conviction...

The entire staff of his hospital put up the money for his defense ,including his wife...They presented some new evidence....They uh have made some sex videos that they uh post on uh Porn Hub from uh time to time.."said Larry North, smiling sheepishly....

''Well you won't have to worry about facing Nevel Benson...since he's now talking to the angels"said Nelson..

Larry was surprised and impressed..

"You heard?" he said..

"It was on CNN at the Airport...Local San Francisco Assistant District Attorney Nevel Benson jumped to his death off the Golden State Bridge..."said Nelson...

"It said he was going through a bitter divorce and was about to be indicted for making unwanted sexual advances against his wife's 20 year old niece and her 19 year old girlfriend at their pool during a pool party last summer.....He was very depressed." said Josie..

"I'll just bet he was.."said Beverly...

"Well At any rate..We've got our work cut out for us..." said Olivia...

"Thank you for this lovely breakfast spot Larry and last night's dinner....Do join us for dinner tonight.."said Olivia..

''Aww thanks Livy...How bout tomorrow night? And we can work on strategy..The Preliminary is two days from now...Give you a chance to do some digging eh Donnie Ray?" asked Larry..

''You make a good point.."I said..

He looked at Beverly and Nelson..

"I suppose you two would like to uh ahh get reacquainted...I mean he's been flying most of the morning and you haven't seen each other.." he said..

"Well uh yeah..Yes Larry.." said Beverly, smiling weakly...She didn't know what to make of Larry and how different, how nice he seemed...He hadn't said or done one thing to get on her nerves since we had been here..She was more than surprised..She was down right shocked..

Nelson whispered to Beverly after Larry went to the counter to pay his bill..

"Okay, Am I being Cat fished?  He called me last night, asked me what flight Josie and I were coming in on and said he'd pick us up at the airport...And he was there...Shook my hand...said he liked my new suit and everything.."said Nelson..

"I like your new suit too....Tailored huh? Nice...I feel like slipping my big girl panties off a little later.." Beverly whispered to Nelson..

One thing Larry North enjoyed was a nice bottle of Wine..The year before last when I was here..He and I went to a local winery and he bought me and Olivia a nice vintage wine..  He also sent us one as a Christmas gift a year before also....

Tonight he was in his favorite Wine and Spirits store looking at a vintage wine , when she walked in...

He didn't know who she was, but she was a vision of loveliness, he would later say... He was used to being the only African -American in this winery....He was amazed to see this fine African-American woman in here..It was almost as if she sucked all of the air out of the room he would later say...

He looked at her...He was impressed with her choice of wines...

He walked over to her and smiled..

"That is a very good year..." he said..

She smiled at him and he felt a warmness inside of him he hadn't felt in years...

He had forgotten that he had been told the Assistant District Attorney replacing Nevel Benson on the Joseph Coles case was Teel Porter..

"Why thank you...Most people don't know that...They think my name is weird...I suppose it is..but my mother loved that color and she named me Teel after her favorite color.."said Teel..

"It's a beautiful name and you are beautiful to match.." he said..

"Awwww Thank you..Flattery will get you everywhere...Hey...You smell great..What is that fragrance...?" she asked.

"It's nothing local...This comes from Germany...." he said.

"You went to Germany to get that cologne?" she asked.

"No, I ordered it on line..." he said and smiled..

"I like a man with good tastes in wine and fragrances.."she said..

"I like you!" he said..Again, he hadn't meant to say that...This woman was making him a bumbling idiot...No one had ever made him fumble his words so much...

"That's because you don't know me.." she said.. "But thank you in advance..I didn't get your name."she said.

"Larry, Larry North...I'm an Attorney." he said..

"Small World, So Am I..Where do you practice?" she asked.

"I'm with the Innocence Project...Before that..I was a Public Defender back in Philadelphia, where I'm from and I worked in Dallas/Ft Worth for the Innocence Project before coming here..I've been here about six years.." he said..

"Oh...I'm an Assistant District Attorney...Prior to that I was in Private practice..I know..It's usually the other way around..Long story..."she said and smiled..

They both made their purchases....Larry smiled..

''Well I'm certain you and your significant other will enjoy that bottle tonight...Chilled of course" he said..

''Was that your way of trying to see if I'm involved with someone? Nice...I can tell you're a lawyer...The answer is no..I'm not..I'm single...Divorced if you must know...I don't see a ring on your finger...How bout your relationship status Mr. North..?" asked Teel..

"I'm single..Never been married , Just got out of a three year relationship with my daughter's mother..She and my daughter live in Daly City with her fiance.."said Larry..

"Ouch!How old is your daughter?" asked Teel..

''She just turned one....Here is a photo of her." said Larry.

''Awwwww she's adorable.... " said Teel...

"Yes she is...She uh looks more like her mother...I suppose that's uh a good thing..The break up..Uh, it was my fault...I was a butt head.." Larry offered..

"Well it's nice to hear a man admit that.." said Teel, who laughed easily.....

"It's been six months now..I'm uh managing..." he said..

"You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to...I know that's a sore spot and you don't even know me.." said Teel, who felt like she'd known this stranger all her life...

"Say...Why don't you and I go someplace quiet and enjoy one of these bottles of wine?" he asked..

"Awwwww, I would, but tonight..I'm preparing for a trial, well, a hearing..So It's me, a bottle of Wine and Jill Scott ,no distractions...but if you have a phone...Let's exchange addresses and phone numbers.....Maybe you and I can get together for dinner, a movie or something at a less busy time..How bout that?" she asked.

"I'd like that very much Teel.." he said..

"I see that." she said, eyeing his trousers , which were standing out like a circus tent..It had been a long time since she had had this effect on a man..She actually found it a little flattering..

She smiled as they exchanged numbers and addresses on their phones..

"Nice meeting you Mr. Larry North.."she said...

"Even nicer meeting you Ms. Teel Porter.." he said..

She smiled and walked out of the winery and got in her car..A silver 2019 Lexus...

He was impressed..He felt light headed, Giddy almost...Like the Angels were smiling on him....He had never felt like this before..Never...Was this love? No,it couldn't be...He didn't even know this woman...but it was something...For sure..

Out on the San Francisco Streets, Larry felt in love with the city all over again...No more bad memories he thought...He was intrigued by the possibilities...He felt as light as a feather.

 Larry North did meet with us a day later...He was so happy and breezy it was unbelievable...

I was playing Maxwell on Siri....

Olivia, Beverly and Josie had prepared a small meal for us...

They had fried up some chicken....

prepared a wonderful garden salad and

and provided Ice tea for us to wash it all down...

"It's not much...but we thought it was a nice show of our appreciation for your hospitality.."said Beverly...

"This is wonderful and I am grateful..."said Larry North..

It was unbelievable how civil the two were....

"Okay, I'm being Cat fished.." whispered Nelson to Me..

''What do we know about our defendant?" asked Josie..A very good question.

"He was adopted....We don't know who his birth parents were...I don't know if that is even important yet..He attended Private Schools near Berkeley ...He graduated from U.C. L.A. and went to Stanford...He did his residency at a Hospital in Los Angelas...He moved back to San Francisco and met and married his wife, also a surgeon...."said Olivia..

"No police record what soever...Spotless employee record at the hospital." I said..

"No connection at all to anyone in Hunter's Point.."said Beverly...

Larry showed us the grainy street cam video of a figure leaving the apartment in Hunter's point where The Heroin Dealer was killed..

"This does look like him...but it could be a co-incidence.."said Josie..

"This isn't going to be easy..''said Larry..

''Well the Preliminary is tomorrow..We'll see what they have in discovery..."said Olivia..

'' Yeah..."said Larry...

Larry left for the night....We prepared for the next day....

"And this is my husband, Attorney Nelson East....We all worked as Public Defenders with Larry back in Philly."said Beverly..

"Pleased to meet you mam."said Josie..

"You've got a great team Olivia...I will be honored to try this case against you guys.." said Teel..

"You're The ADA?" asked Olivia..

"Teel?  You're Teel Porter?" asked Larry North..

"I told you that the other night when we met Mr. North..I had no idea I'd be trying a case against you." she said and smiled..

The way they looked at each other, we could tell that something was definitely going on......

I motioned to everyone to head into the courtroom...

 "If I didn't know better...I'd say that Larry is sweet on her...I've seen that look in his eyes before.."said Beverly, who was tickled pink and glad he was interested in someone other than her..Maybe this explained why he had been so nice and hospitable..

I watched the two if them as we walked inside the courtroom...Could this be true? And if so..Would it help us or hurt us?" I wondered..

''Larry..I should have figured this out when you said you worked for the Innocence Project...They brought me in on this case at the last minute after Nevel jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge...I didn't even ask about who the defense was going to be.." she said..

Larry took her hand...It was soft..

"Can we still see each other, some other time I mean?" he asked.

"Larry, we are opposing attorneys It wouldn't look right or be ethical......Oh don't look like that....Maybe after this trial...If you still like me by then..." she said and smiled.

"We'll see...I'm no walk in the park.." she said.. "Come on, let's get inside.." she said and smiled..
